How Long Do Chiropractic Adjustments Last?

How Long Do Chiropractic Adjustments Last?

How Long Do Chiropractic Adjustments Last?

We have been providing chiropractic care in San Francisco for over 24 years.

Some of the more common questions patients have when they visit a chiropractor for the first time are as follows:

1. How many adjustments do I need?

2. Are adjustments safe?

3. How long will the adjustments last and will I have to keep coming in forever?

Well, these are great questions. After-all, we all like to know what we are getting ourselves into, and nobody likes expensive surprises.

The good news is that chiropractic is not expensive and is covered by most health insurance plans. Chiropractic is also very safe and effective…which is why insurance plans cover it. What dictates how many adjustments a patient needs is the nature of the presenting complaints, whether or not the condition is new and acute or chronic (over 3 months), the patients overall health status, and any complications such as scoliosis or diabetes.

Insurance companies have guidelines based on the above and most doctors adhere to these even for cash patients. The chiropractic technique of your doctor is part of the equation also. Some techniques do more corrective type care which takes longer but is longer lasting. Some do relief care which is just treating the symptom and getting the patient out of pain. This is what most patients want.

How long your chiropractic adjustments last depends on all the above and your adherence to the treatment plan and home care recommendations like stretches and exercises. It also depends on your lifestyle, including your work load, your stress levels, your diet, how much you exercise, hobbies, etc.

Some patients go years without adjustments. Some want them a few times a month. Chiropractic is a tool you can use as needed to help you express your health potential. Once you get the hang of it you figure out what works best for you. You make the choice.

Headaches and Sitting Long Periods

headache relief san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for headaches in San Francisco for over 23 years.

If you are someone that spends the majority of their time sitting at a desk in front of a computer, like most of our patients, you are prone to neck pain and headaches.

The reason for this is that  sitting long periods causes static muscle tension in the neck, back and shoulders. The neck muscles attach to the back of the head. Chronic tension on these muscles can cause pressure and pain in the head as well as neck, upper back, shoulder, arm or hand pain.

We are simply not designed to be sitting at a desk all day and we need to be proactive making sure we are doing things to counteract these negative stresses.

Here is a partial list of things you can do:

  1. Take frequent breaks and stretch and walk around.
  2. Make sure your workstation is ergonomically correct.
  3. Drink lots of water throughout the day.
  4. Eat lots of plant foods (anti-inflammatory).
  5. Get plenty of exercise.
  6. Get a desk that allows you to stand or sit.
  7. Do deep breathing exercises.

There are more but those will do for now. If you already have headaches then you should visit a chiropractor for an assessment. Depending on the type of headache and the nature and severity of your condition you may only need a few visits or you may need more.

The good news is that most headaches respond favorably to chiropractic, especially those related to sitting long periods.

So, prevention is best. But if you do get a headache then see your chiropractor.

If you live or work in San Francisco we have 2 clinics to serve you.

To find out if you are a candidate for headaches treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Hand Numbness and Tingling?

carpal tunnel treatment san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for the neck, shoulders and hands in downtown San Francisco for over 23 years now.

Most of the patients we treat in the SF Financial District spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer doing repetitive motions. This activity can put a lot of stress on the bones of the spine in the neck and well as the muscles, ligaments and tendons of the shoulders, arms and hands.

The nerves that control the arms and hands exit from in between the bones of the spine in the neck. These nerves can become compromised with abnormal wear and tear leading to numbness and tingling in the hands. The problem can be in the neck, shoulders, elbows, or wrists.  All must be checked.

In most cases there is joint dysfunction and muscle imbalances, and even nerve pressure in multiple locations. The good news is that these sorts of problems tend to respond favorably to chiropractic and favorable outcomes are the norm.

The standard treatment for hand pain and numbness at our clinic is chiropractic adjustments to the neck, shoulder, elbow, wrists and fingers, massage or ART, low tech exercises in office and at home, deep tissue laser if needed, and ice or heat. Most cases respond in short order. Chronic long standing cases can take longer to treat.

We also have a team of medical doctors and physical therapists that specialize in sports medicine at our primary clinic, Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. which is a few blocks away from our Embarcadero Center walk-in clinic.

To find out if you are a candidate for hand pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

How Often Should You Get Adjusted?

san francisco chiropractorWe have been providing chiropractic in downtown San Francisco for over 23 years.

During this time we have performed over 250,000 chiropractic adjustments. So, I guess you could say we have some experience in this area. What we have leaned during this time is that chiropractic is a wonderful tool that can be used in a variety of ways to help people function at a higher level. Chiropractic is also gentle and very safe.

Sure, most of our new chiropractic patients come in with specific complaints such as back, neck or hand pain. Or even headaches, TMJ or knee pain. But what they end up discovering is that chiropractic adjustments make everything work better. It’s not uncommon for patients to tell their chiropractor that they sleep better, have more energy, think more clearly, recover from exercise quicker, can walk or run longer, lift more weight, and on and on.

In fact, most report relief from long standing ailments that they did not even think to mention to the chiropractor initially because they were so focused on the chief complaint that brought them in. As a chiropractor, this is one of the things that is so rewarding about what we do. All in all, our days are filled with positive feedback. Sure, we have difficult cases, and every once in a while we just can’t seem to help someone…but this is the exception and not the rule.

In the beginning we see patients more frequently…sometimes 2-3x per week for a few weeks. Then we increase the time in between visits as the patient improves until the patient reaches maximum benefit.  The total visits for a new patient depends on their age, the condition that brought them in, what they do for work, any underlying complications, and adherence to the treatment plan.  I would say this averages out to about 10-12 sessions as a national average.

After this, some patients decide to come in for routine maintenance once a month or whenever they feel the need. Some end up liking what chiropractic does for them so much they come in once a week. Some only come in when they are in crisis…and everything in between.  There is no set formula here. Everyone is different. Chiropractic is a tool and once you experience it you learn how to use it as part of your healthy lifestyle toolbox.

Your chiropractors philosophy and technique also plays into the “how many visits do I need?” equation. Sometime you have to try a few different chiropractors before you find what works best for you.  A personal referral from a good friend is probably the best way to start. This way you know going in what the doctors philosophy and treatment recommendations are like.

All in all, no matter what chiropractor you choose to see, chances are you will be satisfied, as chiropractic has a very high patient satisfaction rate. In fact, Consumer Reports ranks chiropractic #1 for back pain.

If you would like to find out more about chiropractic, there is plenty of information here on this blog. If you would like to make an appointment with one of our San Francisco Chiropractors call 415-392-2225.

Neck Pain Relief in San Francisco

neck pain relief san franciscoWe have been providing neck pain treatment in downtown San Francisco for over 23 years now.

Neck pain is very common in people who spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer doing repetitive motions, which is what most of the work force does in the Financial District.

There are 3 basic types of neck pain:

  1. New and acute neck pain.
  2. Chronic neck pain (over 90 days duration).
  3. Repetitive Stress Injury (builds-up silently over time).

While most of the new patients we  see for neck pain report that their neck pain is new, it turns out that the problem has been building up silently under the surface due to things like poor ergonomics, stress (tenses neck muscles), poor sleeping habits (lack of cervical pillow), inadequate breaks at work (it’s best to take frequent stretch breaks), poor posture.

Sure, you can be using a cervical pillow, taking micro-breaks at work, meditating, and have a perfect workstation set-up and still get neck pain, but the odds are greatly reduced when these things are in place.

So what’s the best treatment for neck pain?

Well, according to research, chiropractic and low tech exercises (the kind chiropractors show you) is much more effective than OTC medications or physical therapy. It’s much more cost effective and takes less time as well. Here is an excerpt from Chiro-Trust.org entitled Chiropractic & Exercise vs. OTC Medication for Neck Pain:

However, this new research clearly supports that seeing a chiropractor and/or engaging in light exercise can bring neck pain relief more effectively than relying on pain medications! Researchers even found that the benefits of chiropractic adjustments were still favored A YEAR LATER when comparing the differences between the spinal manipulation and medication treated groups! Moderate acute neck pain is one of the most frequent complaints prompting appointments at primary care/medical clinics and is estimated to account for millions of doctor visits per year. In some cases, pain and stiffness occurs without a known cause and there is no “standard” medical treatment. Though physical therapy, pain medication, and chiropractic have all been utilized for neck pain, until now no one had compared the benefits of each in a single study.

The study consisted of 272 neck pain subjects split up into three groups: 1) Chiropractic group (approximately 20-minute treatments an average of 15 times); 2) Pain medication group (meds included acetaminophen, and in some cases stronger prescription meds including narcotics and muscle relaxants); 3) Physical Therapy group (consisting of meeting twice and receiving advice and exercise instruction at 5-10 repetitions up to eight times a day).

At the end of three months, the chiropractic and exercise group did significantly better than those who took drugs. Approximately 57% of those receiving chiropractic management and 48% of those who did the exercises reported at least 75% reduction in pain vs. 33% of people in the medication group. A year after the treatment period ended, the numbers decreased to 53% in the chiropractic and exercise groups, compared to 38% in pain medication group. The chiropractic group received the highest scores in patient satisfaction at all time points. An interesting downside noted in the medication study group was that the subjects had to use a progressively greater amount of medication at a progressively increased frequency to manage their pain. Stomach trouble is the most common side effect of NSAIDs (leading to ulcers) as well as liver and kidney problems. Another interesting finding was that the subjects in the medication treated group felt less empowered, less active, and less in control over their own condition compared with those in the other two groups.

Bottom Line:  Your best bet for neck pain relief in San Francisco or anywhere for that matter is chiropractic. Not only can your chiropractor provide your with the low tech exercises that are research proven to reduce neck pain, they can also help you get a cervical pillow, proper ergonomic set-up, and any thing else you may need to help your body adapt to modern day living and working.

How To Prevent Back Pain At The Computer

low back pain treatment in SF

Low Back Pain From Sitting?

We have been providing treatment for back pain in downtown San Francisco for over 23 years.

One of the more common problems patients present with at our chiropractic clinics is back pain from sitting long periods in front of a computer. Some of our patients spend 10-12 hours per day there doing repetitive movements. This is very hard on the back, neck and upper extremities and can often lead to chronic pain and disability.

So what is the best way to prevent back pain from sitting at the computer?

Well, first and foremost you want to think “healthy lifestyle”. That’s right…the same lifestyle choices that keep you strong and healthy will also increase your resistance to injury at your workstation. Here is a partial list of lifestyle choices that matter:

  • Get plenty of sleep. When you are tired and run down you are unable to perform at your best and your immune system is also compromised which predisposes you to sickness and injury.
  • Drink plenty of water. The body is 70% water and constantly needs to be replenished. Water also helps keeps the spinal discs hydrated and healthy.
  • Exercise frequently. Exercise keeps the spine, muscles and joints flexible and healthy which reduces your chances of repetitive stress injuries from sitting long periods.
  • Consume plant foods. That’s right, plant foods are “anti-inflammatory”. The typical American diet is pro-inflammatory and is a primary contributor to back pain.
  • Use a cervical pillow when you sleep as this will help to maintain proper spinal alignment.

In addition, there are some very specific things you can do at work to prevent back pain:

  • Take frequent Micro-breaks. Every 15-30 minutes or so get up and walk around for 1-2 minutes. This is a good time to stretch and drink some water.
  • Stretch throughout the day. Simply go to YouTube and search for stretches you can do at your desk. Then do them. Your chiropractor can also provide you with some handouts. This will go a long way helping to prevent and reduce back and neck pain.
  • Proper ergonomic set-up. Make sure your workstation is set-up properly. A few tweaks here and there can reduce stress on your body that can build-up and lead to injury and back pain.
  • Deep breathing exercises and help relax muscles, clear the mind, and reduce stress.

There you go. You really can work long hours at the computer and live a healthy “back pain free” lifestyle. It just takes a little attention and focus. It’s well worth the effort.

In the event you do develop back pain you should visit your chiropractor.  Some people choose to do this on a regular basis for prevention and maintenance. Others just come in whenever they feel they need a tune-up. Chiropractic is quick, painless, affordable, and effective.

Hand Pain For No Reason?

Hand Pain Treatment in SF

Hand Pain Treatment in San Francisco

We have been treating hand pain in San Francisco for over 22 years.

Every week, many people come to our clinic with hand pain that has no apparent cause. Some say they woke up with it…others say it just came on while they were performing normal work or household duties. For some, the hand pain comes and goes and may be getting progressively worse.

The obvious place to look is the hands themselves. Are they being overworked? This day and age most of us spend a good amount of time sitting at a desk in front of a computer doing repetitive motions with the arms and hands. This alone without adequate breaks or proper ergonomics and posture can lead to hand pain, numbness, tingling, burning and weakness.

There is a not so obvious place to look as well that could well be the primary contributor to your arm or hand pain. The neck or cervical spine. This is where all the nerves that innervate or control the arm and hands (upper extremities) originate  and they are very vulnerable to pressure or interference as they exit the spine.

Some of the conditions in the neck that can pinch the nerves and cause hand pain and related disorders are as follows:

  • Herniated or bulging discs in the neck
  • Facet Syndrome
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Vertebral Subluxation
  • Bone spurs
  • Spinal Stenosis

Here are some of the potential symptoms from these conditions:

  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Arm pain
  • Elbow Pain
  • Hand Pain
  • Numbness and Tingling
  • Weakness of Grip
  • Night Pain

These are also the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). In fact, many patients are misdiagnosed with CTS when the problem is actually in the neck. It’s easy to do since the symptoms are the same. This is why it’s so important to See a doctor who spends the majority of their day managing cases of hand pain and related disorders and knows how to treat them naturally. There are many chiropractors that specialize in this like we do.

The last thing you ant is unnecessary drugs or surgeries.

Patients come to our San Francisco Chiropractic and medical center because they know we are hand pain and carpal tunnel experts. We have medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, trainers, massage therapists, and nurses, that routinely treat hand pain, naturally.

We have two clinics in downtown San Francisco to serve you.

So…if you are suffering with hand pain, numbness, tingling, burning, aching, neck or shoulder pain or night pain, you may want to give us a call.

To schedule an appointment with a hand pain doctor on San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.

Chiropractic and the Office Worker

chiropractor posture san franciscoWe have been providing chiropractic to office workers in the San Francisco Financial District since 1992.

People that spend the majority of their day sitting at a desk in front of a computer expose themselves to a unique set of risk factors. Prior to the technological revolution office workers would be doing a variety of tasks and were not confined to their workstations for hours on end with minimal breaks.

Now it seems staffs have been downsized to increase productivity and those lucky enough to have a job are spending even more time in front of the computer. Some even go home and work more. It’s no wonder there has been an increase in back and neck pain new patients at our clinics of late.

So what can be done to prevent musculoskeletal related  back and neck pain from sitting and working longs hours in front of a computer?

Well, chances are if you have a desk job you will be doing this for many years. This is how you will be putting food on the table. And, it’s also very likely that you spent 15-20 years in school sitting at a desk…and that you started your career with some sort of back or neck pain ailment.

My Advice: Treat your body as if you are a professional athlete and your work is your sport. If you do this you will reduce the odds of work related injuries which can also predispose you to sports injuries and chronic pain syndromes.

One of the primary tools of those in the know, including professional athletes, is chiropractic care. That’s right…most athletes get adjusted on a regular basis to reduce the odds of injury and speed up recovery from the stress and strain of training and performing.

And here’s the deal: You have access to the same chiropractors that the professional athletes use. The same doctors, the same technologies such as deep tissue laser therapy, ultrasound, Graston Techniques, Active Release Techniques (ART), and more. Some chiropractic clinics such as ours are diverse and offer physical therapy and medical care (See our primary San Francisco Chiropractic Center).

Some office workers choose to come in whenever they feel they need a tune-up. Some come in on regular intervals of once per week to once per month. Since chiropractic care is so affordable and does not take a lot of time, it is the perfect tool for busy office workers.

Here are some of the benefits of chiropractic care:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Decrease inflammation and pain
  • Increase resistance to stresses (sitting and computer)
  • Better sleep
  • Better posture
  • Improved Mood

Common conditions office workers present with:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Shoulder, arm and hand pain
  • Headaches
  • Hip, knee, leg and foot pain
  • Vertigo and insomnia

Neck Pain From Sleeping?

tempurpedic neck pillow

Are You Using a Cervical Pillow?

We have been providing neck pain treatment in San Francisco since 1992.

One of the more common complaints in a chiropractic office is a patient complaining of neck pain from sleeping. More often than not the symptoms are ongoing but this episode is worse than normal. Some patients experience neck and shoulder pain and others headaches as well.

What causes this and what can be done about it?

Well…believe it or not the fix for morning neck pain may be easier than you think.  The first questions your chiropractor will probably ask you (and we ask all of our new patients these two questions) are this:

1. Do you use a cervical pillow when you sleep?

2. Do you sleep on your stomach?

When you sleep on your stomach you need to have your head turned so you can breath…this means you are sleeping with the spine twisted. The spine is also flat when you sleep on your stomach. Twisted and flat is the the worst possible thing for your neck. And even worse…most stomach sleepers have been doing this their entire life.

A cervical pillow is designed and built to support the spine in it’s normal alignment when you are on your back or on your side. These are the only positions you should sleep in. The pillow we prefer is the Tempur-Pedic Neck Pillow, but there are many other excellent pillows out there.

In addition, You may also need a some chiropractic adjustments as well as some home exercises to help restore the curve in your neck that you have most likely lost from years of sleeping on your stomach. Your new pillow will help to restore your neck curve. You should start feeling better right away because chances are the problem has been eliminated, though there can be a break in period for some with the pillow. Stick with it.

Your chiropractor will also show you proper ergonomics techniques as well as stretches you can do at your desk at work to counteract the stresses of sitting for long periods. Poor ergonomics can be a contributing factor to neck pain and headaches.

So there you go. If you have neck pain from sleeping your first stop should be the chiropractor. And if you don’t have a cervical pillow please get one. The best thing to do is to go to a store that has a variety or to a chiropractor that sells them. You will need to be fitted to make sure you get the right size and foam density.

To schedule an appointment with one of our San Francisco Chiropractors please call 415-392-2225. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Chiropractic For Shoulder Pain

shoulder pain treatment in SF

Shoulder Pain Treatment with Chiropractic

We have been providing treatment for shoulder pain in San Francisco since 1992.

Shoulder pain is fairly common these days, especially with office workers who spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer doing repetitive motions with the upper extremities.  often times there is associated neck, arm and hand pain.

There are 3 primary causes of shoulder pain:

1. Acute shoulder pain from trauma or injury such as a sports injury or auto accident.

2. Cumulative Trauma Disorder from doing repetitive shoulder and upper extremity movements over time.

3. Chronic shoulder pain, which is pain that persists for over 3 months. It is usually the result of 1 or 2 above,

Unfortunately, a visit to the chiropractor is not high on the list of someone that is experiencing a bout of shoulder pain. Typically, they do nothing or visit a medical doctor. Some sharp medical doctors will refer out for physical therapy or even chiropractic. Many will still prescribe painkillers and muscle relaxers (bad news). Drugs typically only mask the symptoms and do not address the cause.

Over the past 23 years we have treated thousands of cases of shoulder pain at our chiropractic clinic in San Francisco. The treatment methods (depending on the actual problem) we use are as follows:

  • Chiropractic adjustments to the neck, arms and shoulders
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Active Release Techniques (ART)
  • Deep Tissue Laser Therapy
  • Kinesio Tape
  • Graston
  • Electronic Muscle Stimulation
  • Ice and Heat

Depending on whether the case is acute or chronic or cumulative will dictate the actual treatment plan and duration of care. We will usually be able to make our recommendations on the first or second day.

So, if you live or work in the SF Bay Area and have suffered a shoulder injury, we would like to meet with you. We are conveniently located at the Embarcadero Center One in the Financial District and have validated parking.

To schedule an appointment for shoulder pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and mention this blog post.
