Headaches and Sitting Long Periods

headache relief san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for headaches in San Francisco for over 23 years.

If you are someone that spends the majority of their time sitting at a desk in front of a computer, like most of our patients, you are prone to neck pain and headaches.

The reason for this is that  sitting long periods causes static muscle tension in the neck, back and shoulders. The neck muscles attach to the back of the head. Chronic tension on these muscles can cause pressure and pain in the head as well as neck, upper back, shoulder, arm or hand pain.

We are simply not designed to be sitting at a desk all day and we need to be proactive making sure we are doing things to counteract these negative stresses.

Here is a partial list of things you can do:

  1. Take frequent breaks and stretch and walk around.
  2. Make sure your workstation is ergonomically correct.
  3. Drink lots of water throughout the day.
  4. Eat lots of plant foods (anti-inflammatory).
  5. Get plenty of exercise.
  6. Get a desk that allows you to stand or sit.
  7. Do deep breathing exercises.

There are more but those will do for now. If you already have headaches then you should visit a chiropractor for an assessment. Depending on the type of headache and the nature and severity of your condition you may only need a few visits or you may need more.

The good news is that most headaches respond favorably to chiropractic, especially those related to sitting long periods.

So, prevention is best. But if you do get a headache then see your chiropractor.

If you live or work in San Francisco we have 2 clinics to serve you.

To find out if you are a candidate for headaches treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Headaches That Wont Go Away!

Headaches That Wont Go Away?

We have been providing treatment for headaches in San Francisco since 1992.

One of the most common complaints n a chiropractic office are headaches. Especially, chronic headaches, which are headaches that persist for over 90 days wont go away.

There are many underlying causes of headaches, and fortunately, most respond favorably to chiropractic case management.

During the past 23 years or so we have helped thousands of patients with headaches return to more normal “headache free” active lifestyles. Some were diagnosed with tension headaches, some with migraines, temporal headaches, unilateral headaches, whatever. A diagnosis is just a name…a way to label the symptoms. It’s really just a particular doctors opinion.

In reality, most headache symptoms overlap with each other which makes it very difficult to correctly classify it as one type of headache or the other.

Chiropractors tend to focus more on how to help the headache than how to name it.

Experience tells us the most headaches originate from misalignment’s or pinched nerves in the neck. The causes are usually poor posture or ergonomics,  a bad mattress or pillow, stress,  auto accidents (many left untreated), sports injuries, a short leg, on and on. The cause is usually mechanical.

Sure, there can be serious causes of headaches, but these are usually associated with headaches that are new and acute with sudden onset. These are very rare and involve infections, tumors or fractures.

Sometimes x-ray or MRI is necessary to quantify the problem in the neck.

Chiropractic treatment for headaches (at our clinic) typically consists of chiropractic adjustments, massage, stretching, low tech exercises, posture and ergonomic advice, a cervical pillow, and laser if needed. Visits take about 20-30 minutes. Results are outstanding.

In the event you have a serious headache or there are any “red flags” we have medical doctors at our primary clinic a few blocks away to check you out.

So, if you have headaches that wont go away and would like to be checked to see if you are a candidate for headaches treatment in San Francisco, please call 415-392-2225.

Most insurance accepted. Validated Parking Embarcadero Center.

Neck Pain From Sleeping?

tempurpedic neck pillow

Are You Using a Cervical Pillow?

We have been providing neck pain treatment in San Francisco since 1992.

One of the more common complaints in a chiropractic office is a patient complaining of neck pain from sleeping. More often than not the symptoms are ongoing but this episode is worse than normal. Some patients experience neck and shoulder pain and others headaches as well.

What causes this and what can be done about it?

Well…believe it or not the fix for morning neck pain may be easier than you think.  The first questions your chiropractor will probably ask you (and we ask all of our new patients these two questions) are this:

1. Do you use a cervical pillow when you sleep?

2. Do you sleep on your stomach?

When you sleep on your stomach you need to have your head turned so you can breath…this means you are sleeping with the spine twisted. The spine is also flat when you sleep on your stomach. Twisted and flat is the the worst possible thing for your neck. And even worse…most stomach sleepers have been doing this their entire life.

A cervical pillow is designed and built to support the spine in it’s normal alignment when you are on your back or on your side. These are the only positions you should sleep in. The pillow we prefer is the Tempur-Pedic Neck Pillow, but there are many other excellent pillows out there.

In addition, You may also need a some chiropractic adjustments as well as some home exercises to help restore the curve in your neck that you have most likely lost from years of sleeping on your stomach. Your new pillow will help to restore your neck curve. You should start feeling better right away because chances are the problem has been eliminated, though there can be a break in period for some with the pillow. Stick with it.

Your chiropractor will also show you proper ergonomics techniques as well as stretches you can do at your desk at work to counteract the stresses of sitting for long periods. Poor ergonomics can be a contributing factor to neck pain and headaches.

So there you go. If you have neck pain from sleeping your first stop should be the chiropractor. And if you don’t have a cervical pillow please get one. The best thing to do is to go to a store that has a variety or to a chiropractor that sells them. You will need to be fitted to make sure you get the right size and foam density.

To schedule an appointment with one of our San Francisco Chiropractors please call 415-392-2225. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Headaches From Sitting at the Computer?

headaches relief in san francisco

Headaches Relief in San Francisco

We have been treating headaches in San Francisco for over 23 years.

Headaches are fairly common…especially with people that spend a lot of time on the computer like most of our chiropractic patients in the San Francisco Financial District.

Sitting for long periods in front of a computer can cause static muscle tension in the back, neck and shoulder muscles. Constant tension on the neck and shoulder muscles which attach to the head can cause tension headaches that can become chronic (lasting over 90 days) and debilitating.

Poor ergonomics can also contribute to computer related neck pain and headaches. As can lack of proper (frequent) micro-breaks, which are brief resting periods (typically 1-2 minutes) that allow the muscles to rest and recover.

In addition, you could be compounding the problem by sleeping on your stomach or using a soft pillow. It’s always best to sleep on your back or side with an orthopedic pillow like a Tempur-Pedic Pillow.

If you do get a sore neck at home there are stretches you can do as well as ice techniques to reduce inflammation, pain and muscle spasms.  Your chiropractor is your best resource for these.  You can also search Google or YouTube. If you do a search for the following you can find some videos we have done:

“Neck stretches Executive Express Chiropractic”, “cervical pillow executive express chiropractic”, “how to ice executive express chiropractic”.

Your chiropractor is also an expert on ergonomics as well as natural neck, shoulder, back and headaches treatment. Typically, you can expect to start feeling better right away…although it could take a few weeks.

Our San Francisco headaches treatment consists of chiropractic adjustments, massage, laser, ice, heat, ergonomic instruction, work and home stretches, cervical pillow, and stress reduction techniques. We have affordable cash fees and accept most insurance.

To find out if you are a candidate for headaches relief in San Francisco at our chiropractic clinic please call 415-392-2225.

The True Cause Of Most Headaches

headaches treatment in san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for headaches in San Francisco since 1992.

I know a little bit about headaches. When I was 23 years old and starting my career as a stockbroker I began to experience migraine headaches. They became progressively worse to the point I could no longer function normally. In fact, I became bedridden and developed an allergic reaction to the pain medication Percodan. It was not much fun.

I saw my family doctor, a headaches specialist, neurologist, ear, nose and throat doctor, a brain surgeon and a TMJ specialist. Nothing worked. I had blood tests, hearing tests, brain scans, MRI, cat scans and every test under the sun. At one point I was told to brace for the worst because my headaches had come on suddenly and that was a red flag.

Not once did anyone suggest that the cause could be physical. Not once did anyone mention the NECK as a possible cause or origination point of the headaches?

It wasn’t until one of my clients, a chiropractor, called me at home to see how I was doing. He told me that chiropractors had great success with headaches and that in spite of everything I had been through there wa a very high likelihood he could help. I did not know him that well at the time but I would have tried anything at that point.

Well, he took x-rays of my spine and did an exam. He told me I had pinched nerves in my neck and that this was a primary cause of headaches. I said how come all these medical experts never said anything about this? He said that’s a good question…one I hear every day.

Now this chiropractor was so busy that his waiting room looked like a Greyhound Bus terminal. To me thi could only be possible if he was helping people. So I gave it a shot. I did have a positive experience in high school with a chiropractor when I had suffered an injury to my neck playing football. As it would turn out, this was part of my headaches problem. Previous injuries  can create fertile soil for future problems.

Anyway, after just one visit I could tell I was feeling better. After a few weeks my headaches were almost gone. But get this…I still did not believe the chiropractic got rid of the headaches. I thought it was a coincidence. So as soon as I felt better I stopped.  The headaches came back. Then I thought it didn’t work. I know now this is a typical sequence of events.

In any case, I returned to the chiropractor (who ended up becoming my best friend)with my tail between my legs and finished what I started. I have been headaches free since. Not only that, it was because of this experience that I decided to switch gears and become a chiropractor. I became fascinated with it It was the best decision I have ever made.

My story is not unique…many chiropractors have their personal story of what lead them  into the profession. It’s one of the special bonds chiropractors have with each other.

I have been a chiropractor for over 22 years now and I have personally treated over 10,000 headaches patients. Because of my personal experience I was able to understand what they were going through and effectively treat the overwhelming majority of them.

In my opinion, the true cause of most headaches are misalignments (vertebral subluxations) in the neck. And the best treatment for headaches is chiropractic. And research supports this. Cjeck-out this article on the great chiropractic consumer website Chiro-Trust.org entitled The Neck and Headache Connection.

How Do You Know It’s A Migraine Headache?

Migraine Headaches San Francisco treatment

Treatment for Migraine Headaches San Francisco

We have been providing migraine headaches treatment in San Francisco for 22 years.

There are MANY different types of headaches, of which migraines are a common type. This discussion will concentrate on some unique characteristics that are associated with migraine headaches. This information may help you understand what type of headache you’re having. A unique feature of migraine headaches is that prior to the start of the headache, there is often a pre-headache “warning” that the migraine is about to commence. This is often referred to as an “aura,” and it can vary from a few minutes to a few hours, or in some cases, two days prior to the start of the migraine. Here are some of the more common “warning signs” that you are having, or are about to have, a migraine:

·         Neck pain. In an online survey, the National Headache Foundation found that 38% of migraine patients “always,” and 31% “frequently” had neck pain accompany their migraine headache.

·         Frequent urination. This can precede the migraine by an hour or as much as two days.

·         Yawning. A 2006 article in the journal Cephalgia reported that about 36% of migraine sufferers describe yawning as a common pre-migraine warning. This can occur quite frequently, such as every few minutes.

·         A “sensory aura” may occur on half of the body, moving from the finger tips through the arm, across the face, or elsewhere and usually includes a temporary lack of feeling as if the body region is “half asleep.”

·         Nausea and vomiting. This is a common aura. According to the American Migraine Study II (a mail survey of more than 3,700 migraine patients) 73% reported nausea and 29% vomiting. Another study reported that migraine sufferers who have nausea/vomiting usually have more severe migraine headaches and get less relief from migraine medications compared to those who do not get nausea or vomiting.

·         Other common auras or “sensitivities” during the migraine include bright light, noise, and/or smells (like perfumes), and many migraine sufferers seek refuge in a dark, quiet room and try to sleep.

·         Physical activity. Routine activities such as walking, climbing steps, running, weight lifting, or sexual activity can trigger a migraine and/or increase the intensity of an existing migraine headache.

·         Trouble speaking. Difficulty “getting the words out” or formulating thought (staying on task) can be another warning sign of an impending migraine. Obviously, if this is the first time this symptom has occurred and it’s “…out of the ordinary,” we’ll have to make sure it’s not something more serious (…like a stroke)!

·         Weakness. This may occur in an arm or leg or entire half of the body (left or right side) and also could be a more serious sign of a stroke, but it is also a fairly common pre-migraine aura.

·         Visual aura. This can include double vision and / or vertigo (balance loss with a spinning feeling). This often occurs in a special type of migraine called a “basilar-type migraine” and symptoms can include dizziness, double vision or loss of vision. The balance loss is often associated with a “bad migraine” and occurs when the migraine is stronger or more intense than usual.

·         “Headache hangover.” This usually occurs after the migraine has passed and people describe a feeling of being “wiped out.” Symptoms can include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, weakness, dizziness, lightheadedness, and extreme energy loss.

In many cases, our migraine headaches treatment, consisting primarily of adjustments applied to the neck and upper back, especially when delivered BEFORE the migraine, can reduce the intensity and in some cases STOP the migraine from even starting!

We realize you have a choice in whom you consider for your health care provision and we sincerely appreciate your trust in choosing our service for those needs.  If you, a friend, or family member requires care for headaches, we would be honored to render our services.

Migraines and Pregnancy

Pregnant woman headaches relief SFWe have been providing natural relief for migraines in San Francisco for over 20 years. One of the more common presentations we see are migraines and pregnancy.

There are millions of women who suffer with migraine headaches on a daily basis, and some of them actually experience a reduction in symptoms during pregnancy. In fact, according to the Baby Center, two thirds of women who suffer from headaches feel relief during pregnancy. Then, there are the women that have never had headaches before that begin to have them during pregnancy.

Why is this and what can be done about it?

Well, migraine causes in general can be very complicated and exact causes are not known. Estrogen is thought to play a role in migraines. That’s why pregnancy, menstruation and menopause often change a woman’s pattern of migraine headaches.

In my chiropractic practice I have discovered that many patients that are suffering with migraine headaches have misaligned vertebrae in the neck, some resulting in pinched nerves. By adjusting these vertebrae back into a more normal position we are able to find pain relief when all else has failed.

We incorporate gentle massage to the neck and shoulder muscles as well as ice therapy to reduce inflammation and muscle spasms.

This treatment is very safe, gentle, and effective. Most of the pregnant women with migraines that we see in our clinic wish to avoid medications during pregnancy and chiropractic is 100% natural.

Chiropractic adjustments will also help with the normal overall aches and pains associated with pregnancy. I adjusted my wife every few days until she gave birth to our daughter. She found great relief in this and has since referred many friends, co-workers, and relatives who may be suffering with headaches, neck pain, back pain or overall stress during pregnancy.

I guess from my point of view, I want to focus not so much on all the causes because we just don’t understand them enough…I will let the researchers do that. I want to focus on how to provide pregnant women natural migraine headaches relief, and that we can do very effectively.

To find out if you are a candidate for migraine headaches treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our chiropractors.

Headaches Treatment with Chiropractic

Headaches treatment in san francisco financial districtWe have been providing natural headaches treatment with chiropractic in downtown San Francisco since 1992.

Did you
know that 9 out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches? There are many different
types of headaches with a multitude of symptoms including achy, throbbing,
nausea, vomiting, dizziness, numbness, blinding, noise, light and/or odor
sensitivity, and more. The causes of headaches can include genetics (familial traits
like migraine headaches), stress or tension (probably one of
the most common), environmental (allergies, seasonal, bright sunlight, loud
noises, certain foods), behavioral (insomnia, excessive
exercise, blood sugar problems, depression), and many more.

            Environmental factors can “trigger”
the onset of a headache. About 95% of headache sufferers have “primary
headaches” such as tension, migraine, or cluster headaches. The other 5% may be
caused by other physical conditions or problems and the headache serves as a
“warning sign” that something else is wrong. The “key” in the 5% of potentially
dangerous types of headaches is to pay attention to when there is a rapid onset
(“…it came out of nowhere fast!”), if they are very intense, and are
“different” from other headaches previously suffered. When nervous system
symptoms occur that are unusual for that person, such as lapses in memory, the
person is not responding, rapid onset of dizziness, balance disturbance,  and/or a “blinding sharp pain,” these should
trigger a warning sign that something specific and potentially dangerous may be
causing the headache.

For the main 95% of headaches
sufferers, neck tension is a common complaint with the headache. Research
supports that spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), the primary form of care
utilized by chiropractors, is an effective option for tension headaches. A 2001
Duke University study reported that SMT
resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches originating in the
neck, had fewer side effects, AND longer-lasting relief of tension-type
headaches compared to those receiving commonly prescribed medication. Another
study found that SMT was effective, not only for relieving the headache, but
had a sustained benefit AFTER it was discontinued after a 4-week treatment
period. This was NOT seen in a similar tension-type headache group receiving
prescribed medication treatment only.

Here is how to help yourself:

1.
Improve your posture: Most of us are “chin pokers” and
“slouchers.” The weight of the head pulls on the neck and upper back muscles
and when held in that fixed position while driving, typing, watching TV, the
static muscle tension can create a headache.

2.
Take “mini-breaks” every 30-45 minutes from static fixed
positions and perform some exercises. A good stretch is to reach over to the
opposite side of the head and gently pull to stretch the sides of the neck.
Repetitively, poke and tuck your chin in & out to stretch different muscle
fibers. Then, add flexion, extension and/or rotation to the same movements for
about 10 sec./side. Try it now!

3.
Avoid clenching your teeth and shrugging your shoulders. We do
these things without being conscious that we’re even doing it. Those static
loads play havoc with our neck muscles.

4.    Drink plenty of water – at least 8 oz., 8x/day (more when
exercising or pregnant). If you want to be more accurate, take your current
weight and divide by 2. (Eg., 130# person = 65oz./day; 190# = 95oz./day).

5.
If
you have chronic headaches, COME SEE US!
This is what we do, and it helps A LOT!

We realize that you have a choice in
where you choose your healthcare services.
If you, a friend or family member requires care for headaches, we
sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence shown by choosing our services
and look forward in serving you and your family presently and, in the future.
