Chiropractic and the Office Worker

People that spend the majority of their day sitting at a desk in front of a computer expose themselves to a unique set of risk factors. Prior to the technological revolution office workers would be doing a variety of tasks and were not confined to their workstations for hours on end with minimal breaks.

Now it seems staffs have been downsized to increase productivity and those lucky enough to have a job are spending even more time in front of the computer. Some even go home and work more. It’s no wonder there has been an increase in back and neck pain new patients at our clinics of late.

So what can be done to prevent musculoskeletal related  back and neck pain from sitting and working longs hours in front of a computer?

Well, chances are if you have a desk job you will be doing this for many years. This is how you will be putting food on the table. And, it’s also very likely that you spent 15-20 years in school sitting at a desk…and that you started your career with some sort of back or neck pain ailment.

My Advice: Treat your body as if you are a professional athlete and your work is your sport. If you do this you will reduce the odds of work related injuries which can also predispose you to sports injuries and chronic pain syndromes.

One of the primary tools of those in the know, including professional athletes, is chiropractic care. That’s right…most athletes get adjusted on a regular basis to reduce the odds of injury and speed up recovery from the stress and strain of training and performing.

And here’s the deal: You have access to the same chiropractors that the professional athletes use. The same doctors, the same technologies such as deep tissue laser therapy, ultrasound, Graston Techniques, Active Release Techniques (ART), and more. Neck Pain From Sleeping?

Are You Using a Cervical Pillow?

We have been providing neck pain treatment in San Francisco since 1992.

One of the more common complaints in a chiropractic office is a patient complaining of neck pain from sleeping. More often than not the symptoms are ongoing but this episode is worse than normal. Some patients experience neck and shoulder pain and others headaches as well.

What causes this and what can be done about it?

Well…believe it or not the fix for morning neck pain may be easier than you think.  The first questions your chiropractor will probably ask you (and we ask all of our new patients these two questions) are this:

1. Do you use a cervical pillow when you sleep?

2. Do you sleep on your stomach?

When you sleep on your stomach you need to have your head turned so you can breath…this means you are sleeping with the spine twisted. The spine is also flat when you sleep on your stomach. Twisted and flat is the the worst possible thing for your neck. And even worse…most stomach sleepers have been doing this their entire life.

A cervical pillow is designed and built to support the spine in it’s normal alignment when you are on your back or on your side. These are the only positions you should sleep in. The pillow we prefer is the Tempur-Pedic Neck Pillow, but there are many other excellent pillows out there.

In addition, You may also need a some chiropractic adjustments as well as some home exercises to help restore the curve in your neck that you have most likely lost from years of sleeping on your stomach. Your new pillow will help to restore your neck curve. You should start feeling better right away because chances are the problem has been eliminated, though there can be a break in period for some with the pillow. Stick with it.

Your chiropractor will also show you proper ergonomics techniques as well as stretches you can do at your desk at work to counteract the stresses of sitting for long periods. Poor ergonomics can be a contributing factor to neck pain and headaches.

So there you go. If you have neck pain from sleeping your first stop should be the chiropractor. And if you don’t have a cervical pillow please get one. The best thing to do is to go to a store that has a variety or to a chiropractor that sells them. You will need to be fitted to make sure you get the right size and foam density.

The Damaging Effects of Whiplash

Considering how many people take public transportation into downtown San Francisco where we are located, we sure do see a lot of whiplash cases. Some of this has to do with the fact that we have always put a special emphasis on helping whiplash patients.

Whiplash is nothing to mess around with. It is thought that many cases of chronic neck, back and shoulder pain and headaches as well,  can be traced back to previously untreated whiplash injuries or whiplash injuries that were not treated properly.

In general, whiplash victims are typically more concerned about their cars than they are about their bodies. Especially if the symptoms are not severe.

This is a big mistake as even a very low impact motor vehicle collision can cause permanent bodily damage. This is true even if the symptoms seem minimal at the time.

Think about it. Much of the force of the impact goes right into your body. In addition, your head is the weight of a bowling ball and is supported by the neck muscles and soft tissues. When you are involved in an auto accident your head tends to whip back and forth which can rip and tear the muscles, ligaments and tendons as well as knock your spine out of alignment. This is called whiplash.

If this injury to your spine and soft tissues is not treated properly (immediately is best) it can result in scar tissue, spinal degeneration, arthritis, and herniated or bulging discs down the road…even spinal stenosis. The time to treat a motor vehicle accident trauma is ASAP.

Most chiropractors can help you with whiplash. Some put more emphasis on it and are better equipped to help you.

Headaches From Sitting at the Computer?

Headaches Relief in San Francisco

We have been treating headaches in San Francisco for over 23 years.  

Headaches are fairly common…especially with people that spend a lot of time on the computer like most of our chiropractic patients in the San Francisco Financial District.

Sitting for long periods in front of a computer can cause static muscle tension in the back, neck and shoulder muscles. Constant tension on the neck and shoulder muscles which attach to the head can cause tension headaches that can become chronic (lasting over 90 days) and debilitating.

Poor ergonomics can also contribute to computer related neck pain and headaches. As can lack of proper (frequent) micro-breaks, which are brief resting periods (typically 1-2 minutes) that allow the muscles to rest and recover.

In addition, you could be compounding the problem by sleeping on your stomach or using a soft pillow. It’s always best to sleep on your back or side with an orthopedic pillow like a Tempur-Pedic Pillow.

If you do get a sore neck at home there are stretches you can do as well as ice techniques to reduce inflammation, pain and muscle spasms.  Your chiropractor is your best resource for these.  You can also search Google or YouTube. Chiropractic For Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain Treatment with Chiropractic

We have been providing treatment for shoulder pain in San Francisco since 1992. 

Shoulder pain is fairly common these days, especially with office workers who spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer doing repetitive motions with the upper extremities.  often times there is associated neck, arm and hand pain.

There are 3 primary causes of shoulder pain:

1. Acute shoulder pain from trauma or injury such as a sports injury or auto accident.

2. Cumulative Trauma Disorder from doing repetitive shoulder and upper extremity movements over time.

3. Chronic shoulder pain, which is pain that persists for over 3 months. It is usually the result of 1 or 2 above,

Unfortunately, a visit to the chiropractor is not high on the list of someone that is experiencing a bout of shoulder pain. Typically, they do nothing or visit a medical doctor. Some sharp medical doctors will refer out for physical therapy or even chiropractic. Many will still prescribe painkillers and muscle relaxers (bad news). Drugs typically only mask the symptoms and do not address the cause.

Over the past 23 years we have treated thousands of cases of shoulder pain at our chiropractic clinic in San Francisco. The treatment methods (depending on the actual problem) we use are as follows:

Sciatica From Sitting Long Periods

Most of the people we provide chiropractic services to in the SF Financial District spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer for long periods. This is very hard on the body…especially the low back.

Sciatica (pain that travels down the leg/s) occurs when there is pressure on the sciatic nerve or nerve roots. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and is formed by branches of nerves that exit from in between the bones in your low back.  Pressure on these nerves, which are very sensitive to pressure, can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg/s.

The primary cause of sciatica is a bulging or herniated disc in the lumbar spine (low back).  A herniated or bulging disc is a condition whereby the center (gelatinous) portion of the spinal disc pushes through the fibrous contain walls of the disc and irritates the spinal nerve roots or nerves.

A herniated disc can happen from a trauma such as a car accident, sports injury, or slip and fall. Or, more commonly, develop over time from abnormal wear and tear due to poor ergonomics or sleeping postures, stress, not enough rest, and life.

Obesity is a primary cause of back pain, sciatica and disc herniations  because it puts relentless stress of the joints of the spine, muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Sitting all day for years and years can take it’s toll too. Especially if you are overweight or do not live a healthy lifestyle.

There are things you can do to counteract the negative effects of sitting for long periods. Exercise is high on the list. Chiropractic adjustments are also. Frequent breaks can help, especially if you stretch and walk around in between sitting. Drinking lots of water and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables with have anti-inflammatory effects can help too.

We also recommend deep breathing techniques and Yoga as a way to counter the negative effects of mental stress and the physical effects of sitting.

Unfortunately, sitting for long periods has also been linked to heart attacks and strokes…even cancer.  The moral of the story is that we need to move around way more than was previously thought. Doing so will not only reduce the odds of developing sciatica…it will also be good for your heart and overall health and wellbeing.

Managing Low Back Pain

We have been providing treatment for low back pain in San Francisco for over 22 years. 

Male Patient Visiting Doctor's Office With Back AcheOver 80% of the population will experience low back pain at some point in their lives. Many will develop chronic low back pain which is back pain that persists for over 90 days. Some will develop low back pain that goes away…but then it returns and becomes worse. Some get low back pain that goes away and never returns…and everything in between. Just about every case is unique and should be treated as such.

Sciatica, which is pain down the leg or legs due to pressure on the sciatic nerve can also result from the same underlying causes of low back pain. In fact, you can have sciatica and not have back pain at all…just the pain, numbness, or abnormal sensations in the leg. Most patients with low back pain just have low back pain with varying levels of severity.

The causes of low back pain are many. Things like obesity or weight gain can put too much stress on the low back and cause low back pain. If this persists it can result in thinning of the discs, disc degeneration, bulging and herniated spinal discs, and spinal stenosis. Since 2/3 of Americans are overweight or obese this is a primary cause.

Then there are injuries to the spine from sports, exercising, car accidents, poor posture and ergonomics, bad sleeping habits, slips and falls, traveling, and other activities of life.

Here are some of the more common conditions that cause Low Back Pain:  

  • Lumbar sprain or strain
  • Herniated or Bulging Disc
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Facet Syndrome
  • Scoliosis
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Vertebral Subluxation and Misalignment
  • Spondylolisthesis

The good news is the low back pain responds very favorable to chiropractic adjustments. This is good because often times the true cause is not known. That’s right…you can take 10 different doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, medical, whatever, and get 10 different opinions. I sure would not want to be getting back surgery under these conditions. But chiropractic…sure, why not? Chiropractic is 100% natural and very very safe…and gentle too.

Heck…all you care about is getting rid of your low back pain right? Not many patients care about the name the doctor gives it…and why should you?

Here is an excerpt from an article entitled The Mysteries of Low Back Pain on the great website Chiro-Trust.org

Do you realize how complicated the low back region is when it comes to investigating the cause of low back pain (LBP)? There can be findings on an x-ray, MRI, or CT scan such as degenerative disk disease, arthritis, even bulging and/or herniated disks that have NOTHING to do with why the back hurts. Similarly, there are often other abnormal findings present in many of us who have NO low back pain whatsoever! Because of this seemingly paradoxical situation, we as clinicians must be careful not to over-diagnose based on the presence of these “abnormal findings” AND on the same hand, be careful not to under-diagnose them as well.

Looking further into this interesting paradox, one study reported findings that support this point. Investigators examined 67 asymptomatic individuals who had NO prior history of low back pain and evaluated them using magnetic resonant imaging (MRI). They found 21 of the 67 (31%) had an identifiable disk and/or spinal canal abnormality (which is where the spinal cord and nerves run). Seven years later, this same group of non-suffering individuals were once again contacted to see if they had developed any back problems within that time frame. The goal of the study was to determine if one could “predict” who might develop low back pain based on certain abnormal imaging findings in non-suffering subjects. A questionnaire was sent to each of these individuals, of which 50 completed and returned the questionnaire. A repeat MRI scan was performed on 31 of these subjects, and two neurologists and one orthopedic spine surgeon interpreted the MRI studies using a blinded approach (without having knowledge about the subject’s symptoms or lack thereof). Each level was assessed for abnormalities including disk bulging/herniation and degeneration. Those who had initial abnormal findings were defined as “progressed” (worsened) if an increased severity of the original finding was evident or if additional or new spinal levels had become involved over the seven-year time span.

Of the 50 who returned the questionnaire, 29 (58%) had NO low back pain. Full story here

Bottom Line: It’s easy to get all caught-up in a bunch of unnecessary diagnostic testing and doctors visits. My recommendation is to make the first visit to the chiropractor…it will most likely also be your last.

Chiropractic Treatment For Posture Problems Related To Sitting

We have been providing posture related chiropractic treatment in San Francisco for over 23 years.

The majority of the patients we treat in downtown San Francisco spend most of their day sitting in front of a computer. This is after having already spent most of their lives sitting  at a desk in school. It’s just the way it is.

Now this is all well and good if something is being done to counteract the negative effects of sitting all day. Because we are living organisms, we adapt to our external environment. If the external environment is sitting in front of a computer, than our body’s will adapt to this.

Office workers over time tend to develop a forward head posture (FHP) and a rounded upper back. The shoulders also roll forward.

This is bad news because this posture puts more stress on the bones in the neck and upper back than they were designed to resist. This causes them to degenerate and become unstable. Because of this, the neck and upper back muscles have to work harder which can lead to all sorts of physical problems such as headaches, neck pain, upper back pain, shoulder and arm pain, and insomnia.

As time goes on the condition can become worse leading to chronic pain and disability.

In addition, there have been numerous studies over the past several years that show people that sit most of the day have a higher risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer, and early death.

Great…so what can you do about it?

Well, the way we see it is that by design we need to be getting a lot of exercise…life is motion.  So the solution is simple…increase physical activity…a lot. Walk more, take stairs, take breaks and walk around. Heck…you can even get a life cycle or exercise bike at your desk or workstation.  Go on a walk when you get home, before work, whatever…just start moving around a lot more than you do.

As far as the poor posture goes…well, that’s where chiropractic comes into play. We are the posture experts. We can help correct your forward head posture (FHP) as well and any other parts of your spine or body that are out of normal alignment and position. We can help you adjust your workstation, sleeping positions, workouts, and exercise patterns so that you have a way to counteract the negative effects of sitting all day.

How Many Chiropractic Adjustments Do You Need?

During this time we have delivered hundreds of thousands of chiropractic adjustments to tens of thousands of patients.  So…we know a thing or to about how they work.
