Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain

Neck pain treatment in san francisco, CAWe have been providing treatment for neck pain in San Francisco for over 21 years now. In fact, neck pain is one of the most common conditions we treat. Our chiropractic clinic is located in the SF Financial District so most of our patients spend the majority of their day in front of a computer, mostly in a static position.

This puts tremendous pressure on the structures in the neck such as the cervical spinal joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. What happens is the head has a tendency to move forward towards the computer screen as we do our work. The neck muscles react and adapt and have to work much harder than they should. This forward head posture (FHP) also puts abnormal stresses on the neck bones predisposing them to Vertebral Subluxations, which is the term chiropractors use to describe what we treat.

Subluxations in the neck are a combination of misalignment of the cervical spine, abnormal or restricted cervical motion, cervical muscle spasms, pressure on the cervical nerve roots, and loss of function. There may or may not be neck pain.

Chiropractors can tell if you have subluxations in your neck by checking your posture, your cervical range of motion, your muscle strength of your upper extremities and grip strength, as they are controlled by the nerves in the neck, the reflexes and sensation in the upper extremities, and any tenderness or swelling around the cervical vertebrae.

Once a chiropractor determines you have vertebral subluxations, also referred to as “Pinched Nerves”, they will make a determination of how long the problem has been there so they can grade it. This can be done by taking an x-ray of the neck to check for spinal degeneration, loss of neck curve, thinning of the disc, and anterior weight bearing of the skull on the spine. X-rays are not always necessary but are a very useful tool if indicated.

Chiropractic means “done by hand”. So most chiropractors will use their hands to correct subluxations and all it’s components. This is usually done on a chiropractic table or bench and there are hundreds of variations of this. The object is to re-align the cervical spine, restore neck joint motion, reduce muscle spasm, swelling and inflammation, take the pressure off the spinal nerves, and restore lost function such as lost grip strength.

And yes, of course…if there is neck pain or neck, shoulder, and arm pain or headaches, your chiropractor will want to rid you of this as soon as possible. The good news is…as the cervical subluxation corrects the neck pain subsides.

How long will it take to fix my neck pain?

Well, this depends on how long the problem has been there, your age, your level of spinal degeneration, your adherance to the treatment recommendations, your stress level, your diet, your exercise frequency, your work schedule, etc. Chiropractors take all this into consideration and depending on the chiropractors technique make recommendations that make the most amount of sense for you.

Some chiropractic doctors such as us, incorporate exercises into the treatment process or massage or deep tissue laser…but the main course is always the chiropractic adjustment.

So there you go. Done by hand 100% natural chiropractic for neck pain. It just makes sense.

Hand Pain and the Role of the Neck

Hand pain doctors san francisco 94111We have been providing treatment for hand pain in San Francisco for over 20 years now. During this time we have learned much about the role of the neck when it comes to hand pain and carpal tunnel symptoms.

After-all, the nerves that innervate and control the shoulder, arm, wrist and hand, originate in the neck. The neck is the source of power, energy and life for the upper extremity.

If we were to cut-off the nerve supply from the neck to the hands, the hands would die. If there is diminished nerve supply the hands will malfunction and symptoms will manifest. In order for the hands to function at 100%, they need 100% nerve power. Some of the signs and symptoms of nerve pressure in the neck are as follows:

1. Neck Pain

2. Shoulder, Arm, and Elbow Pain

3. Wrist and Hand Pain

4. Numbness and Tingling in the Arms and Hands

5. Weakness of Grip

6. Night Pain

These are also the classic signs and symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Yes, the same symptoms result from nerve interference between the neck and had as true CTS, which is the result of pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. This is because the median nerve originates in the neck.

Interesting Huh? This is why it is SO important for a doctor to check you from the neck to the fingertips when you have hand pain or any of the other carpal tunnel SYMPTOMS.

There is a subset of chiropractors like us that specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of neck, arm and hand pain. Chiropractic upper extremity experts will incorporate tools such as deep tissue laser therapy, Graston Technique, ART, and upper extremity adjustments, in addition to cervical spine adjustments to remove nerve pressure from the neck to the hands.

Sometimes hand pain will resolve quickly…sometimes it takes a while. It just depends how long your condition has been there and the extent of the damage. One thing for sure…taking pain pills, anti-inflammatory medication such as cortisone injections, and wearing wrist splints, is not going to do much for you if the problem is nerve pressure in the neck from subluxations, bulging or herniated discs, disc degeneration, or muscle spasms.

Physical pressure on nerves (to the hand) requires the removal of the pressure on the nerves or the carpal tunnel symptoms will persist.

If you need help finding a carpal tunnel doctor in your area you can send me an email at ebendavis@yahoo.com and I will try to find a doctor I have trained in your area.

To schedule an appointment with one of our San Francisco Carpal Tunnel Doctors please call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

Chiropractic for Stress Related Neck Pain

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Neck pain doctor san francisco It has always been our philosophy to teach our chiropractic patients about the the things that cause what we treat. Chiropractors treat Vertebral Subluxations (VS), which are misalignment's of the spine that interfere with the transmission of nerve energy from the brain to the body and lead to dysfunction and dis-ease.

Physical, chemical, and mental stresses that the body is unable to adapt to are what cause Subluxations.

Physical stresses are things like poor ergonomics, bad posture habits, sports injuries, car accidents, a crummy mattress or pillow, a short leg, bad shoes, etc. It's easy to for most people to understand how physical stress can cause misalignment's in the spine.

Chemical stresses are toxins, drugs, tobacco, and pollution. Heck…the typical American Diet of processed foods is loaded with toxins. Chemical stresses can wreak havoc on the nervous system causing VS.

Mental stress, which is what most people think of when they think of stress, causes tense muscles…usually in the neck, and muscles attach to the bones of the spine, and can pull the bones out of alignment resulting in Subluxation.

All three types of stress cause what chiropractors treat (Vertebral Subluxations).

So as chiropractors…if we can teach our patients how to reduce stress with lifestyle recommendations regarding things like exercise, nutrition, ergonomics, sleeping, stretching, and relaxation..we can help prevent what  we treat.

Now this wont do much for Subluxations that have been around for a long time…and most have. These must have treatment. How much?…depends.

How much chiropractic you need depends on the nature of your problem, how long it has been there, your age, your level of spinal degeneration, complications, and over-all health.

When it comes to stress related neck pain…chiropractic will often deliver results when nothing else will. Because if the problem is VS…and most of the time it is…chiropractic is your best shot.

By reducing stress with education and lifestyle modification and increasing resistance with chiropractic adjustments and exercise…we can find that point of balance…which is different for everybody, that allows you to express optimum health.

So can chiropractic help me reduce stress and fix my neck pain?

Oh yeah…and a lot lot more!

Can Chiropractic Help Asthma?

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Asthma affects 22 million Americans. Asthma can occur at any age, but is most common in younger adults (under 40).

Nerves to Lungs
I am often asked if chiropractic can help asthma?

Asthma is abnormal constriction of the airways in the lungs. Why does this happen?

Well, there are lots of reasons, including the nerves that control the bronchial muscles (bands of muscles that surround airways) telling them to constrict. Why would they do that? Well, a nerve signal is electrical and chemical. A nerve impulse originates in the brain, travels down the spinal cord, then over nerve pathways to the target cells.

The nerves that control the lungs exit from in between bones in the upper thoracic spine (mid-back). If those bones are out of alignment…what chiropractors call a vertebral subluxation, it can put physical pressure on the spinal nerve and alter the nerve signal. Subluxations can either cause a nerve to fire too much or too little.

If these are the nerves going to your lungs, specifically the bronchial muscles, it can cause them to constrict, which will result in the symptoms of asthma.

Most of the time asthma is treated with medication (inhalers such as Albuterol) to cause the bronchial muscles to dilate. These inhalers can cause all sorts of other problems with long term use (and side effects from short term use).

So, if the cause of the asthma is vertebral subluxation, and the patient is taking medication for the problem, this asthma could go on forever, the patient gets addicted to the inhaler, and could potentially develop a whole new set of health problems.

So YES…chiropractic can help asthma…if the problem is physical (vertebral subluxation).

In fact, if the problem is subluxation, the only solution is to remove it…which is the purpose of chiropractic.

So there you go…that's the simple explanation…but often times their is just a lot more to it.

What if the source of the asthma is chemical…say from allergies, environmental factors such as asbestos, or work toxins, or smoking, or other medications, or hormonal, or hereditary, or from a diet rich in animal protein (especially dairy products) that is known to cause inflammation in the body?

Well…you don't need vertebral subluxations along with it…and chemical stresses, along with mental stress and physical stress are the primary causes of vertebral subluxation.

And, a well informed chiropractor can help you modify your diet (plant foods are best) and steer you in the right direction as far as lifestyle choices are concerned that may be pro-inflammatory.

My best resource for plant based nutrition is Dr. John McDougall, MD in Santa Rosa, CA.

Children with asthma symptoms respond really well to chiropractic adjustments. I think it's because the chances are higher the problem is physical. But children heal quicker in general.

Would you rather have your child receiving natural, painless chiropractic adjustments, or medications they may end up using for their entire life?

Hey…I'm not suggesting chiropractic is a cure-all for everything…because it's not. I do recommend that parents use both complementary medicine and conventional medicine. In the SF Bay Area this is easy…as there are many clinics that offer both or are open to working together.

Anyway, the nervous system controls every function in your body. The bones of the spine house and protect the nervous system. When the bones lose their normal protective positioning (vertebral subluxation) they can offend and irritate the same nerves they were designed to protect. This can result in all kinds of health problems…including asthma.

So, this is why regular chiropractic check-ups for you and your family make sense. It's just the smart thing to do!

Posture Is More Than Just The Way You Look

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Your Posture Is A Window To Your Spine. Your Posture Is A Reflection Of The Position Of Your Spinal Bones, Muscles, Ligaments, And Tendons On The Inside Of Your Body.

                          Posture San Francisco

Executive Express Chiropractic (formerly Front Street Chiropractic) has been the San Francisco Financial District's posture improvement headquarters for almost 18 years.

The nervous system controls every function in you body. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The bones of the skull and spine house and protect the brain and spinal cord. The alignment of the bones (vertebrae) also creates the openings (foramina) where the nerves (which are branches off the spinal cord) exit so they can travel to all the body parts with the information from the brain.

The brain and spinal cord are the only organs in the body to be completely encased by bone…that's how vital to life they are. In fact the brain and spinal cord are really the same organ. The spinal cord is simply an extension of the brian. When the brain exits through a hole in the back of your skull called the foramen magnum, which means "large hole" in latin, it becomes the spinal cord.

                              Subluxation

Then the nerves branch off the spinal cord like branches on a tree. Those nerves exit from in between the spinal bones (there are 24 of them: 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar) and split and subdivide until they reach everywhere. Every cell in your body is either directly or indirectly controlled by nerves. And when you consider there are some 6ooo billion cells in the body…that's a lot of nerves. In fact, if we were to melt away everything on your body but your nerves…we could still recognize you.

So what does this have to do with posture?

Well, when you have good posture…when your ears, shoulders, and hips are level from the front (see image above), and your skull is positioned properly as we look at you from the side (we should be able to draw an imaginary vertical line from your ear, through your shoulders, knee, and ankle: this is called the plumb line)…and your body weight is balanced evenly right to left, along with a normal pedal foundation (no flat feet or pronation), this creates an optimum environment for the nervous system to function (free of pressure and interference).

Plumb Line: posture doctor san francisco

When one of the 24 bones of the spine loses it's normal relationship with the bones above or below, it can cause the entire spine to shift out of alignment (vertebral subluxation) which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves resulting in pain and dysfunction.

This is the connection between good health and good posture. When you have good posture the nervous system functions better. Since the nervous system built your body…it's the first organ to form in utero, then it controls and regulates everything until you are born, while you are being born, then after you are born until you die, you can see why it makes sense to take care of it.

It just so happens that when your posture is good you look better too. So not only are you healthier on the inside…you reflect this health on the outside with your good posture.

Chiropractors are posture experts. We locate, identify, and correct vertebral subluxations. We know that Optimal Posture=Optimal Health. We seek to restore normal spinal position and posture so the body can function with less nerve interference.

So if you have been concerned about your posture…and you should be…get checked out by a chiropractor. And don't leave your kids at home while you go. Most spinal problems adults have are the result of spills and falls when they were a kid. Chiropractic is safe and gentle and should start early…just like dental hygiene starts early.

How Vertebral Subluxations Cause The Body To Lose It’s Beat

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

san francisco chiropractor The nervous system controls every function in the body. the nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The nervous system is the only organ in the body to be completely encased by bone (the skull and spine)..that's how vital to life it is.

In fact, the nervous system is the first organ to develop in vertebrates. The nervous system then builds the rest of the body and controls and regulates all of it's functions for the rest of your life.

Your health is directly proportional to the nervous systems ability to communicate with all the cells, tissues, glands, and organs of your body, and paradoxically…the same spine that protects your nervous system when it's in alignment…will offend and irritate it when it's out of alignment. Chiropractors call this condition a vertebral subluxation…and it's what we treat.

I like this explanation of how cells communicate with each other from one of my favorite health experts,  Dr. Dean Black. This excerpt is from his book Health at the Crossroads, pg. 47:

                                                            Losing the Beat

Cells get both chemical and electrical information from their surroundings, since the body communicates with both. Cells create electrical fields, for example. Two cells that sit within each other's fields create an electrical network. Changes in one cell's electrical field will effect what goes on in the other cell and vice versa. Since nerves also create electrical fields, a cell may also be influenced from farther away, by the brain or other parts of the nervous system. Electrical patterns may be precise and clear, or they may be distorted and disturbed (FROM SUBLUXATIONS), as anyone who listens to the radio can testify. As a cell's electrical context disorganizes, so do it's genetic processes (WHICH CAN LEAD TO SICKNESS AND DIS-EASE).

And the thing is…this can happen without any symptoms, just like other disease processes. This is why it makes sense to be checked at a very young age and throughout life for vertebral subluxations…whether you have symptoms or not.

I don't know about you…but I want to be clicking on all cylinders…and I want my family living subluxation free as well…which is why we all get adjusted frequently.

So anyway, sure chiropractors treat back pain, neck pain, TMJ, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, and on and on…but we also help keep your communication lines open so you can express life to it's fullest…and that's what it's all about.

What Causes Spinal Degeneration? Ask Your San Francisco Chiropractor

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Disc Degeneration San Francisco We have helped thousands of patients with spinal degeneration (osteoarthritis) and degenerative disc disease (DDD) since 1992 at our San Francisco Chiropractic Clinics.

Some of the first words out of a patients mouth right after they take a look at their spinal x-rays as compared to normal are… "How did that happen?"

I remember when I first saw my x-rays 27 years ago…I asked the same thing…it's a great question. There are as many answers to this question as there are experts…so here's mine:

I think spinal degeneration and spinal disc degeneration are the result of two primary causes.

1. The first being abnormal spinal alignment (vertebral subluxations) which typically starts when we are very young…even during the birth process. All the spills and falls we take learning to walk, ride a bike, sports, etc. When the spine is out of position the joints and discs wear abnormally…just like a tire when the front end of your car is out of alignment.

2. The second primary cause of spinal degeneration in my opinion is an unhealthy internal context from poor lifestyle choices. This also usually starts when we are very young as our parents dictate what we eat and drink…and everything else we do until we can make our own decisions. Then we have a tendency to continue on with what we were taught…which is usually not so great as evidenced by our health as a nation.

When you consider that almost 70% of the country is overweight and the childhood obesity rate is skyrocketing…it should be no surprise that spine disease is so prevalent….after-all, extra weight stresses the spinal joints and discs, forcing them to adapt to the extra load which leads to spinal degeneration.

Abnormal spinal alignment  can happen from poor posture at your workstation, bad mattresses or pillows, sports injuries, car accidents…and as I mentioned above…what about all the spills and falls you took as a kid?  Heck…just about everything we do as a part of modern day living is hard on the spine…which is why chiropractic care is such a great tool.

I have a 4 year old daughter and I am adjusting her all the time.

Kids respond great to chiropractic care…so do adults. I like to tell patients that while we can't do a whole lot about the spinal degeneration that has already happened…we can slow it down or freeze it and stop it from getting worse by correcting the "subluxations" and adopting a more healthy lifestyle.

And the thing is..the body thrives when you give it what it was designed to have…plant foods, exercise, rest, and proper spinal alignment.

This is why Chiropractic is the Worlds Largest Drug-less Healing Profession…because we help you give your body what it needs.

It's up to you to do the rest, and we can help steer you in the right direction at Executive Express Chiropractic. Our team of San Francisco Chiropractors have extensive backgrounds in sports, fitness, and wellness.

The best resource I know of for plant based nutrition is www.drmcdougall.com

And make sure to get plenty of aerobic exercise…the latest research suggest that your heart fitness or Cardiorespiratory Fitness(CRF) is the #1 factor in determining your overall mortality.

Back, Neck, Arm, and Hand Pain: Are They All Connected Somehow?

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Md0021571Question: I often times have low back pain and neck pain that travels into the arms and hands…all at once. Either they are OK…or I have all of these symptoms all at once. It can be really bad, and my medical doctor just gives me pain pills and tells me to take it easy. It happens maybe 1-2x per month. What causes this?

Answer: Actually, this is not that unusual. The back, neck, arms, and hands are all connected to each other by the nervous system. The nervous system consist of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The nerves branch off the spinal cord and exit from in between spinal vertebra and connect to all the parts of the body.

The nerves that exit from the neck bones, travel down the arm and into the hand. So any pressure on these nerves from a misaligned vertebrae (subluxation) can cause pain in the arm and hand…because nerve pain can travel down the nerve (radicular pain).

And, since all the bones of the spine are interconnected…it may be that you have a couple of real specific vertebral subluxations that move in and out of alignment depending on your activities and stress levels. I call these transitional subluxations…they can be quite unpredictable.

Anyway…that’s my two cents!

Chiropractic care is your best bet if you have this sort of symptom pattern. Sure, there are other causes of back, neck, arm & hand pain…but they typically present differently.

Vertebral subluxations respond best to chiropractic treatment and supportive spinal exercises…along with ergonomic instruction and home care (cervical pillow/ice/traction).

So…if you have been suffering with back and neck pain…along with arm and hand pain, that comes and goes in mysterious ways…give chiropractic a shot. Chances are, you will be glad you did.

For a complimentary consultation at our San Francisco Back and Wrist Pain Center…call 415-392-2225 or fill out our online information request form and someone will get back with you right way.

Chiropractic and Disc Herniations

San Francisco Chiropractor and Herniated Disc Doctor comments:

1574r0189741_3  It’s not uncommon for people to think that if they have a herniated disc in the neck, or a herniated disc in the low back, that they will need surgery. Actually, only a small percentage will. In fact, many people spend their entire lives with herniated spinal discs and never even knew they had them. I have helped hundreds of herniated disc patients over the years with traditional chiropractic care.

My experience has been, that most of the time, bulging or herniated discs respond favorably to chiropractic treatments. Chiropractic helps to restore normal spinal alignment which includes the position of the spinal discs. Since the inter-vertebral discs are what hold the vertebrae together, vertebral alignment and spinal motion are critical to the health of the discs. The discs of the spine act as a ligament (ligaments hold bones together) and a shock absorber, to give the spine spring-like properties when it is functioning properly. It functions properly when the bones are where they should be.

A healthy spine is able to house and protect the spinal cord, which is your life-line. The spinal cord carries all the information and energy from the brain and distributes it to all the body parts, controlling their function.

Chiropractic seeks to preserve the spine so that it is able to protect the nervous system and allow the body to function properly. When the spine loses it’s normal alignment, the spinal discs can shift and put unwanted pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. This is called a "vertebral subluxation". If the subluxation is left undetected and uncorrected, over time this can lead to a disc herniation or disc bulges. Bulging discs and herniated discs are similar to bulges in a tire, which occur when the tire tread wears abnormally. But, the spinal discs are living tissue, so they are able to heal (sometimes), unlike a tire.

Now, in the event chiropractic care does not work, say after a period of 4 weeks or so, we may refer out for medical care, or consider nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 or DRX9000c. I would say this occurs with about 15% of all cases. These herniated disc patients become chronic and severe. Some are surgical candidates. The surgeries are full blown fusion or less invasive micro-surgeries. Most of the patients I work with prefer not to have surgery. So, if chiropractic care is not successful, we try nonsurgical decompression with the DRX 9000. If the DRX does not help, then surgery may be an option. Or, just learning how to live with it the best you can (with the help of yoga, meditation, diet, exercise, and maybe some medications).

But, the good news is, between chiropractic care and spinal decompression we have a really good shot at fixing the problem. Or, at the very least, making the situation better than it is. heck, you can always have surgery. If you have surgery, you may rule out ever being able to try nonsurgical spinal decompression. It’s something to think about :)

If you would like to find out if you are a candidate for chiropractic care (at our SF Bay Area Chiropractic and Decompression Center) or nonsurgical spinal decompression, please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.
