Hand Pain For No Reason?

Hand Pain Treatment in SF

Hand Pain Treatment in San Francisco

We have been treating hand pain in San Francisco for over 22 years.

Every week, many people come to our clinic with hand pain that has no apparent cause. Some say they woke up with it…others say it just came on while they were performing normal work or household duties. For some, the hand pain comes and goes and may be getting progressively worse.

The obvious place to look is the hands themselves. Are they being overworked? This day and age most of us spend a good amount of time sitting at a desk in front of a computer doing repetitive motions with the arms and hands. This alone without adequate breaks or proper ergonomics and posture can lead to hand pain, numbness, tingling, burning and weakness.

There is a not so obvious place to look as well that could well be the primary contributor to your arm or hand pain. The neck or cervical spine. This is where all the nerves that innervate or control the arm and hands (upper extremities) originate  and they are very vulnerable to pressure or interference as they exit the spine.

Some of the conditions in the neck that can pinch the nerves and cause hand pain and related disorders are as follows:

  • Herniated or bulging discs in the neck
  • Facet Syndrome
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Vertebral Subluxation
  • Bone spurs
  • Spinal Stenosis

Here are some of the potential symptoms from these conditions:

  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Arm pain
  • Elbow Pain
  • Hand Pain
  • Numbness and Tingling
  • Weakness of Grip
  • Night Pain

These are also the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). In fact, many patients are misdiagnosed with CTS when the problem is actually in the neck. It’s easy to do since the symptoms are the same. This is why it’s so important to See a doctor who spends the majority of their day managing cases of hand pain and related disorders and knows how to treat them naturally. There are many chiropractors that specialize in this like we do.

The last thing you ant is unnecessary drugs or surgeries.

Patients come to our San Francisco Chiropractic and medical center because they know we are hand pain and carpal tunnel experts. We have medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, trainers, massage therapists, and nurses, that routinely treat hand pain, naturally.

We have two clinics in downtown San Francisco to serve you.

So…if you are suffering with hand pain, numbness, tingling, burning, aching, neck or shoulder pain or night pain, you may want to give us a call.

To schedule an appointment with a hand pain doctor on San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.

Neck Pain From Sleeping?

tempurpedic neck pillow

Are You Using a Cervical Pillow?

We have been providing neck pain treatment in San Francisco since 1992.

One of the more common complaints in a chiropractic office is a patient complaining of neck pain from sleeping. More often than not the symptoms are ongoing but this episode is worse than normal. Some patients experience neck and shoulder pain and others headaches as well.

What causes this and what can be done about it?

Well…believe it or not the fix for morning neck pain may be easier than you think.  The first questions your chiropractor will probably ask you (and we ask all of our new patients these two questions) are this:

1. Do you use a cervical pillow when you sleep?

2. Do you sleep on your stomach?

When you sleep on your stomach you need to have your head turned so you can breath…this means you are sleeping with the spine twisted. The spine is also flat when you sleep on your stomach. Twisted and flat is the the worst possible thing for your neck. And even worse…most stomach sleepers have been doing this their entire life.

A cervical pillow is designed and built to support the spine in it’s normal alignment when you are on your back or on your side. These are the only positions you should sleep in. The pillow we prefer is the Tempur-Pedic Neck Pillow, but there are many other excellent pillows out there.

In addition, You may also need a some chiropractic adjustments as well as some home exercises to help restore the curve in your neck that you have most likely lost from years of sleeping on your stomach. Your new pillow will help to restore your neck curve. You should start feeling better right away because chances are the problem has been eliminated, though there can be a break in period for some with the pillow. Stick with it.

Your chiropractor will also show you proper ergonomics techniques as well as stretches you can do at your desk at work to counteract the stresses of sitting for long periods. Poor ergonomics can be a contributing factor to neck pain and headaches.

So there you go. If you have neck pain from sleeping your first stop should be the chiropractor. And if you don’t have a cervical pillow please get one. The best thing to do is to go to a store that has a variety or to a chiropractor that sells them. You will need to be fitted to make sure you get the right size and foam density.

To schedule an appointment with one of our San Francisco Chiropractors please call 415-392-2225. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Chiropractic For Shoulder Pain

shoulder pain treatment in SF

Shoulder Pain Treatment with Chiropractic

We have been providing treatment for shoulder pain in San Francisco since 1992.

Shoulder pain is fairly common these days, especially with office workers who spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer doing repetitive motions with the upper extremities.  often times there is associated neck, arm and hand pain.

There are 3 primary causes of shoulder pain:

1. Acute shoulder pain from trauma or injury such as a sports injury or auto accident.

2. Cumulative Trauma Disorder from doing repetitive shoulder and upper extremity movements over time.

3. Chronic shoulder pain, which is pain that persists for over 3 months. It is usually the result of 1 or 2 above,

Unfortunately, a visit to the chiropractor is not high on the list of someone that is experiencing a bout of shoulder pain. Typically, they do nothing or visit a medical doctor. Some sharp medical doctors will refer out for physical therapy or even chiropractic. Many will still prescribe painkillers and muscle relaxers (bad news). Drugs typically only mask the symptoms and do not address the cause.

Over the past 23 years we have treated thousands of cases of shoulder pain at our chiropractic clinic in San Francisco. The treatment methods (depending on the actual problem) we use are as follows:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to the neck, arms and shoulders
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Active Release Techniques (ART)
  • Deep Tissue Laser Therapy
  • Kinesio Tape
  • Graston
  • Electronic Muscle Stimulation
  • Ice and Heat

Depending on whether the case is acute or chronic or cumulative will dictate the actual treatment plan and duration of care. We will usually be able to make our recommendations on the first or second day.

So, if you live or work in the SF Bay Area and have suffered a shoulder injury, we would like to meet with you. We are conveniently located at the Embarcadero Center One in the Financial District and have validated parking.

To schedule an appointment for shoulder pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and mention this blog post.

chiropractor posture san francisco

Chiropractic Treatment For Posture Problems Related To Sitting

We have been providing posture related chiropractic treatment in San Francisco for over 23 years.

The majority of the patients we treat in downtown San Francisco spend most of their day sitting in front of a computer. This is after having already spent most of their lives sitting  at a desk in school. It’s just the way it is.

Now this is all well and good if something is being done to counteract the negative effects of sitting all day. Because we are living organisms, we adapt to our external environment. If the external environment is sitting in front of a computer, than our body’s will adapt to this.

Office workers over time tend to develop a forward head posture (FHP) and a rounded upper back. The shoulders also roll forward.

This is bad news because this posture puts more stress on the bones in the neck and upper back than they were designed to resist. This causes them to degenerate and become unstable. Because of this, the neck and upper back muscles have to work harder which can lead to all sorts of physical problems such as headaches, neck pain, upper back pain, shoulder and arm pain, and insomnia.

As time goes on the condition can become worse leading to chronic pain and disability.

In addition, there have been numerous studies over the past several years that show people that sit most of the day have a higher risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, and early death.

Great…so what can you do about it?

Well, the way we see it is that by design we need to be getting a lot of exercise…life is motion.  So the solution is simple…increase physical activity…a lot. Walk more, take stairs, take breaks and walk around. Heck…you can even get a life cycle or exercise bike at your desk or workstation.  Go on a walk when you get home, before work, whatever…just start moving around a lot more than you do.

As far as the poor posture goes…well, that’s where chiropractic comes into play. We are the posture experts. We can help correct your forward head posture (FHP) as well and any other parts of your spine or body that are out of normal alignment and position. We can help you adjust your workstation, sleeping positions, workouts, and exercise patterns so that you have a way to counteract the negative effects of sitting all day.

What you eat and drink plays a big role as well. Your chiropractor can help you here too.

Your chiropractor is your One Stop Posture Shop.

Yes, sitting is bad news and the news seems to get worse. But the solution is right there before you. The ball is in your court. You don’t need to be a statistic. Take action now…pick-up the phone and call your chiropractor!

To schedule an appointment with one of our San Francisco Chiropractors please call 415-392-2225.

Cervical Decompression for Arm and Hand Pain

cervical decompression san francisco drx9000c

Cervical Decompression with the DRX9000c

We have been providing cervical spinal decompression treatment in San Francisco for over 10 years now. The machine we use is the DRX9000c.

The DRX9000c cervical decompression system treats bulging and herniated discs in the neck which are a primary cause of arm and hand pain.

The nerves that exit from the neck travel down the arm and into the hand. When these nerves become pinched from herniated or bulging cervical discs it can cause neck pain, shoulder pain, arm and hand pain, weakness of grip, numbness, tingling, even night pain.

Because these symptoms mimic those of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), herniated discs in the neck are often misdiagnosed as CTS. In fact, sometimes carpal tunnel surgery is even performed (even though the cause is in the neck)…if you can believe that.

Once it is determined that the underlying cause of a patients arm and hand pain is a herniated or bulging disc (by MRI) we will first attempt to help with conservative treatments such as chiropractic, massage, and physical therapy. In the event these treatments fail to deliver results we may recommend cervical decompression with the DRX9000c.

The DRX9000c is designed and built to treat herniated discs in the neck without surgery. Sometimes a combination of decompression, chiropractic and exercise works best. If we need the help of a medical doctor we have them as part of our team also.

To find out if you are a candidate for arm and hand pain treatment with cervical decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. We are in network for most insurance carriers. We also have validated parking at the Embarcadero Center where we are located.

Neck and Shoulder Pain Treatment in San Francisco

neck and shoulder pain teatment in SF

We have been providing neck and shoulder pain relief in downtown San Francisco for over 22 years now.

Neck and shoulder pain is very common amongst those who spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer. There is a natural tendency for the head to move towards the computer screen which causes the neck muscles to work harder then they should to hold your head upright.

Then there are the repetitious movements of the upper extremities doing the various tasks associated with working at a desk. It’s these repetitive movements over time that are a primary cause of cumulative trauma disorders (CMD) such as neck, shoulder, and arm pain…even carpal tunnel syndrome.

There are things you can do to avoid CMD such as proper ergonomics, frequent micro-breaks, and plenty of exercise, rest, and proper nutrition (lots of plant foods which are anti-inflammatory). It’s also a good idea to drink lots of water throughout the day.

In the even that you do develop neck, shoulder, or arm pain, you should be aware that there are natural solutions such as chiropractic, physical therapy and massage that are scientifically proven to be very effective. In fact, studies have shown the combination of chiropractic adjustments and low tech exercises that chiropractors teach patients to be the best treatment for neck and shoulder pain.

The last thing you want to do is get caught up in taking over the counter or prescription pain pills which could lead to dependency or side effects and complications…natural is best.

Ice is also a good home remedy as is a cervical neck pillow such as the Tempur-Pedic neck pillow.

If you have developed neck or shoulder pain and would like to find out if you are a candidate for neck and shoulder pain treatment in San Francisco, please call 415-392-2225.

Whiplash: What’s Best Rest or Treatment?

whiplash treatment downtown SF

Whiplash Treatment in San Francisco

We have been providing treatment for whiplash in downtown San Francisco for over 20 years.

Whiplash, or WAD (whiplash associated disorders) results from the rapid movement of the neck and head resulting in injury. This is the net result of the “classic” motor vehicle collision, though other injury models (like slips and falls) can result in similar injuries. Last month, we listed basic facts, of which one was better results (less long-term pain and disability) occurred from initial active treatment of the neck with mobilization/manipulation, exercise, and encouraging movement vs. placing a collar on the patient and “resting” the injured neck. Though there are a few studies that suggest there is no difference in results, the majority state that it is BEST to actively treat the patient and encourage movement (of course, assuming no unstable fractures have occurred) rather than to place the patient into a collar and limit activities. The first question that we’ll address this month is, why is this important?

The simple answer is that you, as an advocate for an injured friend, family member or as a patient yourself, may NOT be offered “the best” treatment approach by the ER or primary care physician. In fact, one study cited a survey regarding the management of whiplash injuries in an ER and reported that between 23-47% of physicians prescribed a soft cervical collar for acute whiplash rather than promoting immediate active treatment. By knowing this information, the knowledgeable patient can refuse the collar method of care and seek care that emphasizes the use of early mobilization and manipulation, like chiropractic! Though referrals to chiropractors are increasing as more research becomes available, chiropractic care is still significantly ignored or not considered by many practicing ER and primary care physicians. As always, you need to be your own “best advocate,” and the only way to do that is to be informed, hence the intention of this Health Update! Some studies even report that the use of a collar may have deleterious or “bad” side effects and can actually make you WORSE (this was reported by the Quebec Task Force)! The majority of studies on the subject of whiplash report that encouraging “normal activity,” as opposed to immobilization, IS the best approach. We will certainly help steer you in the right direction!

Next, let’s talk about WHY does this method works better? The research supports that soft tissues injuries heal better and with less scar tissue formation when patients receive active treatment/early activity types of care (like manipulation / chiropractic). In general, any treatment approach that reduces patient suffering sooner, encourages one to return to “normal activities” faster, and promotes independence and self-care methods earlier is the best approach!

We realize you have a choice in whom you consider for your health care provision and we sincerely appreciate your trust in choosing our service for those needs.  If you, a friend, or family member requires care for Whiplash, we would be honored to render our services.

To schedule an appointment for whiplash treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.

Pinched Nerve in the Neck?

DRXC spinal decompression SFWe have been providing neck pain relief in San Francisco since 1992.

One of the most common causes of neck, shoulder, arm, and hand pain is a “pinched nerve in the neck”. A pinched nerve is medical terminology (formerly doctor slang) for pressure on a nerve or nerve compression.

Here is how the Mayo Clinic defines a Pinched Nerve:

A pinched nerve occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by
surrounding tissues — such as bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons. This
pressure disrupts the nerve’s function, causing pain, tingling,
numbness or weakness.

A pinched nerve can occur at several sites in your body. A herniated
disk in your lower spine, for example, may put pressure on a nerve root,
causing pain that radiates down the back of your leg (sciatica).
Likewise, a pinched nerve in your wrist can lead to pain and numbness in
your hand and fingers (carpal tunnel syndrome).

Me: A pinched nerve in the neck is usually the result of a herniated or bulging cervical disc, vertebral subluxation (misalignment), degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, or moderate to severe sprain/strain from say a whiplash or sports injury (think football). This can happen all at once from a trauma or slowly over time from sitting in an awkward position at your workstation, poor sleeping habits (flat pillow with no support), or hobby’s like bowling, playing a musical instrument, knitting, or gardening.

These days, just about everyone spends a lot of time on the computer. Our chiropractic clinic is located in the SF Financial District so almost all our patients sit at a desk for very long hours performing repetitive tasks with the upper extremities on the computer. Many then go home and do more of the same. And a very high percentage of these people already had misalignments in the neck from years of school, studying, sports and life. The stress of working at the computer all day is just another layer of the onion that can accelerate the degnerative process and lead to pinched cervical nerves.

So, what can be done to prevent pinched nerves from happening and what is the best treatment once they do happen?

Well, I am a chiropractor, and I specialize in the treatment of neck, arm, and hand pain. So my opinion is biased owards chiropractic care and nonsurgical spinal decompression. Of course, most of the patients I treat are already experiencing pain and dysfunction. So, our primary focus is to treat the problem and get some relief. We do this using a combination of chiropractic adjustments to the neck, shoulder, arms and hands. We incorporate massage and stretching into the mix, as well as custom low tech exercises. If needed, we use deep tissue laser therapy to reduce inflammation and pain levels.

If a pinched nerve is due to a herniated or bulging disc and the patient does not respond to conventional chiropractic as described above than we will consider cervical spinal decompression with the DRX9000c. The DRX9000c is designed and built to treat cervical disc herniations naturally.

Sometimes we use a combination of everything we have to achieve favorable outcomes. Our 20years+ experience comes in handy when it comes to making decisions on pinched nerve treatment.

Along side the treatment we teach our patients how to prevent what we treat by making better lifestyle choices. Education on things like ergonomics, sleeping postures, nutrition, supplements, exercise/stretching, meditation and relaxation techniques are some of the things we weave into the treatment process.

If you would like to find out if you are a candidate for treatment at our San Francisco Chiropractic Clinic please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Treatment of Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain treatment in san francisco
We have been providing natural solutions for shoulder pain in downtown San Francisco for over 20 years now. We use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, deep tissue laser therapy, massage, Graston Technique, and KinesioTaping.

Treatment of Shoulder pain can be tricky…especially if it involves Rotator Cuff Injuries. Here is what the Mayo Clinic has to say about Rotator Cuff Injuries:

Rotator cuff injury includes any type of irritation or damage to your
rotator cuff muscles or tendons. Causes of a rotator cuff injury may
include falling, lifting and repetitive arm activities — especially
those done overhead, such as throwing a baseball or placing items on
overhead shelves.

Rotator cuff injury signs and symptoms may include:

  • Pain and tenderness in your shoulder, especially when reaching
overhead, reaching behind your back, lifting, pulling or sleeping on the
    affected side
  • Shoulder weakness
  • Loss of shoulder range of motion
  • Inclination to keep your shoulder inactive

The most common symptom is pain. You may experience it when you reach up
to comb your hair, bend your arm back to put on a jacket or carry
something heavy. Lying on the affected shoulder also can be painful. If
you have a severe injury, such as a large tear, you may experience
continuous pain and muscle weakness.

When to see a doctor
You should see your doctor if:

  • You’re experiencing severe shoulder pain
  • You’re unable to use your arm or feel weak in the arm
  • You have shoulder pain that’s lasted more than a week

Click here for Mayo Clinic Rotator Cuff Injuries (full article).

There are also many other causes of shoulder pain such as tendonitis, bursitis, misalignment of shoulder joints, sprains, strains, or tears.

In my experience, the body is able to heal most of these types of injuries with the right kind of treatment. Deep tissue laser therapy penetrates deep into the soft tissues and is attracted to damaged inflamed tissue. It stimulates healing and accelerates inflammation and pain reduction. We use our laser frequently for shoulder pain. Chiropractic adjustments to the neck, shoulders and arms done using proper technique and force is probably the best treatment. And of course massage and other soft tissue therapies such as Active Release Technique (ART), Graston, and Trigger Points, help to reduce muscle spams, adhesion’s, and scar tissue formation.

In any case…if you would like to find out if you are a candidate for Shoulder Pain Treatment in San Franciso please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Treatment for Shoulder Pain in San Francisco

Shoulder pain treatment san franciscoWe have been providing shoulder pain treatment in San Francisco for over 21 years now.

Our “Patient of the Week” is Choung Phung. Choung was searching for shoulder pain relief but was unable to find treatment that could help. She searched online and can across some of our patient reviews talking about how we had helped their neck, shoulder, arm and hand pains. So, Choung decided she would give us a shot.

Well, several weeks later Choung has a dramatic reduction in her shoulder, neck, and upper back pain. She has more range of motion, and is able to carry things and sleep with much less pain.

The thing about shoulder pain is that it can linger and become chronic and debilitating without proper treatment.

Chiropractors seek to restore shoulder joint alignment, motion, and function. We use a combination of chiropractic adjustments to the neck, upper back and shoulder, along with massage, traction, ice, exercises and deep tissue laser therapy. We will also use Kinesiotape if the injury needs to be stabilized and supported.

We treat shoulder pain frequently at our San Francisco chiropractic clinic as the majority of our patients are sitting at the desk all day doing repetitive movements with their upper extremities.

To find out if you are a candidate for treatment for shoulder pain in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.
