Chiropractic Treatment For Posture Problems Related To Sitting

We have been providing posture related chiropractic treatment in San Francisco for over 23 years.

The majority of the patients we treat in downtown San Francisco spend most of their day sitting in front of a computer. This is after having already spent most of their lives sitting  at a desk in school. It’s just the way it is.

Now this is all well and good if something is being done to counteract the negative effects of sitting all day. Because we are living organisms, we adapt to our external environment. If the external environment is sitting in front of a computer, than our body’s will adapt to this.

Office workers over time tend to develop a forward head posture (FHP) and a rounded upper back. The shoulders also roll forward.

This is bad news because this posture puts more stress on the bones in the neck and upper back than they were designed to resist. This causes them to degenerate and become unstable. Because of this, the neck and upper back muscles have to work harder which can lead to all sorts of physical problems such as headaches, neck pain, upper back pain, shoulder and arm pain, and insomnia.

As time goes on the condition can become worse leading to chronic pain and disability.

In addition, there have been numerous studies over the past several years that show people that sit most of the day have a higher risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, and early death.

Great…so what can you do about it?

Well, the way we see it is that by design we need to be getting a lot of exercise…life is motion.  So the solution is simple…increase physical activity…a lot. Walk more, take stairs, take breaks and walk around. Heck…you can even get a life cycle or exercise bike at your desk or workstation.  Go on a walk when you get home, before work, whatever…just start moving around a lot more than you do.

As far as the poor posture goes…well, that’s where chiropractic comes into play. We are the posture experts. We can help correct your forward head posture (FHP) as well and any other parts of your spine or body that are out of normal alignment and position. We can help you adjust your workstation, sleeping positions, workouts, and exercise patterns so that you have a way to counteract the negative effects of sitting all day.

What you eat and drink plays a big role as well. Your chiropractor can help you here too.

Your chiropractor is your One Stop Posture Shop.

Yes, sitting is bad news and the news seems to get worse. But the solution is right there before you. The ball is in your court. You don’t need to be a statistic. Take action now…pick-up the phone and call your chiropractor!

Omega-3 fatty acids for Stress and Heart Health

Salmon is a great source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids
A new study finds that regular consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids (most commonly found in cold water fish like Salmon) improves cardiovascular health by dulling the connection between mentally stressful events and cardiovascular functions like heart rate, blood pressure, the fight-or-flight response, and blood flow. Those who frequently find themselves in stressful situations may benefit from adding Omega-3s to their diet. ~American Physiological Society, May 2013

Are You Tired All Day But Can’t Sleep At Night?

Chiropractor for insomnia san franciscoAre you tired during the day, but then
can’t fall asleep at night?  Do you lay
awake in bed, staring at the ceiling, wondering why you were falling asleep at
work?  Do you wake up more tired than
when you went to sleep? How about this one…

Do
You Look At The Clock And

Calculate
How Many Hours Of Sleep

You
Could Get If You Fell Asleep Right Now?

If you do, you are not alone.  According to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC)
, “Insufficient sleep
is a public epidemic.
An
estimated 50-70 million U.S.
adults have sleep or wakefulness disorder.

            The CDC recommends school-age
children (5-10 years) sleep 10-11 hours, teens (10-17 years) sleep 8.5-9.5 hours,
and adults sleep 7-9 hours per night.

            Of
course, everyone is individual.  Some
people need more sleep, and others need less sleep.

One thing is certain: If you are not
getting the proper amount of sleep you need, there are health risks.

            Barring
a health condition that may cause an inability to sleep, stress may be the
biggest cause of insomnia.

            Insomnia is
sleep disorder
that is characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep. People with
insomnia have one or more of the following symptoms:  Difficulty falling asleep, waking up often
during the night and having trouble going back to sleep, waking up too early in
the morning, and feeling tired upon waking.

            Some
of the consequences of insomnia are:
Sleepiness during the day, general tiredness, irritability, and problems
with concentration and or memory.

You May Suffer From “Adrenal Fatigue”

            According
to Dr. James Wilson, author of the book Adrenal Fatigue: 21st
Century Syndrome
, 80 percent of people will suffer adrenal fatigue at some
point in their lives.

            Adrenal
glands help your body handle and deal with stress.  The more stress you experience, the more your
adrenal glands have to work. There is a point when the adrenal glands become
over-worked. When this happens, it is VERY bad for you and your health.

            This
is a condition called, “Adrenal fatigue.”
The adrenal glands secrete cortisol, a powerful hormone that is
responsible for gluconeogenesis and activating anti-stress and
anti-inflammatory pathways. Cortisol prevents the release of substances in the
body that cause inflammation.

Small increases
of cortisol have some positive effects including a quick burst of energy for
survival reasons, heightened memory functions, a burst of increased immunity, lower
sensitivity to pain, and it also helps maintain homeostasis in the body.

            But,
it is important for the body to have a decreased or “no stress” period so its functions
can return to normal.

            When
constant stress is present, high cortisol levels remain in the blood
stream.

This causes all kinds of health problems
including: Impaired cognitive performance, suppressed thyroid function, blood
sugar imbalances such as hyperglycemia, decreased bone density, decrease in
muscle tissue, higher blood pressure,
lowered immunity and
inflammatory responses in the body, slowed wound healing, and increased
abdominal fat (which is associated with a greater amount of health problems
than fat deposited in other areas of the body).

Some of the health problems associated with
increased stomach fat include: heart attack, stroke, metabolic
syndrome
, increased “bad” cholesterol (LDL), and decreased “good”
cholesterol (HDL).

In other words, it is VERY bad.  But things can get worse…

If the overload of stress continues, the
adrenals become exhausted and actually become resistant to the stress.  This can result in hemorrhaged
adrenal glands, high insulin levels, atrophied thymus glands, biochemically
devastated bodies, a total collapse of body function, or a collapse of specific
organs or systems.

Obviously, this is
no laughing matter.

STRESS
KILLS

So what can you do?  Stress reduction is a
must, and since it is virtually impossible to eliminate all stress from your
life, you should take measures to minimize it and re-charge your body.

            There
are several great ways to reduce stress, such as  yoga.

Here are the results from a recent study, according to Science Daily: The participants were randomized into two groups. The meditation group
was taught the 12-minute yogic practice that included Kirtan Kriya, which was performed
every day at the same time for 8 weeks. The other group was asked to relax in a
quiet place with their eyes closed while listening to instrumental music on a
relaxation CD, also for 12 minutes daily for 8 weeks. Blood samples were taken
at the beginning of the study and again at the end of the 8 weeks.

“The goal of the study was to determine if meditation might alter the
activity of inflammatory and antiviral proteins that shape immune cell gene
expression,” said Lavretsky. “Our analysis showed a reduced activity of those
proteins linked directly to increased inflammation.”

In other words, this form of
yoga practiced 12 minutes a day, everyday for 8 weeks, seemed to reduce harmful
stress (a very good result).

            Now,
check this out… Recent research also shows that telling fewer lies can lead
to a healthier life.

In a study, researchers used
110 males and females, between 18 and 71 years old.   Fifty-five were told to stop lying completely
for 10 weeks and the other half were given no special instructions about lying.
They went to a laboratory each week to complete health and relationship
questionnaires and to take a polygraph test assessing the number of major and
minor lies they had told that week.

According to researchers,
the group who stopped lying complained less of headaches, sore throats,
tenseness, anxiety and other problems than those who were given no
instructions. Results also showed that the non-lying participants had improved
close personal relationships and smoother social interactions.

            The
research has not been published in a peer-reviewed journal, but was presented
at the American Psychological Association’s annual meeting.

            Researchers
also mentioned that lying can cause a great deal of internal stress.

And don’t forget, if you ever have any
questions or concerns about your health, talk to us. Contact us with your
questions. We’re here to help and don’t enjoy anything more than participating
in providing you natural pain relief.

Chiropractic as a Stress Management Tool

Corporate chiropractic san francisco Our San Francisco Chiropractic Clinic is located in the heart of the Financial District in what we call the Corporate Jungle. It is one of the most desirable places to work in the world, but at the same time it can be very competitive and stressful.

We like to think of Executive Express Chiropractic as a wellness "Pit Stop" for busy corporate executives and office workers…as well as urbanites on the go. We have little to no waiting, and we have a "no appointment needed" policy. That's right…you can just show-up and get the treatment you need…in a jiffy. WHY? Because appointments and waiting are stressful.

When we are under stress it causes muscle tension and misaligned vertebrae…especially in the neck, upper back, and between the shoulders. Stress can also trigger tension and migraine headaches. Chronic stress can weaken your immune system leading to ongoing colds, flues, and sickness.

Chiropractic adjustments and massage are like a magic wand for stress. In fact, I can't think of any treatment on earth that can counteract the damaging effects of stress as fast and efficiently as 100% natural chiropractic care…and a nice warm-up massage.

Now, if you have been grinding it out in the corporate jungle for many years and have let your health go, you will most likely require a sequence of chiropractic adjustments to get your spine aligned and your nervous system and muscles re-balanced. About half our patients require this. No problem…you still get our no-wait, no-appointment needed service (you can still make apts, they are just not required). This really makes it easy to work on chronic conditions on your lunch break or before and after work…or on Saturday.

The last thing you want to do is let stress build up in your body over extended periods of time without eventually taking action. They call stress the "silent killer" as it can lead to heart attacks and stroke if not managed properly.

Chiropractic is the perfect stress management tool. Your chiropractor can also help you with your diet, workout program, ergonomics, sleep positions, and relaxation methods such as meditation and visualization.

And it doesn't have to be a big time consuming extravaganza. Modern chiropractors understand the value of your time and how to optimize your visit for maximum benefit.

One thing for sure…our San Francisco Chiropractors get it. To find out for yourself call Executive Express Chiropractic at  415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Chiropractic for Stress Related Neck Pain

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Neck pain doctor san francisco It has always been our philosophy to teach our chiropractic patients about the the things that cause what we treat. Chiropractors treat Vertebral Subluxations (VS), which are misalignment's of the spine that interfere with the transmission of nerve energy from the brain to the body and lead to dysfunction and dis-ease.

Physical, chemical, and mental stresses that the body is unable to adapt to are what cause Subluxations.

Physical stresses are things like poor ergonomics, bad posture habits, sports injuries, car accidents, a crummy mattress or pillow, a short leg, bad shoes, etc. It's easy to for most people to understand how physical stress can cause misalignment's in the spine.

Chemical stresses are toxins, drugs, tobacco, and pollution. Heck…the typical American Diet of processed foods is loaded with toxins. Chemical stresses can wreak havoc on the nervous system causing VS.

Mental stress, which is what most people think of when they think of stress, causes tense muscles…usually in the neck, and muscles attach to the bones of the spine, and can pull the bones out of alignment resulting in Subluxation.

All three types of stress cause what chiropractors treat (Vertebral Subluxations).

So as chiropractors…if we can teach our patients how to reduce stress with lifestyle recommendations regarding things like exercise, nutrition, ergonomics, sleeping, stretching, and relaxation..we can help prevent what  we treat.

Now this wont do much for Subluxations that have been around for a long time…and most have. These must have treatment. How much?…depends.

How much chiropractic you need depends on the nature of your problem, how long it has been there, your age, your level of spinal degeneration, complications, and over-all health.

When it comes to stress related neck pain…chiropractic will often deliver results when nothing else will. Because if the problem is VS…and most of the time it is…chiropractic is your best shot.

By reducing stress with education and lifestyle modification and increasing resistance with chiropractic adjustments and exercise…we can find that point of balance…which is different for everybody, that allows you to express optimum health.

So can chiropractic help me reduce stress and fix my neck pain?

Oh yeah…and a lot lot more!

Neck Pain, Headaches and Stress

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Neck pain and headaches treatment SF When we are experiencing mental stress it causes our muscles to become tense…mostly in the upper back, neck, and across the shoulders. This can lead to neck pain and headaches. If the stress is ongoing, the headaches and neck pain can become chronic (pain that persists for over 90 days).

All of us handle stress differently. Some people thrive under stress and perform at their best. Others get sick and unable to function…and everything in between.

I have been practicing chiropractic in downtown San Francisco for almost 20 years now. My patients have been mostly office workers and executives that are working long hours trying to make a name for themselves or further their careers. For the most part…it's the life they choose.

They understand that the SF Financial District is the corporate jungle and in order to get ahead they have to work very long hours in a stressful go go environment.

What many don't realize when they start is how stressful this can be on your body…even if you are young. And if you have any weak links as far as health conditions that tend to flair-up when you are under stress…look-out, because here they come.

Neck pain and headaches are probably the 2 most common stress related symptoms we treat at Executive Express Chiropractic. Here are the 7 most common symptoms of stress:

1. Headaches

2. Fatigue

3. Neck, shoulder, back tension or pain

4. Sleeping problems

5. irritability or mood swings

6. Digestive Disturbances/hormone problems

7. Allergies or sinus problems

My Take: There are things you can do to increase your ability to manage and resist stress. Chiropractic adjustments help to keep the spine, musculoskeletal system, and nervous system in balance which can help with all 7 of the most common symptoms of stress.

A healthy (I prefer vegan) diet, plenty of exercise, rest, and lots of water can also increase your resistance to stress. As will a good cervical pillow and ergonomic chair at work.

Hey…once we become adults we own the keys to the Porsche (our body's). We are the ones that make all decisions about what we eat, when we exercise and how often, how much rest we get, if we see a chiropractor on a regular basis, etc.

From what I have noticed…the people than learn to strike that balance between really hard work and longs hours…and a healthy "chiropractic" lifestyle…seem to do the best…in health and in wealth.

Bust just know…the greatest wealth is health!

How Stress Causes Headaches!

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Treatment for headaches in SF Mental stress causes muscle tension in the neck, upper back, skull, and forehead. Just thinking about having to perform a difficult task or something unpleasant can trigger a headache in some people.

Many of the muscles in the neck attach to the cervical spine (neck bones). It's these muscles that allow you to turn your head and look up and down. The neck muscles also act like guide wires to help keep your skull (which is the weight of a bowling ball) in place.

When we are under stress and the muscles tighten-up it can actually pull the neck bones out of alignment…what chiropractors call a Vertebral Subluxationit's what we treat.

When this happens, nerves can become pinched causing even more symptoms than just the headache, such as neck pain, pain down the arm, pain between the shoulders, pain in the hands, and night pain.

If you are under ongoing mental stress, you can develop chronic headaches and neck pain, which can lead to other health problems such as insomnia, loss of concentration, and depressed immune response.

Many call Stress the Silent Killer because stress also produces "stress hormones" that are very destructive to your cardiovascular system and over-all health.

So sure, stress can cause headaches…stress is a primary cause of headaches. But stress can also put you at risk of heart attack and stroke.

So what's the best way to manage stress?

Well, a healthy "chiropractic" lifestyle is probably your best defense. The chiropractic lifestyle consists of regular chiropractic adjustments to help maintain a healthy nervous system and reduce muscle tension and stress. Regular exercise, plenty of rest, lots of water, and a clean healthy diet (I prefer a plant based diet) are also part of the chiropractic lifestyle. As is a positive attitude.

People handle stress differently, so you just need to figure out what works best for you…and your chiropractor can help you do it.

I would consider chiropractic your best choice for stress headaches treatment and prevention…it's one of the most common conditions we treat. Your chiropractor will help fix the symptoms of the headache and the cause…it just makes sense!

The Chiropractic Lifestyle, Stress and Peak Performance

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Ever notice how much better you perform at just about everything when you take good care of yourself?

It's common sense right?

Peak Performers Make it Happen When you are exercising regularly, making healthy food choices, taking care of your spine, getting plenty of rest, and managing stress, you perform better at just about everything.

Everyone responds to stress differently. Some people thrive on it and need it in order to drive them to perform at peak levels. Others can't deal with much stress at all…they get sick and are unable to perform…and everything in between.

But when it comes to a healthy lifestyle…the chiropractic lifestyle of regular spinal adjustments, exercise, good nutrition, and plenty of rest and water, you benefit no matter what your natural tolerance level for handling stress is.

Personally, I like controlled chaos. I like lots of stress…lots of action. But I prepare myself for it by staying healthy and mentally focused (and organized). The more balls in the air the better.

However…if my spine is out of alignment and there is physical stress on my nervous system, it effects my decision making and my ability to focus. Same if I don't get enough rest…or if I feel stiff and sore from lack of exercise. Or if I don't eat right. It's a balancing act.

And here's the deal…you can still work many hours during the week and take care of yourself (it does not require a lot of time)…In fact, you better take care of yourself if you are working long stressful hours. Taking care of yourself is more a mental game (than physical)…a game of decision making. You make it happen with the choices you make throughout the day.

I call the San Francisco Financial District where our San Francisco Chiropractor offices are located the "Corporate Jungle"…and it's survival of the fittest. Most of our patients are working at least 50-60 hours per week. Some of then thrive on this….some of them have trouble with it.

We like to think of Executive Express Chiropractic as a healthy, stress busting "Pit Stop" for busy San Francisco urbanites. Not only can we align your spine and remove physical stress from your nervous system…We also teach you specific spinal exercises you do at our clinic or at home (in minutes) to maintain a healthy spine.

In addition, we provide healthy advice on nutrition, posture, ergonomics, and healthy living, to keep you performing at peak levels.

Hey…there is a reason most peak performers visit a chiropractor on a regular basis. So why not perform at your peak with a healthy chiropractic lifestyle?

None of us are perfect…but we do all have amazing potential waiting to be unleashed under the right conditions. Chiropractic can help you create those conditions…that's what we do!

5 Tips To Relieve Holiday Stress Headaches

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Stress Headaches Treatment SF Stress Headaches are very common during the Holiday Season. It seems we often try to do more than we should to try to please everyone, which can cause muscle tension and stress headaches.

Here are a few simple things you can do to both prevent stress headaches from happening and to get rid of them if they do happen:

  1. Use a cervical pillow such as a Tempur-Pedic neck pillow which will help the neck muscles to rest and recover when you sleep. Soft pillows cause the muscles to work when you sleep which can contribute to stress headaches.
  2. Buy an ice gel pack from your local drug store and keep it in the freezer. When you feel like you are stressed out you can ice the neck muscles for 15 minutes to reduce the muscle spasms and prevent a headache from coming on. You can also ice after you get a headache. Make sure to use a paper towel between the ice pack and your skin  to prevent ice burn.
  3. Roll a hand towel into a roll and put it under your neck. Lie on it whenever you feel stress related muscle tension or a headache coming on. Do this for 5-10 minutes several times per day.
  4. Do these neck stretches at work or at home. Do not do them if they cause pain.
  5. Visit your chiropractor if you do all of the above and the headaches persist. You may have caused  a bone to lose it's proper position in the neck and a chiropractor can put it back in place for you.

So there you go…you don't have to let Holiday Stress related headaches ruin the party. Be proactive…especially if you are prone to headaches.

Happy Holidays!

Has Chronic Back Pain Taken Over Your Life?

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Back Pain Relief San Francisco We have been helping patients with severe chronic back pain for almost 20 years at Executive Express Chiropractic (formerly Front Street Chiropractic) in downtown San Francisco.

Chronic back pain is defined as back pain that has lasted for over 90 days.

The #1 predisposing factor to chronic back pain is a previous episode of back pain. When you consider that 85% of all Americans will have back pain at some point in their lives, it's a miracle everyone does not have chronic back pain.

Why does back pain become chronic and persist with one person and go away with someone else?

Well…that's a great question, for which there are many opinions. Since this is my blog, and I have 20 years experience treating thousands of patients with chronic back pain, I will give you mine.

I have noticed…and there are many exceptions…that in general, patients that live a healthier lifestyle, have a more normal body-weight, exercise frequently, eat right (especially a plant based diet), manage stress well, and have a stable family and work life…tend to recover quicker from back pain, and are less likely to develop chronic back pain.

Note: Smoking, drugs, or excessive drinking is a turbo-booster for chronic back pain.

And…there is often times more to back pain than just the physical part (bone out of place, too much body-weight, etc). There is frequently an often overlooked mental component to chronic back pain…which is why we recommend visualization techniques, meditation, and yoga for our spinal decompression and chronic back pain patients.

Anyway, I believe health is a spontaneous occurrence when the conditions are right. When we eat right, exercise, get plenty of rest, maintain our spinerefrain from excessive drinking and drug use, and have a positive mental attitude, our body makes happy cells. Happy thoughts become happy molecules.

Health Update: Recent research suggests that people that sit all day but workout, are still at risk for chronic back pain and other health problems. Sitting all day also inceases the risk of heart attack. It seems we need to move around way more than we think. An hour a day at the gym 3x per week on the weights is not enough (great huh?).

So what can you do if you have chronic back pain that has taken over your life?

Well, at Executive Express Chiropractic we will first determine if there is a physical component to your back pain. Physical meaning a bone out of alignment putting pressure on a nerve. Is there a short leg? Is the pelvis rotated? Is there a herniated or bulging disc? Spinal degeneration? Do you have poor posture?

As part of our initial intake we will cover lifestyle "Red Flags" such as smoking, obesity, excessive alcohol or drug use, etc.

Physical, chemical, and mental stresses cause what chiropractors treat…Vertebral Subluxations.

Our San Francisco chiropractors will work to correct the subluxations with chiropractic and spinal decompression (if indicated) and teach you about what causes them with education about lifestyle choices.

If we can help you to adjust the factors that are responsible for creating the conditions of health, we can work together to break the chronic back pain cycle…which can be difficult at times.

Chiropractic adjustments, Nonsurgical spinal decompression, Active Release Technique (ART), Deep Tissue Laser Therapy, Graston Method, Exercise, TLC, and Lifestyle Modification…That's our magic formula for chronic back pain.

Will it work for you?

We sure hope so…it's better then the alternative. Who knows…you might just get your life back.

Check out the Executive Express Chiropractic YouTube Channel to listen to what some of our patients have to say.
