Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. Featured in Chiropractic Economics Magazine

chiromedical group chiropractic economics san franciscoChiro-Medical Group, Inc. of San Francisco is on the cover and is the feature story of the June 2014 issue of Chiropractic Economics Magazine.

Late last year Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. (CMG) purchased our clinic, Executive Express Chiropractic at the Embarcadero Center (founded by Dr. Eben Davis). The name of the new clinic is Chiro-Medical Group Express (CMGE).

Chiro-Medical Group is on the move as it expands it’s services and offerings to meet the growing demands of it’s San Francisco Financial District community and patient base. Here is an excerpt from the Chiropractic Economics article:

When Scott Calzaretta, DC, got the idea of providing a multidisciplinary approach to chiropractic care in the heart of San Francisco, he didn’t start close to home. It was during the World Championships of Athletics in Rome in 1987 when he realized how important a team approach to treating athletes can be.

“We were the doctors at the host medical facility, and the three of us (Calzaretta, David Pierson, DC, and Don Oyoa, DC) had the longest line of athletes from all over the world waiting to get adjusted,” Calzaretta says. At the time, he was traveling with the Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS), a group that organizes teams of doctors and other healthcare providers to treat professional athletes at international sporting events. Calzaretta is also a founding board member of FICS; the federation began in 1987.

The federation “always had multidisciplinary teams,” says Calzaretta, who graduated from Life Chiropractic College East (now Life University) in 1985. He says he was impressed at these teams’ ability to address many athletes’ needs quickly and with seamless communication across specialties.

Calzaretta also cites his experience with the team-based approach used at the 24th Olympic Games in 1988. At that time, he and Pierson had befriended the Korean Olympic team doctor, a renowned neurosurgeon who had invited them to join him in treating some of his patients.

“What happened then was incredible,” Calzaretta says. “In those days, they did CT myelograms to evaluate low-back-injured patients. So in the mornings before the Games, we would go to the hospital where (the Korean neurosurgeon) was the head of the neurosurgical department and treat patients. David Pierson and I started treating the patients who were scheduled for surgery, and over the next two weeks we cleared out his (the neurosurgeon’s) entire low-back-patient surgical schedule.

“I wish this was always the case, but during those two weeks, as demonstrated by pre- and post-CT myelograms (they did post-treatment to see what effect we had on the patients’ disc injuries), we reduced multiple disc herniations/protrusions and the patients were no longer candidates for surgery,” he adds. “It was at that moment that we all realized that we should be a team and manage patients together. As an aside, he (the Korean doctor) sent neurosurgeons to our clinic for the next five years to watch what we did, and eventually he added a chiropractor to his staff.”

Calzaretta says he also gained an appreciation for the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach after serving as a consultant at St. Francis Memorial Hospital’s San Francisco Spine Center. That center didn’t practice multidisciplinary medicine, he explains, and after seeing the advantages of such care working with the FICS, “We thought we could have more success with this approach working in a private clinic. At that time, it was easier to set up a multidisciplinary approach in a private clinic.”

Thus was born Chiro-Medical Group. Today, Calzaretta and Taylor Rabbetz, DC, his partner since 2000, treat nearly 1,000 patients a week by providing access to a variety of therapies and treatments designed to optimize their health and well-being. The practice incorporated in 1994.

“The multidisciplinary approach gives patients the best opportunity to have a successful outcome in their care,” Calzaretta says. He has also served as an Olympic team doctor at past Olympic events and was one of the first chiropractors to complete the American College of Sports Medicine Team Physician program.

Sciatica Treatment in San Francisco

spinal decompression SF

Spinal Decompression Therapy SF

We have been providing treatment for Sciatica in San Francisco for over 22 years now.

Recently, Executive Express Chiropractic (EEC) as acquired by Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. Chiro-Medical Group (CMG) is a team of medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, athletic trainers and staff that are highly trained in the area of sports medicine and chronic pain syndromes.

What this means to you is we now have the ability to combine nonsurgical spinal decompression at Executive Express Chiropractic with physical medicine at CMG, which is only a short walk away. Patients are reporting outstanding results so far.

Sciatica, which mean “pain in the leg” is caused primarily by pinched nerves in the low back due to herniated and bulging discs. These conditions tend to be progressive in nature and can become severe and debilitating.

Fortunately, sciatica responds favorably to conservative chiropractic care and exercises most of the time. It just depends on the nature and severity of your condition. In the event chiropractic fails to deliver favorable outcomes with chiropractic we will consider spinal decompression with the DRX9000 as a next step.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated discs, bulging discs, disc degeneration, and facet syndromes, naturally.

The treatment program is around 6-10 weeks depending on the severity of the problem and necessary rehab involved. If you have health insurance they will most likely cover some of the ancillary charges such as exercises, x-rays, medical consultations, blood work, physical therapy and home care supplies.

If you have been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging lumbar disc and are experiencing low back pain or sciatica then we would be glad to meet with you to discuss treatment options.

To find out if you are a candidate for low back pain and sciatica treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and schedule a consultation with one of our back pain doctors.

Chances are…you will be glad you did :-)

What Is Biopuncture?

Biopuncture For Sports Injuries in San Francisco

Biopuncture in San Francisco

Executive Express Chiropractic at the Embarcadero Center was recently acquired by Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. The new name of the clinic is Chiro-Medical Group, Express (CMGE).

In addition to chiropractic care, spinal decompression, and deep tissue laser, CMGE will also be used as an entry point for many advanced sports medicine and chronic pain relief procedures and therapies available at the primary clinic just a short walk away. One of these therapies is called Biopuncture and is performed by Dr. Lee Wolfer, MD.

Here is an excerpt from the Biopuncture page of the Chiro-Medical Group website:

About Biopuncture:

Biopuncture is a therapy whereby specific body locations are injected with biologically active substances which are physiologically regulating. These substances are used to treat pain, swelling, inflammation and toxin accumulation, among other problems. Most injections cause only minor discomfort because they are very shallow, given just under the skin or into the muscle.

What kinds of products are injected?

Products commonly used in Biopuncture are, for example arnica, Echinacea, and chamomile. Arnica is used for muscle pain and Echinacea is used to boost your body’s immune system. Biopuncturists usually inject a mixture of natural products. Traumeel for example is used for inflammation in the setting of sports injuries and inflammation. Zeel is used for chronic joint pain. Spascupreel is used for muscle spasms/cramps. Lymphomyosot is utilized for lymphatic drainage in chronically swollen or congested tissues. These products are combined with a local anesthetic medicine like lidocaine.

Are products safe for me?

The solutions are not in high concentration. They contain diluted products. Therefore, toxic side effects are very unlikely. The medications used in Biopuncture are manufactured by companies that guarantee the production quality of their products. Most of the solutions are made in Germany, under strict quality control regulations. Clinical studies on thousands of patients have confirmed the safety of solutions like Traumeel and Zeel.

How can these dilutions actually have an effect on my body?

The fact that most solutions contain low concentrations of plant extracts is often a reason for conventional physicians to criticize the possible effects of these products. Products used in Biopuncture are not diluted to the extent that the solution contains no active product (as in homeopathy). That’s why we call them “micro-doses.” How does this small dose influence the body? A good example is to think of a tetanus vaccination – only small amounts of the product are necessary to stimulate your immune system (= your defense system) against lockjaw. A few injections can protect your body for several years against this serious disease. Biopuncture injections are not vaccinations of course; however, the mechanism is similar: small doses of the right product can have a strong effect. Biopuncture produces its clinical effects because it stimulates your own immune system and restarts your healing capacity. (The medications used in Biopuncture have no relation whatsoever to the current controversy over childhood immunizations). Go here for full article about Biopuncture in San Francisco

So there you go. Biopuncture is not magic but for difficult to treat musculoskeletal injuries, detoxification, and functional restoration, it just might be a logical treatment option for you.

To find out if you are a candidate for Biopuncture in San Francisco with Dr. Lee Wolfer, MD please call 415-495-2225 and mention this blog post.

Prolotherapy in San Francisco

Prolotherapy Treatment in San Francisco

Prolotherapy And Chiro-Medical Group San Francisco

As you may or may not already know. Executive Express Chiropractic is under new ownership. The name of our new owner is Chiro-Medical Group, Inc.

Chiro-Medical Group (CMG) specializes in sports injuries and chronic pain syndromes and is one of the only multi-disciplinary sports clinics in San Francisco to offer Prolotherapy.

So, What is Prolotherapy (Here is an excerpt from the CMG main website Prolotherapy page-please read entire article for more info):

Prolotherapy involves a series of injections designed to produce inflammation in the injured tissue. To appreciate the value of such a seemingly counterproductive measure, you need to know something about connective tissue and how the body normally repairs it.

When tissues are injured, inflammation is a common natural response. It stimulates substances carried in blood that produce growth factors in the injured area to promote healing. Ligaments, tendons and cartilage have very poor blood supplies, which can result in incomplete healing.

The healing process can also be impeded when injuries are treated with anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen or Naprosyn, or prescribed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Nsaids) to relieve pain and swelling.

Unlike injections of corticosteroids, which also suppress inflammation and provide only temporary relief for a chronic condition, prolotherapy injections given over the course of several months are meant to provide a permanent benefit. In effect, prolotherapy tricks the body into initiating a healing response.

The technique reactivates the healing process by injecting a mildly irritating substance — commonly a somewhat concentrated sugar solution along with the painkiller lidocaine — into the injured area to stimulate a temporary low-grade inflammation. In some cases, growth factors themselves may be injected.

With growth factors in place at the site of inflammation, new tissue is said to be produced that strengthens lax or unstable ligaments and tendons. The technique may even support damaged or degenerated cartilage, which normally does not repair itself, by strengthening the fibrous connective tissues that stabilize the area.

Practitioners cite experiments in laboratory animals that demonstrated tissue growth in ligaments and tendons stimulated by prolotherapy injections. Two animal studies also showed healing of cartilage defects.

Can Prolotherapy Help You?

You may or may not be a candidate for Prolotherapy. The best thing to do if you have been injured and feel you may be a candidate is to come to our clinic for a consultation with Dr. Wolfer, our Harvard trained Physical Medicine doctor. Simply call 415-495-2225.
