Scoliosis Treatment San Francisco

scoliosis treatment SFChiro-Medical Group, Inc. (CMG) has been providing treatment for scoliosis in San Francisco for over 23 years.

One of the most non-invasive and effective scoliosis correction tools is the SpineCore Dynamic Corrective Brace. Here is an excerpt from the CMG website explaining how it works:

SpineCore Dynamic Corrective Brace

There is now a major non-surgical breakthrough in the treatment of scoliosis. This breakthrough is called The SpineCor System, which has the highest success rate for helping patients diagnosed with scoliosis. In fact it stabilizes 87% of scoliosis cases, while not restricting movement, offering far more comfort and being virtually invisible under clothing. The SpineCor System is a soft brace that does not need to be worn 24 hours a day. Dr. Scott Calzaretta (DC) who has been practicing locally for over 23 years in the San Francisco Bay Area is certified to Administer the SpineCor Dynamic Corrective Brace.

Do you have questions about the Spincor Brace and how it can help you or someone you love? Call our knowledgeable staff today to find out information about this remarkable brace. Call us at (415) 495-2225, or use our Contact form to send us a message.

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is the outcome of a progressive 3D deformation of the spine.

Scoliosis affects between 2 and 3% of the population.
Among the most severe scoliosis cases, 8 out of 10 are young females.
Scoliosis begins in childhood or adolescence. It occurs at different ages and is categorized accordingly as an infantile, juvenile or adolescent scoliosis. It can be detected at all ages but as it is very much related to growth, it is most common in adolescence.
In more than 80% of the cases, the real cause of scoliosis remains unknown; this is why it’s called idiopathic. There are many hypotheses being studied by researchers. Heredity and growth control mechanisms are the main focus for modern research. While there is no scientific consensus on the precise cause and progression factors of idiopathic scoliosis, enough is known to improve non-surgical treatments.

If untreated, most severe scoliotic deformations have mid and long-term consequences on:

Vital functions: respiratory and cardiac pathology
Locomotion: pain and mobility limitation
Aesthetic: hunchbacked aspect and short trunk

What kinds of treatments are available?

Why use The SpineCor system? There is a small window when scoliosis suffers are at the greatest risk. Typically this occurs when children go through puberty. Treating the problem at this vital time can help by stopping or slowing the progress of Scoliosis. The soft brace has been proven to re-educate the muscles. It can reduce, stabilize and often completely reverse a child’s scoliosis.

How is the brace fitted? A specific corrective movement is performed, and the brace is applied according to the SpineCor Assistant Software instructions. The moderate tension in the elastic bands allows the repetition and amplification of the corrective movement as the child undertakes everyday activities. This results in a progressive curve reduction. The brace is worn 20 hours out of 24. The four hours out of the brace must not be taken at once, usually the patient divides them into two breaks: morning and evening. Sports are to be encouraged and done while wearing the brace. To obtain a neuro-muscular integration of the new strategy of movement, the minimum duration of the treatment is 18 months.

Why the brace is unique. The brace was developed by two pediatric surgeons from Sainte-Justin’s hospital in Montreal. It is the first and only truly dynamic brace, which provides a progressive correction of Idiopathic Scoliosis from 15 degree Cobb angles and above. Traditional rigid braces are non-dynamic and promote muscle atrophy. It is the only brace that preserves normal body movement and growth and allows normal activities of daily living. In fact, patients with the SpineCor brace are encouraged to be physically active while wearing the brace.

Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain

Neck pain treatment in san francisco, CAWe have been providing treatment for neck pain in San Francisco for over 21 years now. In fact, neck pain is one of the most common conditions we treat. Our chiropractic clinic is located in the SF Financial District so most of our patients spend the majority of their day in front of a computer, mostly in a static position.

This puts tremendous pressure on the structures in the neck such as the cervical spinal joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. What happens is the head has a tendency to move forward towards the computer screen as we do our work. The neck muscles react and adapt and have to work much harder than they should. This forward head posture (FHP) also puts abnormal stresses on the neck bones predisposing them to Vertebral Subluxations, which is the term chiropractors use to describe what we treat.

Subluxations in the neck are a combination of misalignment of the cervical spine, abnormal or restricted cervical motion, cervical muscle spasms, pressure on the cervical nerve roots, and loss of function. There may or may not be neck pain.

Chiropractors can tell if you have subluxations in your neck by checking your posture, your cervical range of motion, your muscle strength of your upper extremities and grip strength, as they are controlled by the nerves in the neck, the reflexes and sensation in the upper extremities, and any tenderness or swelling around the cervical vertebrae.

Once a chiropractor determines you have vertebral subluxations, also referred to as “Pinched Nerves”, they will make a determination of how long the problem has been there so they can grade it. This can be done by taking an x-ray of the neck to check for spinal degeneration, loss of neck curve, thinning of the disc, and anterior weight bearing of the skull on the spine. X-rays are not always necessary but are a very useful tool if indicated.

Chiropractic means “done by hand”. So most chiropractors will use their hands to correct subluxations and all it’s components. This is usually done on a chiropractic table or bench and there are hundreds of variations of this. The object is to re-align the cervical spine, restore neck joint motion, reduce muscle spasm, swelling and inflammation, take the pressure off the spinal nerves, and restore lost function such as lost grip strength.

And yes, of course…if there is neck pain or neck, shoulder, and arm pain or headaches, your chiropractor will want to rid you of this as soon as possible. The good news is…as the cervical subluxation corrects the neck pain subsides.

How long will it take to fix my neck pain?

Well, this depends on how long the problem has been there, your age, your level of spinal degeneration, your adherance to the treatment recommendations, your stress level, your diet, your exercise frequency, your work schedule, etc. Chiropractors take all this into consideration and depending on the chiropractors technique make recommendations that make the most amount of sense for you.

Some chiropractic doctors such as us, incorporate exercises into the treatment process or massage or deep tissue laser…but the main course is always the chiropractic adjustment.

So there you go. Done by hand 100% natural chiropractic for neck pain. It just makes sense.

The Nervous System and Your Health

Nervous-system-san-francisco
The nervous system controls and regulates every function in your body. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The spinal cord is actually an extension of the brain.

The nerves branch off the spinal cord and exit from in between the bones of your spine and further subdivide until they connect with every cell in your body. Now when you consider you have some 6000 billion cells in the body…that's a lot of nerves.

Interesting Fact: It is said that there are enough nerves in the human body that if all the other cells were somehow removed the network of fine nerves would be numerous enough to enable you to easily recognize the individual concerned and to recognize every tissue layer in his or her body.

The brian and spinal cord are so vital to life that they are completely encased by bone…your spine. The spine is made up of 24 movable segments called vertebrae. There are 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, and 5 lumbar vertebrae. In between each vertebrae are cartilage pads called inter-vertebral discs. Discs hold the bones together and give the spine flexibility.

When your spine is in it's proper alignment it forms 3 nice curves (see below).

Normal curves of the spine

These curves form as part of normal growth and development when we are very young. When we are infants and begin to crawl and lift our little heads up against gravity we form our neck curve (lordosis). Then, when we start to stand up and eventually walk, we form the lumbar curve (lordosis). We are born in a kyphosis.

For the spine to be in this position, the vertebrae must be in their natural alignment. When the vertebrae are in alignment they create nice openings for the spinal nerves to exit so they can carry the information from the brain to the body.

When the bones lose their normal position…which can happen early in life from spills and falls, the same bones that protect the nerves can offend and irritate them causing malfunction, sickness, and dis-ease. Chiropractors call this Vertebral Subluxation, and it's what we treat.

The nerves are very delicate, and they are unable to transmit normal signals from the brain when they are under pressure from subluxation. Chiropractors remove the pressure by correcting the subluxation allowing the brain to once again communicate with the target cells.

How often should you get checked for subluxations?

Well…first of all it should start young…very young…and should continue throughout life.

It just depends how active you are, your over-all health, level of spinal degeneration, fitness level, stress levels, etc. Everyone is different.

At our San Francisco Chiropractic Clinic we see some patients every week. We see some only a few times a year. And sometimes we never see someone unless they can't move (not recommended).

Hey…nothing is more important than a healthy spine and nervous system…because without it, you are unable to express life to it's fullest.

Chiropractic is affordable, it's quick, it's safe, and it's effective. Consumer Reports ranks chiropractic #1 for back pain. Make chiropractic a part of your life. It's a wise invesment and will pay dividends for a lifetime.

Whiplash Symptoms and Treatment

San Francisco Whiplash Doctor Comments:

Whiplash doctor san francisco We have been treating whiplash injuries in downtown San Francisco for almost 20 years now. We use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, massage, exercises, deep tissue laser therapy, and TLC to achieve favorable outcomes in just about every whiplash injury we treat.

Here is what the Mayo Clinic has to say about Whiplash:

Whiplash is a neck injury that can occur during rear-end automobile collisions, when your head suddenly moves backward and then forward — similar to the motion of someone cracking a whip. These extreme motions push your neck muscles and ligaments beyond their normal range of motion.

Whiplash injuries can be mild or severe. Treatment typically begins with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice applied to the painful neck muscles. If pain persists, prescription medications and physical therapy may be helpful.

Most people recover from whiplash in just a few weeks, but some people with whiplash injuries develop chronic conditions that can be extremely painful and disabling.

My Take: Sure, many people that suffer a whiplash injury to the neck or low back feel better after a short period of time…but have they really recovered from the injury?

I have learned from personal experience (I had 3 whiplash injuries while in chiropractic college) and from 20 years of treating neck and back pain from whiplash trauma…that it's best not to leave musculoskeletal symptoms related to a car accident or other whiplash cause untreated.

What happens is the bones of the spine get knocked out of place and stay there…even though you feel better. In addition…the muscles, ligaments, and tendons that were injured from the whiplash, do not heal properly. They end up being weaker, less flexible, more pain sensitive, and prone to re-injury.

In order for the bones of the spine (and spinal discs) and the surrounding soft tissues to heal properly the right conditions need to be in place such as proper position and motion. Allowing the injured parts to heal on their own sets the stage for chronic neck or back pain down the road.

More often than not, patients that present to our San Francisco chiropractic center with chronic neck pain and headaches, have a history of whiplash injury from an auto accident.

It's sure a lot easier to treat a whiplash right after it happens than to treat a chronic back, neck pain, or shoulder pain syndrome years later.

Here's the deal…If you or someone you know has been involved in a car accident…recently or in the past…you should get checked out by a chiropractor. Don't wait until the neck or back pain becomes chronic and hard to treat…do it NOW!

Back Pain, Obesity, and Chiropractic

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Back pain relief SF Almost 70% of Americans are either overweight or obese, and millions suffer with chronic back pain…is there a connection? I think so.

After-all…the spinal bones, spinal discs, ligaments, muscles, and tendons, are designed to function best with a more normal body weight. When we over-load the spine and it's supporting structures over an extended period of time it will cause them to breakdown and malfunction.

Here are some of the musculoskeletal disorders that are associated with obesity:

  • Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)
  • Herniated Discs
  • Bulging Discs
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Sciatica
  • Chronic Back Pain
  • Facet Syndrome
  • Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD)

Is it possible that if an obese back pain patient were to lose weight the back pain would go away?

It's not only possible, but the reverse is also often true.

Many times, if an obese patient does not lose weight the back pain will persist…even if the patient is undergoing chiropractic care, or acupuncture, or physical therapy.

In fact, many obese patients are so de-conditioned because they have been unable to exercise (or unwilling to) that back pain treatments cause even more pain. Managing this is an art.

So how does an obese patient fix their back pain?

In my 20 years as a chiropractor in San Francisco I have helped hundreds of obese patients with back pain. I have always found that it is best to do a combination of chiropractic care, aerobic and strentgh training, and plant based nutrition therapy or some other form of nutrition based weight loss (not a quick fix program).

If we can do all these lifestyle modifications together…slowly at first…we can make long term permanent changes in a patients body weight and back pain.

And here's the deal…usually the back pain is the least of an obese patient's health care concerns. Obesity is a primary cause of most killer diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes.

Often times we work closely with medical doctors, nutrition counselors, and physical therapists…and sometimes a chiropractor manages everything. I have done both.

So anyway…YES, there is a direct connection between back pain and obesity…and a chiropractor skilled in lifestyle modifcation programs can help get an obese patient back on track. A chiropractor is a great first step.

Can chiropractic help a degenerated disc?

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

We have been helping patients with degenerated discs in the SF Financial District for almost 20 years now.

The spinal disc has two primary functions:

1. The spinal disc is a ligament. Ligaments hold bones together. A spinal disc holds the spinal bones above it and below it together.

2. The spinal discs also act as shock absorbers, for they absorb the weight of the body and allow for twisting and bending.

Here is an excerpt from a really cool page (and image) on Spinal Disc Anatomy from Chirogeek.com that does a great job of explaining what a lumbar spinal disc is, what it's made of, and how it functions:

Lumbar Spinal Disc Anatomy

The lumbar spine of the human is made up of five lumbar
vertebrae that are separated by five intervertebral discs (blue structures in
fig. #1). The discs may be thought of as spinal shock absorbers, for they
absorb the load of the body. They also allow for movement at the waist as they
act as a pivot point and allow the lumbar spine to bend, rotate, and twist.

There are 23 discs in the human spine: 6 in the neck (cervical
region), 12 in the middle back (thoracic region), and 5 in the lower back
(lumbar region). This page shall focus on the lumbar spine; however, the
thoracic and cervical spines are similar in make-up.

The disc is made up of three basic structures: the nucleus pulposus, the annulus fibrosus
(aka annulus fibrosus)
and the vertebral end-plates.
Although their percent composition differs, the latter three structures are
made of three basic components: proteoglycan (protein), collagen (cartilage),
and water. We will learn all about these structures below.

In order for a spinal disc to function as intended, the spine needs to be in it's proper alignment. If a bone is out of alignment (normal spinal motion is also disturbed) it will put abnormal stresses on the disc and they will wear unevenly and degenerate. This is very similar to the way the tires on your car will wear abnormally when your front end is out of alignment. Over time this can lead to disc degeneration, disc bulges, and disc herniations.

Since chiropractors are primarily concerned with restoring proper spinal alignment and motion, it only makes sense that chiropractic adjustments can help prevent, slow down, and occasionally reverse spinal degeneration.

Some of the things that cause the spine to lose it's normal alignment (vertebral subluxations) are spills and falls, auto accidents, sports injuries, poor posture, stress, bad mattress, obesity, soft pillows, sitting all day, lack of exercise, poor food choices,  and on and on…Life.

In reality we are designed to be running around the jungle all day hunting for food. We need lots of exercise and motion…and we are primarily plant eaters.

Compare this to the average American who sits in a cubicle all day under artificial light, eating artificial food.

So YES…chiropractic can help spinal degeneration…and so can fine tuning many of the other lifestyle choices you make. What happens to a race car when you put cheap gas and motor oil into it? It runs like crap. Well…that's what happens to us when we eat poorly and sit around all day.

The chiropractic lifestyle of regular adjustments, daily exercise, a good pillow and mattress, proper ergonomics, a sound diet, and lots of water, will go a long way to help you adapt to the stresses of modern day living at optimum levels.

So find yourself a good chiropractor and take care of your body so it can take care of you :-)

Chiropractic: A Healthy Spine Makes Everything Work Better

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Mdl0591 Since the nervous system controls every function in your body…and the bones of the skull and spine house and protect the nervous system…it sure makes sense to make an effort to keep your spine healthy.

After-all…nothing is more important than your health…right?

Well, if the answer is not YES, you are probably reading the wrong material…because the sole purpose of this blog is to provide information to my readers that they can use to help adapt to the stresses of modern day living at optimum levels.

And we deal with specific topics such as back pain, neck pain, herniated discs, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, exercise and plant based nutrition.

The spine is the center of it all. Because unless the spine is healthy, the nervous system will not be able to carry out all of it’s normal activities…which can lead to sickness and dis-ease.

The best way to keep a healthy spine is regular chiropractic adjustments, a healthy diet, plenty of exercise, and good posture habits…including ergonomics. Your chiropractor can help you with all of this.

If you take care of your spine…it will take care of you. So visit a chiropractor…because if you do… chances are, you will be glad you did.
