Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Maybe, Maybe Not!

carpal tunnel san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Downtown San Francisco for over 23 years.

Most of the patients we treat spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer doing repetitive motions Many go on to do more computer work at home. Some are even on the computer or smart phone as they commute to and from work. OUCH!

We are simply not designed to be sitting for long periods doing the same thing over and over.  In fact, we are designed to be doing just the opposite…running and hunting for food. Our bodies need constant motion in order to function properly.

When we sit all day the muscles in the neck and back are in a constant state of tension. Plus, our posture tends to take on hunched-over position we are in. This can cause pressure on the nerves in the neck that travel down the arms and control the hands. Pressure on the nerves can cause the same symptoms you experience when you have carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

The classic signs and symptoms of CTS are as follows:

  • Hand pain
  • Numbness and Tingling in the hand
  • Night pain
  • Neck pain
  • Pain that radiates from the hand to the elbow or neck
  • Weakness of grip

Again, pressure on the nerves in the neck cause the same symptoms This is why so many carpal tunnel surgeries fail. It was not the true problem. The nerve involved in true CTS is the Median Nerve. It is actually formed by branches of the cervical nerves (neck). This is why the symptoms are the same. True CTS is when there is compression of the median nerve in the wrist. This is a far less likely scenario than compression on the nerves in the neck. It is also easier to treat the neck. Results can typically be seen right away.

Some of the conditions in the neck area that can pinch the nerves that innervate the arm and hand are as follows:

  • Bulging and herniated discs
  • Vertebral Subluxation
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Facet Syndrome
  • Spinal Degeneration
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Cervical Rib

So there you go. Changes are if you have CTS Symptoms you don’t have true CTS. And one more thing…

Not all doctors know how to treat CTS and related disorders. Chiropractors are experts and some (like us) even specialize in treating neck, arm, and hand pain. The treatment is 100% natural s usually covered by insurance (we belong to most plans).

To find out more about CTS check out the other blog posts on this blog.

Neck Pain, Headaches and Stress

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Neck pain and headaches treatment SF When we are experiencing mental stress it causes our muscles to become tense…mostly in the upper back, neck, and across the shoulders. This can lead to neck pain and headaches. If the stress is ongoing, the headaches and neck pain can become chronic (pain that persists for over 90 days).

All of us handle stress differently. Some people thrive under stress and perform at their best. Others get sick and unable to function…and everything in between.

I have been practicing chiropractic in downtown San Francisco for almost 20 years now. My patients have been mostly office workers and executives that are working long hours trying to make a name for themselves or further their careers. For the most part…it's the life they choose.

They understand that the SF Financial District is the corporate jungle and in order to get ahead they have to work very long hours in a stressful go go environment.

What many don't realize when they start is how stressful this can be on your body…even if you are young. And if you have any weak links as far as health conditions that tend to flair-up when you are under stress…look-out, because here they come.

Neck pain and headaches are probably the 2 most common stress related symptoms we treat at Executive Express Chiropractic. Here are the 7 most common symptoms of stress:

1. Headaches

2. Fatigue

3. Neck, shoulder, back tension or pain

4. Sleeping problems

5. irritability or mood swings

6. Digestive Disturbances/hormone problems

7. Allergies or sinus problems

My Take: There are things you can do to increase your ability to manage and resist stress. Chiropractic adjustments help to keep the spine, musculoskeletal system, and nervous system in balance which can help with all 7 of the most common symptoms of stress.

A healthy (I prefer vegan) diet, plenty of exercise, rest, and lots of water can also increase your resistance to stress. As will a good cervical pillow and ergonomic chair at work.

Hey…once we become adults we own the keys to the Porsche (our body's). We are the ones that make all decisions about what we eat, when we exercise and how often, how much rest we get, if we see a chiropractor on a regular basis, etc.

From what I have noticed…the people than learn to strike that balance between really hard work and longs hours…and a healthy "chiropractic" lifestyle…seem to do the best…in health and in wealth.

Bust just know…the greatest wealth is health!

Lumbar Disc Decompression Without Surgery

DRX9000 San Francisco
San Francisco Spinal Decompression Doctor Comments:

Up until recently, lumbar disc decompression referred to a surgical procedure whereby part of the spine was cut-out to remove pressure off the spinal cord or lumbar nerve roots.

Now, the lumbar disc decompression or spinal disc decompression terms refer to procedures that can be either surgical or nonsurgical.

At Executive Express Chiropractic in the SF Financial District, we perform nonsurgical spinal decompression with a machine called the DRX9000. The DRX9000 was designed and built to treat neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated discs, bulging discs, facet syndrome, and disc degeneration….without surgery (watch this spinal decompression success story video).

Nonsurgical disc decompression helps many patients avoid back surgery, but you have to qualify medically (How does spinal decompression work?).

If you do qualify for natural disc decompression then there is a very good chance it will help you.

Will you get completely better? Sometimes…but in most cases (at Executive Express Chiropractic) you simply become much better than you were. It just depends what we are starting with, your age, your over-all physical condition, how much spinal degeneration there is, how many disc herniations you have,  and your level of commitment to get better.

Nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 or one of the other excellent spinal decompression machines on the market might just be the answer you are looking for. And let me give you a piece of advice…Don't listen to the naysayers.

Nonsurgical spinal decompression is helping thousands of patients every day return to more normal lives and avoid surgery. And the only way to find out if it will work for YOU is to try it (but you must qualify).

Here's the deal…Spinal decompression is very safe…and it's gentle too. Sure there have been some rare cases where patients get really sore or think the machine made them worse…but it's extremely rare. In fact, we can count on one hand the amount of times this has happened and we have performed thousands of decompression sessions for herniated lumbar discs (and cervical discs).

Either spinal disc decompression works (which is most likely) or it doesn't. We don't cut anything out or inject anything in (to your body). If decompression therapy does not work you are still left whole, and you can pursue other options.

If you have certain kinds of back surgery such as a surgical fusion, you are disqualified from ever trying nonsurgical spinal decompression. It's something to think about.

My Take: If you have a condition such as a herniated lumbar disc, bulging disc, spinal stenosis, degenerated disc, facet syndrome, sciatica, back pain, leg pain…or any other lumbar or cervical spine disorder that is not responding to conventional back pain therapies (including chiropractic)…natural disc decompression is worth a look. You can always have surgery. But if you have surgery….you may not be able to try nonsurgical spinal decompression…ever.

To find out if you qualify for spinal disc decompression at Executive Express Chiropractic in San Francisco call 415-392-2225 and mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

Can Cervical Disc Herniations be Treated Without Surgery?

San Francisco Spinal Decompression Doctor Comments:

We have been helping patients avoid neck surgery with nonsurgical spinal decompression for many years now at Executive Express Chiropractic. Some of our patients have even had before and after cervical MRI films taken which have shown measurable reductions in the cervical herniation or disc bulge. One such patient is David Bain…and here's what he has to say about nonsurgical spinal decompression treatment to the cervical spine with the DRX9000c:

If you are suffering with neck pain, upper back pain, pain radiating into the arms, weakness of the upper extremities, numbness or tingling in the hands, or night pain…you may have a herniated disc in the neck. Or…maybe you have already had a cervical MRI and you know you have a disc herniation in the neck…you just don't know what to do about it. Well…you may be a candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression to the cervical spine with the DRX9000c.

If you live or work near the San Francisco Financial District, you can visit Executive Express Chiropractic at the Embarcadero Center. Please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation with one of our doctors.

San Francisco Spinal Decompression Treats Disc Herniations Without Surgery

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Images[2] We have been helping patients with chronic, debilitating back and neck pain for over 17 years in the SF Financial District (see San Francisco Spinal Decompression). One of the most common causes of severe back and neck pain are cervical and lumbar disc herniations…often thought to be untreatable without surgery.

For the first 13 years in downtown San Francisco I treated spinal disc herniations with chiropractic adjustments, massage, exercise, and conventional traction….with great success. But there was a subset of herniated disc patients (about 20%) that just did not seem to respond to our back pain or neck pain treatment regimens…or to anything else for that matter. They either had to just learn to live with the pain or consider risky surgeries.

Then, about 4 years ago I was introduced to nonsurgical spinal decompression, which is when I bought my first machine. At first I was skeptical (as is my nature), but I did quite a bit of research before I pulled the trigger as these spinal decompression machines are quite expensive. The decompression machine that I use, which treats herniated discs in the neck, and herniated lumbar discs, cost around $150,000…so I wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing.

Well…here we are 4 years later and we have helped hundreds of San Francisco disc herniation patients return to more normal lives. Sure the machines have not helped everyone…but success rates are very high (see Spinal Decompression Special Report). And best of all…it is drug-less and nonsurgical…and for the most part painless.

The specific neurovascular conditions decompression therapy may be able to help are disc herniations, disc bulges, spinal stenosis, facet syndromes, and degenerative disc disease. Most patients have combinations of all of the above.

While nonsurgical spinal decompression is NOT a magic bullet, it might just be the answer to your back pain or neck pain nightmare…it's certainly worth consideration.

Will A Herniated Lumbar Disc Heal On It’s Own?

San Francisco Spinal Decompression Doctor Comments:

Images1 I have been treating herniated discs in the SF Financial District for over 16 years now.

I have helped hundreds, if not thousands of herniated disc patients return to more normal lifestyles…some have had complete recoveries.

During this time…one of the most common questions I have been asked is…

Will my herniated lumbar disc heal by itself?

And, this is a great question…and the answer is…maybe. Some do-some don’t.

Heck…there are people every day that suffer herniated discs in the low back and never even know it.

It’s the patients that know they have herniated discs that are not responsive to conventional treatment methods that are the problem. They are a small subset of the overall pool of people who have a herniated disc.

Why is this? Well…I guess it’s just the way the disc is positioned in the spinal canal or nerve channels. The disc fragments can get lodged in there in such a way that the body is unable to heal itself. This traps the nerve roots or puts pressure on the spinal cord, which can cause severe low back pain, sciatica, and all kinds of other problems.

Sometimes, traditional chiropractic can be very effective treatment for lumbar disc herniations. But sometimes it does nothing.

At my San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center, we incorporate Chiropractic, Nonsurgical Spinal Decompression, and Active Release Techniques (ART) to successfully manage most lumbar disc syndromes.

So yes, herniated discs do repair themselves when they can…but when they can’t they need some help…and it doesn’t have to be back surgery either. In fact…some say back surgery is a thing of the past. I don’t know about that…I think we need both surgical and nonsurgical treatments for everything.

Anyway…if you live or work near the SF Financial District, and would like to find out if you qualify for treatment at Executive Express Chiropractic at the Embarcadero Center…simply call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Eben Davis.

Stress and Back Pain

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

574344901 The stock market dropped over 500 points today. Lehman Brothers goes bankrupt. AIG on the brink of failure…OUCH. Since we are located in the San Francisco Financial District, many of our chiropractic patients are involved in the markets.

Days like today are tough…especially if your livelihood is on the line. The stress can go right into your muscles and cause them to tighten-up like guitar strings. Many of these muscles attach to your spine.

Stress induced muscle tension can actually pull the spine out of alignment…what we call a subluxation.  Subluxations can pinch nerves, causing headaches, neck pain, back pain…and more…it’s a chain reaction.

On days like today, it’s probably a good idea to hit the gym, get a massage, take a run, or have a chiropractic adjustment. You don’t really have much control over the stock market…but you do have control over how your body responds to stress.

If the stock market was always up there would never be any opportunity.

Take care of yourself, and live to fight another day.

Executive Express Chiropractic at the SF Embarcadero Center To Open Oct 1st, 2008

About_ecbldg1 Dr. Eben Davis Comments on new state of the art Chiropractic Center:

We are right on track to open our new clinic in less than 30 days. We will take possession of the new "built from scratch" back, neck, and wrist pain center on 9/19/2008. Then, we need to network our 12 touch-screen computers, learn the new paperless system, and train our new staff. We also need to have all the new furniture delivered, the new motorized Leander Chiropractic tables…and the new signs installed.

We will also move our DRX9000 nonsurgical spinal decompression machine to the new clinic, so we can treat disc herniations, disc bulges,  and advanced disc degeneration.

Also…behind the scenes we have a design team and programmers working on our new website. We expect to have the new site up and running a few days before the new clinic opens. So, there is a lot going on…but it all seems to be coming together.

We expect to have our Grand Opening party on 10/24/2008…we will keep you posted.

In the meantime…Executive Express Chiropractic is seeing patients at our administrative offices at One Embarcadero Center, Suite 500. San Francisco Financial District. We can be reached at 415-392-2225, press ext#1. Dr Eben Davis can be reached at: ebendavis@yahoo.com.
