Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. Featured in Chiropractic Economics Magazine

chiromedical group chiropractic economics san franciscoChiro-Medical Group, Inc. of San Francisco is on the cover and is the feature story of the June 2014 issue of Chiropractic Economics Magazine.

Late last year Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. (CMG) purchased our clinic, Executive Express Chiropractic at the Embarcadero Center (founded by Dr. Eben Davis). The name of the new clinic is Chiro-Medical Group Express (CMGE).

Chiro-Medical Group is on the move as it expands it’s services and offerings to meet the growing demands of it’s San Francisco Financial District community and patient base. Here is an excerpt from the Chiropractic Economics article:

When Scott Calzaretta, DC, got the idea of providing a multidisciplinary approach to chiropractic care in the heart of San Francisco, he didn’t start close to home. It was during the World Championships of Athletics in Rome in 1987 when he realized how important a team approach to treating athletes can be.

“We were the doctors at the host medical facility, and the three of us (Calzaretta, David Pierson, DC, and Don Oyoa, DC) had the longest line of athletes from all over the world waiting to get adjusted,” Calzaretta says. At the time, he was traveling with the Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS), a group that organizes teams of doctors and other healthcare providers to treat professional athletes at international sporting events. Calzaretta is also a founding board member of FICS; the federation began in 1987.

The federation “always had multidisciplinary teams,” says Calzaretta, who graduated from Life Chiropractic College East (now Life University) in 1985. He says he was impressed at these teams’ ability to address many athletes’ needs quickly and with seamless communication across specialties.

Calzaretta also cites his experience with the team-based approach used at the 24th Olympic Games in 1988. At that time, he and Pierson had befriended the Korean Olympic team doctor, a renowned neurosurgeon who had invited them to join him in treating some of his patients.

“What happened then was incredible,” Calzaretta says. “In those days, they did CT myelograms to evaluate low-back-injured patients. So in the mornings before the Games, we would go to the hospital where (the Korean neurosurgeon) was the head of the neurosurgical department and treat patients. David Pierson and I started treating the patients who were scheduled for surgery, and over the next two weeks we cleared out his (the neurosurgeon’s) entire low-back-patient surgical schedule.

“I wish this was always the case, but during those two weeks, as demonstrated by pre- and post-CT myelograms (they did post-treatment to see what effect we had on the patients’ disc injuries), we reduced multiple disc herniations/protrusions and the patients were no longer candidates for surgery,” he adds. “It was at that moment that we all realized that we should be a team and manage patients together. As an aside, he (the Korean doctor) sent neurosurgeons to our clinic for the next five years to watch what we did, and eventually he added a chiropractor to his staff.”

Calzaretta says he also gained an appreciation for the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach after serving as a consultant at St. Francis Memorial Hospital’s San Francisco Spine Center. That center didn’t practice multidisciplinary medicine, he explains, and after seeing the advantages of such care working with the FICS, “We thought we could have more success with this approach working in a private clinic. At that time, it was easier to set up a multidisciplinary approach in a private clinic.”

Thus was born Chiro-Medical Group. Today, Calzaretta and Taylor Rabbetz, DC, his partner since 2000, treat nearly 1,000 patients a week by providing access to a variety of therapies and treatments designed to optimize their health and well-being. The practice incorporated in 1994.

“The multidisciplinary approach gives patients the best opportunity to have a successful outcome in their care,” Calzaretta says. He has also served as an Olympic team doctor at past Olympic events and was one of the first chiropractors to complete the American College of Sports Medicine Team Physician program.

Sciatica Treatment in San Francisco

spinal decompression SF

Spinal Decompression Therapy SF

We have been providing treatment for Sciatica in San Francisco for over 22 years now.

Recently, Executive Express Chiropractic (EEC) as acquired by Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. Chiro-Medical Group (CMG) is a team of medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, athletic trainers and staff that are highly trained in the area of sports medicine and chronic pain syndromes.

What this means to you is we now have the ability to combine nonsurgical spinal decompression at Executive Express Chiropractic with physical medicine at CMG, which is only a short walk away. Patients are reporting outstanding results so far.

Sciatica, which mean “pain in the leg” is caused primarily by pinched nerves in the low back due to herniated and bulging discs. These conditions tend to be progressive in nature and can become severe and debilitating.

Fortunately, sciatica responds favorably to conservative chiropractic care and exercises most of the time. It just depends on the nature and severity of your condition. In the event chiropractic fails to deliver favorable outcomes with chiropractic we will consider spinal decompression with the DRX9000 as a next step.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated discs, bulging discs, disc degeneration, and facet syndromes, naturally.

The treatment program is around 6-10 weeks depending on the severity of the problem and necessary rehab involved. If you have health insurance they will most likely cover some of the ancillary charges such as exercises, x-rays, medical consultations, blood work, physical therapy and home care supplies.

If you have been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging lumbar disc and are experiencing low back pain or sciatica then we would be glad to meet with you to discuss treatment options.

To find out if you are a candidate for low back pain and sciatica treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and schedule a consultation with one of our back pain doctors.

Chances are…you will be glad you did :-)

Low Back Pain and Sciatica Success Story

Low Back Pain and Sciatica San FranciscoOur San Francisco Chiropractor “Patient of the Week is Jeannine Neal. Jeanine was standing in her kitchen when she suddenly sneezed and
immediately felt excruciating sharp pain feeling in her low back and down her
legs Classic signs of a herniated disc).

She collapsed to the ground and was unable to move for quite
some time.  She went and got a 90 minute massage the next day, which she
thought helped, but when she went to get off the massage table she
suddenly couldn’t move again.  After another 30 minutes of massage to her low back and a
session of acupuncture, she was finally able to make it home that
evening.

After one more session of acupuncture, and only feeling slight
relief in pain, she decided to come to our chiropractor clinic at the Embarcadero Center to see if there was anything we
could do to help.

After just one chiropractic treatment, Jeanine
reported a dramatic decrease in her low back and leg pain.  After her second treatment
she reported being able to perform her regular daily activities again.
After 3 treatments, she was back to walking 3+ miles again!

Jeanine
has been very compliant with her recommended treatment plan, which
helped her to become pain-free and get back to enjoying life in less
than 3 weeks! Way to go Jeanine!

This story is similar to thousands of similar stories that happen around the world each day in chiropractic clinics. If you have been suffering with low back pain and sciatica or know someone that is, you may need a chiropractic adjustment.

San Francisco Chiropractor Health Update

San francisco chiropractor health updateMental Attitude
: Smoking and Anxiety. The belief that smoking relieves stress is pervasive, but likely wrong. Smoking is actually anxiogenic (causes anxiety) and successful quitters usually experience a drop in anxiety. ~British Journal of Psychiatry, January 2013

Health Alert: Stroke! In males and females ages 5-14, the number of ischemic stroke hospitalizations increased 31% and 36%, respectively, from 1994 to 2007. For ages 15-34 the increase was 51% for males and 17% for females. For ages 35-44, the increase was 47% for men and 36% for females. The increase in obesity seems to be the primary cause. ~CDC, February 2011

Diet: How Much Protein? An estimator used for daily protein intake is 0.36 grams per 1 pound of body weight (or .8g/kg). For example, if you weigh 155lbs, you should consume 56 grams per day (155 * .36 = 56 grams/day). Note: If you are overweight to begin with, do not use this estimator for your current body weight because this will calculate a higher protein intake number than you really need.

Exercise: Aerobic or Resistance Training? A study of 234 obese/overweight adults compared the effects of aerobic training (AT), resistance training (RT) and both aerobic training and resistance training (AT/RT). Researches found the participants in the AT/RT group both increased lean mass (muscle) and decreased body fat, while the RT group did not decrease body fat, and the AT group did not increase lean mass. According to Leslie H. Willis, an exercise physiologist at Duke University Medical Center and the study’s lead author, “If increasing muscle mass and strength is a goal, then resistance training is required. However, the majority of Americans could experience health benefits due to weight and fat loss. The best option in that case, given limited time for exercise, is to focus on aerobic training. When you lose fat, it is likely you are losing visceral fat, which is known to be associated with cardiovascular and other health benefits.” ~Journal of Applied Physiology, December 2012

Chiropractic: Pregnancy and Back Pain. 20% of women who suffer from severe back pain during pregnancy refrain from having more children out of fear their severe back pain would recur with another pregnancy. ~Obstetrics & Gynecology, February 1998

Wellness/Prevention: How Are You Doing This Year? Only 8% of people succeed in achieving their top New Year’s Resolution. ~Journal of Clinical Psychology, December 2012

Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain

Neck pain treatment in san francisco, CAWe have been providing treatment for neck pain in San Francisco for over 21 years now. In fact, neck pain is one of the most common conditions we treat. Our chiropractic clinic is located in the SF Financial District so most of our patients spend the majority of their day in front of a computer, mostly in a static position.

This puts tremendous pressure on the structures in the neck such as the cervical spinal joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. What happens is the head has a tendency to move forward towards the computer screen as we do our work. The neck muscles react and adapt and have to work much harder than they should. This forward head posture (FHP) also puts abnormal stresses on the neck bones predisposing them to Vertebral Subluxations, which is the term chiropractors use to describe what we treat.

Subluxations in the neck are a combination of misalignment of the cervical spine, abnormal or restricted cervical motion, cervical muscle spasms, pressure on the cervical nerve roots, and loss of function. There may or may not be neck pain.

Chiropractors can tell if you have subluxations in your neck by checking your posture, your cervical range of motion, your muscle strength of your upper extremities and grip strength, as they are controlled by the nerves in the neck, the reflexes and sensation in the upper extremities, and any tenderness or swelling around the cervical vertebrae.

Once a chiropractor determines you have vertebral subluxations, also referred to as “Pinched Nerves”, they will make a determination of how long the problem has been there so they can grade it. This can be done by taking an x-ray of the neck to check for spinal degeneration, loss of neck curve, thinning of the disc, and anterior weight bearing of the skull on the spine. X-rays are not always necessary but are a very useful tool if indicated.

Chiropractic means “done by hand”. So most chiropractors will use their hands to correct subluxations and all it’s components. This is usually done on a chiropractic table or bench and there are hundreds of variations of this. The object is to re-align the cervical spine, restore neck joint motion, reduce muscle spasm, swelling and inflammation, take the pressure off the spinal nerves, and restore lost function such as lost grip strength.

And yes, of course…if there is neck pain or neck, shoulder, and arm pain or headaches, your chiropractor will want to rid you of this as soon as possible. The good news is…as the cervical subluxation corrects the neck pain subsides.

How long will it take to fix my neck pain?

Well, this depends on how long the problem has been there, your age, your level of spinal degeneration, your adherance to the treatment recommendations, your stress level, your diet, your exercise frequency, your work schedule, etc. Chiropractors take all this into consideration and depending on the chiropractors technique make recommendations that make the most amount of sense for you.

Some chiropractic doctors such as us, incorporate exercises into the treatment process or massage or deep tissue laser…but the main course is always the chiropractic adjustment.

So there you go. Done by hand 100% natural chiropractic for neck pain. It just makes sense.

To schedule an appontment for neck pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.

San Francisco Chiropractor: Weekly Health Update

San francisco chiropractor health updateMental Attitude: Neuroticism and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Many people experience traumatic events (such as the death of a loved one, witnessing violence, or physical assault) but only a small amount develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). A decade long study of 1,000 random residents in southeastern Michigan found those who scored higher on a neuroticism scale (chronic anxiety, depression, and/or a tendency to overreact to everyday challenges and disappointments) were more likely to suffer from PTSD following a traumatic event.
Psychological Medicine, November 2012

Health Alert: High Fructose Corn Syrup and Type-2 Diabetes. Researchers found a 20% higher proportion of the population has diabetes in countries with high use of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), like the United States, compared to countries that do not, like the United Kingdom. The United States has the highest consumption of HFCS at 55 lbs (~25 kg) per year per person. The United Kingdom consumes 1.1 lbs (~.5 kg) per year per person.
Global Public Health, November 2012

Diet: Food Advertising. Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years. Food companies spend $10 billion a year marketing in the United States, and 98% of that is on foods high in fat, sugar, or sodium.
Journal of Pediatrics, November 2012
Exercise: Walk Much? The more moderate physical activity (like brisk walking) you do, the better. Compared to doing nothing at all, seventy five minutes of vigorous walking per week was linked to living an extra 1.8 years. Walking briskly for 450 minutes or more per week was found to provide most people with a 4.5-year longer lifespan. The longer people spent each week being moderately active, the greater their longevity. Heart, November 2012

Chiropractic: Keep Your Disks Healthy. In normal healthy disks, the nerves (sinuvertebral) only sense pain on the periphery or outer regions of the disk. In grossly degenerated disks, nerves may penetrate into the center (nucleus) of the disk and be more vulnerable to degeneration and/or inflammation. Lancet, 1997

Wellness/Prevention: Cell Phone Addiction. Cell phone and instant messaging addictions are driven by materialism and impulsiveness and can be compared to consumption pathologies like compulsive buying and credit card misuse. Cell phones may be used as part of the conspicuous consumption ritual and may also act as a pacifier for the impulsive tendencies of the user. Impulsiveness plays an important role in both behavioral and substance addictions.

San Francisco Chiropractor Review: Back Pain

Elizabeth CarranzaThe Executive Express Chiropractic San Francisco "Patient of the Week" is Elizabeth Carranza. Elizabeth presented to our clinic with chronic back and neck pain that had developed while recovering from a severe ankle fracture and wearing a cast.

The pain Elizabeth was experiencing was affecting her home and work life. When the foot is injured and gait is abnormal it can throw the entire spine and body out of alignment. This can cause symptoms like neck pain, back pain, and even headaches.

Plus, the nerves that exit the spine control all bodily functions, so even symptoms like digestive problems, insomnia, and menstrual cramps can occur in situations like this.

Thankfully, Elizabeth is feeling much better from her chiropractic adjustments and feels things have taken a turn for the better. Elizabeth is working out again, has more energy, is sleeping better, and is more focused.

Elizabeth looks forward to her adjustments and is confident she will be free of back pain soon. Elizabeth loves our walk-in, no wait service and our friendly and competent doctors and staff.
