Headaches and Sitting Long Periods

headache relief san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for headaches in San Francisco for over 23 years.

If you are someone that spends the majority of their time sitting at a desk in front of a computer, like most of our patients, you are prone to neck pain and headaches.

The reason for this is that  sitting long periods causes static muscle tension in the neck, back and shoulders. The neck muscles attach to the back of the head. Chronic tension on these muscles can cause pressure and pain in the head as well as neck, upper back, shoulder, arm or hand pain.

We are simply not designed to be sitting at a desk all day and we need to be proactive making sure we are doing things to counteract these negative stresses.

Here is a partial list of things you can do:

  1. Take frequent breaks and stretch and walk around.
  2. Make sure your workstation is ergonomically correct.
  3. Drink lots of water throughout the day.
  4. Eat lots of plant foods (anti-inflammatory).
  5. Get plenty of exercise.
  6. Get a desk that allows you to stand or sit.
  7. Do deep breathing exercises.

There are more but those will do for now. If you already have headaches then you should visit a chiropractor for an assessment. Depending on the type of headache and the nature and severity of your condition you may only need a few visits or you may need more.

The good news is that most headaches respond favorably to chiropractic, especially those related to sitting long periods.

So, prevention is best. But if you do get a headache then see your chiropractor.

If you live or work in San Francisco we have 2 clinics to serve you.

To find out if you are a candidate for headaches treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Maybe, Maybe Not!

carpal tunnel san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Downtown San Francisco for over 23 years.

Most of the patients we treat spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer doing repetitive motions Many go on to do more computer work at home. Some are even on the computer or smart phone as they commute to and from work. OUCH!

We are simply not designed to be sitting for long periods doing the same thing over and over.  In fact, we are designed to be doing just the opposite…running and hunting for food. Our bodies need constant motion in order to function properly.

When we sit all day the muscles in the neck and back are in a constant state of tension. Plus, our posture tends to take on hunched-over position we are in. This can cause pressure on the nerves in the neck that travel down the arms and control the hands. Pressure on the nerves can cause the same symptoms you experience when you have carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

The classic signs and symptoms of CTS are as follows:

  • Hand pain
  • Numbness and Tingling in the hand
  • Night pain
  • Neck pain
  • Pain that radiates from the hand to the elbow or neck
  • Weakness of grip

Again, pressure on the nerves in the neck cause the same symptoms This is why so many carpal tunnel surgeries fail. It was not the true problem. The nerve involved in true CTS is the Median Nerve. It is actually formed by branches of the cervical nerves (neck). This is why the symptoms are the same. True CTS is when there is compression of the median nerve in the wrist. This is a far less likely scenario than compression on the nerves in the neck. It is also easier to treat the neck. Results can typically be seen right away.

Some of the conditions in the neck area that can pinch the nerves that innervate the arm and hand are as follows:

  • Bulging and herniated discs
  • Vertebral Subluxation
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Facet Syndrome
  • Spinal Degeneration
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Cervical Rib

So there you go. Changes are if you have CTS Symptoms you don’t have true CTS. And one more thing…

Not all doctors know how to treat CTS and related disorders. Chiropractors are experts and some (like us) even specialize in treating neck, arm, and hand pain. The treatment is 100% natural s usually covered by insurance (we belong to most plans).

To find out more about CTS check out the other blog posts on this blog.

Headaches That Wont Go Away!

Headaches That Wont Go Away?

We have been providing treatment for headaches in San Francisco since 1992.

One of the most common complaints n a chiropractic office are headaches. Especially, chronic headaches, which are headaches that persist for over 90 days wont go away.

There are many underlying causes of headaches, and fortunately, most respond favorably to chiropractic case management.

During the past 23 years or so we have helped thousands of patients with headaches return to more normal “headache free” active lifestyles. Some were diagnosed with tension headaches, some with migraines, temporal headaches, unilateral headaches, whatever. A diagnosis is just a name…a way to label the symptoms. It’s really just a particular doctors opinion.

In reality, most headache symptoms overlap with each other which makes it very difficult to correctly classify it as one type of headache or the other.

Chiropractors tend to focus more on how to help the headache than how to name it.

Experience tells us the most headaches originate from misalignment’s or pinched nerves in the neck. The causes are usually poor posture or ergonomics,  a bad mattress or pillow, stress,  auto accidents (many left untreated), sports injuries, a short leg, on and on. The cause is usually mechanical.

Sure, there can be serious causes of headaches, but these are usually associated with headaches that are new and acute with sudden onset. These are very rare and involve infections, tumors or fractures.

Sometimes x-ray or MRI is necessary to quantify the problem in the neck.

Chiropractic treatment for headaches (at our clinic) typically consists of chiropractic adjustments, massage, stretching, low tech exercises, posture and ergonomic advice, a cervical pillow, and laser if needed. Visits take about 20-30 minutes. Results are outstanding.

In the event you have a serious headache or there are any “red flags” we have medical doctors at our primary clinic a few blocks away to check you out.

So, if you have headaches that wont go away and would like to be checked to see if you are a candidate for headaches treatment in San Francisco, please call 415-392-2225.

Most insurance accepted. Validated Parking Embarcadero Center.

Whiplash Treatment in San Francisco

whiplash treatment san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for whiplash in downtown San Francisco for over 23 years now.

Just about every day we treat a new patient with a whiplash injury…usually due to an auto accident. Many of our other new patients with chronic neck pain and headaches report previously untreated whiplash injuries.

That’s right, whiplash if not treated properly can lead to problems down the road such as neck and back pain, headaches, low back pain, insomnia, TMJ, and shoulder pain.

This is why it is so important to be seen right away after a car accident even if you have no symptoms. The spine and soft tissues are remarkably strong but are just not designed to handle the amount of forces even a 5 miles per hour impact can expose them to.

Chiropractors are the proven experts when it comes to the treatment of whiplash injuries. if you are in a serious auto accident it is probably a good idea to be checked out in the emergency room for fracture or dislocation, but that’s pretty much where it should end. Your next stop should be a chiropractor.

The most important thing when it comes to healing injured soft tissues sustained from whiplash trauma is “motion”. That’s right, without motion the joints will develop scar tissue which could lead to permanent damage and chronic pain. Chiropractors are motion experts even with badly injured patients. We also have technologies such as deep tissue laser therapy, ultrasound, and electro-stimulation to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Your chiropractor can also provide you with low-tech “do at home” exercises that are very important when it comes to restoring motion and recovering from a whiplash injury.

Our San Francisco Chiropractors are whiplash experts. We treat whiplash injuries day in and day out and have been doing so for over 20 years.

We also have 2 clinics to serve you and they are a short walking distance from one another. Our primary clinic is Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. which has an expert team of medical doctors, physical therapists, nurses, athletic trainers, and chiropractors. We also have state of the art diagnostic equipment such as digital x-ray and diagnostic ultrasound.

Our satellite clinic is located at the Embarcadero Center and offers express, no wait chiropractic, whiplash treatment and spinal decompression.

To schedule an appointment for whiplash treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Most insurance accepted. Validated Parking Embarcadero Center.

Neck Pain Relief in San Francisco

neck pain relief san franciscoWe have been providing neck pain treatment in downtown San Francisco for over 23 years now.

Neck pain is very common in people who spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer doing repetitive motions, which is what most of the work force does in the Financial District.

There are 3 basic types of neck pain:

  1. New and acute neck pain.
  2. Chronic neck pain (over 90 days duration).
  3. Repetitive Stress Injury (builds-up silently over time).

While most of the new patients we  see for neck pain report that their neck pain is new, it turns out that the problem has been building up silently under the surface due to things like poor ergonomics, stress (tenses neck muscles), poor sleeping habits (lack of cervical pillow), inadequate breaks at work (it’s best to take frequent stretch breaks), poor posture.

Sure, you can be using a cervical pillow, taking micro-breaks at work, meditating, and have a perfect workstation set-up and still get neck pain, but the odds are greatly reduced when these things are in place.

So what’s the best treatment for neck pain?

Well, according to research, chiropractic and low tech exercises (the kind chiropractors show you) is much more effective than OTC medications or physical therapy. It’s much more cost effective and takes less time as well. Here is an excerpt from Chiro-Trust.org entitled Chiropractic & Exercise vs. OTC Medication for Neck Pain:

However, this new research clearly supports that seeing a chiropractor and/or engaging in light exercise can bring neck pain relief more effectively than relying on pain medications! Researchers even found that the benefits of chiropractic adjustments were still favored A YEAR LATER when comparing the differences between the spinal manipulation and medication treated groups! Moderate acute neck pain is one of the most frequent complaints prompting appointments at primary care/medical clinics and is estimated to account for millions of doctor visits per year. In some cases, pain and stiffness occurs without a known cause and there is no “standard” medical treatment. Though physical therapy, pain medication, and chiropractic have all been utilized for neck pain, until now no one had compared the benefits of each in a single study.

The study consisted of 272 neck pain subjects split up into three groups: 1) Chiropractic group (approximately 20-minute treatments an average of 15 times); 2) Pain medication group (meds included acetaminophen, and in some cases stronger prescription meds including narcotics and muscle relaxants); 3) Physical Therapy group (consisting of meeting twice and receiving advice and exercise instruction at 5-10 repetitions up to eight times a day).

At the end of three months, the chiropractic and exercise group did significantly better than those who took drugs. Approximately 57% of those receiving chiropractic management and 48% of those who did the exercises reported at least 75% reduction in pain vs. 33% of people in the medication group. A year after the treatment period ended, the numbers decreased to 53% in the chiropractic and exercise groups, compared to 38% in pain medication group. The chiropractic group received the highest scores in patient satisfaction at all time points. An interesting downside noted in the medication study group was that the subjects had to use a progressively greater amount of medication at a progressively increased frequency to manage their pain. Stomach trouble is the most common side effect of NSAIDs (leading to ulcers) as well as liver and kidney problems. Another interesting finding was that the subjects in the medication treated group felt less empowered, less active, and less in control over their own condition compared with those in the other two groups.

Bottom Line:  Your best bet for neck pain relief in San Francisco or anywhere for that matter is chiropractic. Not only can your chiropractor provide your with the low tech exercises that are research proven to reduce neck pain, they can also help you get a cervical pillow, proper ergonomic set-up, and any thing else you may need to help your body adapt to modern day living and working.

Walk-In Chiropractic Downtown San Francisco

walk in chiropractor SFWe have been providing chiropractic in the San Francisco Financial District for over 22 years. We are located at the Embarcadero Center One with Validated Parking.

We have learned over the years that busy SF Office workers and city dwellers…and travelers, prefer the convenience of walk-in chiropractic service. After-all…time is money, right?

We have also learned that our patients do not have much tolerance for long ait times…so we have eliminated those also. We are also open 4 days per wee…Monday through Friday from 9-6pm. No complicated, hard to remember clinic hours here.

We also keep it simple when it comes to the chiropractic treatment itself. No long term treatment plans. Most of our patients pay by the visitor if they have insurance (and we are on most plans) it’s just a co-payment.

So, when neck pain, back pain, hand pain, or a headache strikes, no need to call…just come on down. You will never wait more than a few minutes for your adjustment and you will not get trapped either. A typical office visit which includes a short stretch and warm-up massage is less than 25 minutes from start to finish. We even have an “Express” visit if you are in a hurry an just want an adjustment.

Some of the more common conditions we treat are as follows:

  • Back and Neck Pain
  • Arm and Leg Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Whiplash
  • Herniated and Bulging Discs
  • Sports Injuries

Our main clinic which offers medical care, physical therapy, performance training, and specialised sports medicine is just a few blocks away in the event you need more than express chiropractic.

Managing Low Back Pain

We have been providing treatment for low back pain in San Francisco for over 22 years.

Male Patient Visiting Doctor's Office With Back AcheOver 80% of the population will experience low back pain at some point in their lives. Many will develop chronic low back pain which is back pain that persists for over 90 days. Some will develop low back pain that goes away…but then it returns and becomes worse. Some get low back pain that goes away and never returns…and everything in between. Just about every case is unique and should be treated as such.

Sciatica, which is pain down the leg or legs due to pressure on the sciatic nerve can also result from the same underlying causes of low back pain. In fact, you can have sciatica and not have back pain at all…just the pain, numbness, or abnormal sensations in the leg. Most patients with low back pain just have low back pain with varying levels of severity.

The causes of low back pain are many. Things like obesity or weight gain can put too much stress on the low back and cause low back pain. If this persists it can result in thinning of the discs, disc degeneration, bulging and herniated spinal discs, and spinal stenosis. Since 2/3 of Americans are overweight or obese this is a primary cause.

Then there are injuries to the spine from sports, exercising, car accidents, poor posture and ergonomics, bad sleeping habits, slips and falls, traveling, and other activities of life.

Here are some of the more common conditions that cause Low Back Pain:

  • Lumbar sprain or strain
  • Herniated or Bulging Disc
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Facet Syndrome
  • Scoliosis
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Vertebral Subluxation and Misalignment
  • Spondylolisthesis

The good news is the low back pain responds very favorable to chiropractic adjustments. This is good because often times the true cause is not known. That’s right…you can take 10 different doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, medical, whatever, and get 10 different opinions. I sure would not want to be getting back surgery under these conditions. But chiropractic…sure, why not? Chiropractic is 100% natural and very very safe…and gentle too.

Heck…all you care about is getting rid of your low back pain right? Not many patients care about the name the doctor gives it…and why should you?

Here is an excerpt from an article entitled The Mysteries of Low Back Pain on the great website Chiro-Trust.org

Do you realize how complicated the low back region is when it comes to investigating the cause of low back pain (LBP)? There can be findings on an x-ray, MRI, or CT scan such as degenerative disk disease, arthritis, even bulging and/or herniated disks that have NOTHING to do with why the back hurts. Similarly, there are often other abnormal findings present in many of us who have NO low back pain whatsoever! Because of this seemingly paradoxical situation, we as clinicians must be careful not to over-diagnose based on the presence of these “abnormal findings” AND on the same hand, be careful not to under-diagnose them as well.

Looking further into this interesting paradox, one study reported findings that support this point. Investigators examined 67 asymptomatic individuals who had NO prior history of low back pain and evaluated them using magnetic resonant imaging (MRI). They found 21 of the 67 (31%) had an identifiable disk and/or spinal canal abnormality (which is where the spinal cord and nerves run). Seven years later, this same group of non-suffering individuals were once again contacted to see if they had developed any back problems within that time frame. The goal of the study was to determine if one could “predict” who might develop low back pain based on certain abnormal imaging findings in non-suffering subjects. A questionnaire was sent to each of these individuals, of which 50 completed and returned the questionnaire. A repeat MRI scan was performed on 31 of these subjects, and two neurologists and one orthopedic spine surgeon interpreted the MRI studies using a blinded approach (without having knowledge about the subject’s symptoms or lack thereof). Each level was assessed for abnormalities including disk bulging/herniation and degeneration. Those who had initial abnormal findings were defined as “progressed” (worsened) if an increased severity of the original finding was evident or if additional or new spinal levels had become involved over the seven-year time span.

Of the 50 who returned the questionnaire, 29 (58%) had NO low back pain. Full story here

Bottom Line: It’s easy to get all caught-up in a bunch of unnecessary diagnostic testing and doctors visits. My recommendation is to make the first visit to the chiropractor…it will most likely also be your last.

The True Cause Of Most Headaches

headaches treatment in san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for headaches in San Francisco since 1992.

I know a little bit about headaches. When I was 23 years old and starting my career as a stockbroker I began to experience migraine headaches. They became progressively worse to the point I could no longer function normally. In fact, I became bedridden and developed an allergic reaction to the pain medication Percodan. It was not much fun.

I saw my family doctor, a headaches specialist, neurologist, ear, nose and throat doctor, a brain surgeon and a TMJ specialist. Nothing worked. I had blood tests, hearing tests, brain scans, MRI, cat scans and every test under the sun. At one point I was told to brace for the worst because my headaches had come on suddenly and that was a red flag.

Not once did anyone suggest that the cause could be physical. Not once did anyone mention the NECK as a possible cause or origination point of the headaches?

It wasn’t until one of my clients, a chiropractor, called me at home to see how I was doing. He told me that chiropractors had great success with headaches and that in spite of everything I had been through there wa a very high likelihood he could help. I did not know him that well at the time but I would have tried anything at that point.

Well, he took x-rays of my spine and did an exam. He told me I had pinched nerves in my neck and that this was a primary cause of headaches. I said how come all these medical experts never said anything about this? He said that’s a good question…one I hear every day.

Now this chiropractor was so busy that his waiting room looked like a Greyhound Bus terminal. To me thi could only be possible if he was helping people. So I gave it a shot. I did have a positive experience in high school with a chiropractor when I had suffered an injury to my neck playing football. As it would turn out, this was part of my headaches problem. Previous injuries  can create fertile soil for future problems.

Anyway, after just one visit I could tell I was feeling better. After a few weeks my headaches were almost gone. But get this…I still did not believe the chiropractic got rid of the headaches. I thought it was a coincidence. So as soon as I felt better I stopped.  The headaches came back. Then I thought it didn’t work. I know now this is a typical sequence of events.

In any case, I returned to the chiropractor (who ended up becoming my best friend)with my tail between my legs and finished what I started. I have been headaches free since. Not only that, it was because of this experience that I decided to switch gears and become a chiropractor. I became fascinated with it It was the best decision I have ever made.

My story is not unique…many chiropractors have their personal story of what lead them  into the profession. It’s one of the special bonds chiropractors have with each other.

I have been a chiropractor for over 22 years now and I have personally treated over 10,000 headaches patients. Because of my personal experience I was able to understand what they were going through and effectively treat the overwhelming majority of them.

In my opinion, the true cause of most headaches are misalignments (vertebral subluxations) in the neck. And the best treatment for headaches is chiropractic. And research supports this. Cjeck-out this article on the great chiropractic consumer website Chiro-Trust.org entitled The Neck and Headache Connection.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

carpal tunnel treatment san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and related disorders in San Francisco for over 22 years now.

Here is an excerpt from an article on the great chiropractic consumer website Chiro-trust.org entitled Carpal Tunnel Syndrome-What Is It?:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) basically occurs when pressure is applied to the median nerve as it travels through the wrist on the palm side resulting in numbness, tingling, pain, and later, weakness of the grip and pinch functions. But, the median nerve can be pinched at many other locations as it courses down from the neck to the hand, which is why we examine and treat the CTS patient from the neck down! The median nerve has been described as the “eye of the hand,” as it is one of the three major nerves formed from the brachial plexus– that “highway” of nerves made up of the C5-T2 roots leaving the neck, merging together to eventually form the three main nerves of the arm. Because the median nerve function regulates pinch and grip strength, buttoning a shirt, writing a note, driving a car, and even sleeping are ALL affected by a median nerve pinch.

So, since the median nerve originates in the neck, and carpal tunnel symptoms are mostly in the hand, the neck-hand connection is often overlooked by doctors and therapist that do not routinely treat CTS.

Our carpal tunnel doctors in San Francisco have been treating CTS since before the dotcom boom-bust. In fact, we have successfully treated over 20,000 cases of carpal tunnel symptoms and upper extremity disorders. The secret is to ALWAYS examine and treat from the neck to the fingertips…on both sides. At our clinic we also check the entire spine and feet. A pedal imbalance such as a pronation or short leg can cause cervical muscle spams and interfere with nerve transmission to the hands. Interesting Huh?

Bottom Line:  Carpal Tunnel Symptoms are nothing to mess around with. You use your hands for everything. Patients with chronic hand pain are often depressed and have other problems such as sleeping disorders and lowered immune function. It’s a chain reaction that can overwhelm your life.

The good news is that a chiropractor that specializes in CTS can help…and results are usually seen right away.

Sciatica Relief in San Francisco

sciatica relief in SFWe have been providing treatment for Sciatica in San Francisco for over 22 years now.

The majority of the time, sciatica (leg pain) is the result of Pinched Nerves in the low back (lumbar spine). Pinched nerves or nerve roots are mostly caused by herniated or bulging discs.

Pinched lumbar nerves can also be asymptomatic. That’s right, you can have a herniated disc in the lumbar spine and have no symptoms. In fact, unless there is a trauma, herniated discs usually develop over time and the symptoms such as sciatica happen after the problem has been there for a while.

When a chiropractic patient presents with new symptoms of sciatica they have a tendency to think the problem is new…and it is in a way…but the cause has usually been there a while if the cause is a bulging or herniated disc, which it usually is.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that herniated and bulging discs in the low back, and the low back pain and sciatica they cause, respond favorably to gentle chiropractic care.

In the event that sciatica does not respond to chiropractic care we have nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 as a “next step”.

Spinal decompression systems are designed and built to treat lumbar disc herniations, bulging discs, spinal stenosis, facet syndrome, and degenerative disc disease. The DRX9000 is safe, gentle and effective. It’s also painless. Sure, some get sore in the beginning, but that’s how it is with most treatments that are physical in nature.

So there you go. If you are suffering with low back pain or sciatica or both, you may have a herniated disc in the low back.

Your best bet is to find a doctor that treats herniated discs on a regular basis and does so nonsurgically. We are the clinic with the most experience treating herniated discs in SF. We also have a team of medical doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and nutrition experts.

To find out if you are a candidate for Sciatica Relief in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.
