The Best Treatment For a Herniated Disc

We have been providing treatment for back and neck pain in San Francisco for over 23 years in the Financial District.

Cervical Disc Treatment in SF

There is a lot of information out there on how to diagnose and treat a herniated disc in the neck or low back. Some of it is good and some not so good. Our recommendations come from almost a quarter century of front line experience.

What most people don’t realize is that a herniated disc is very common. In fact, many people have them and do not even realize it. And when you are diagnosed with a herniated disc it is not the end of the world. And, it does not mean you automatically need back or neck surgery.

Often, a herniated disc will heal on it’s own. It just depends on the nature and severity of the condition and the patients overall health profile. All cases are different.

One thing for sure. Chiropractic adjustments should be considered as the #1 treatment option. This has been proven over and over again. You can find some very good research on this at Chiro-Trust.org.

In the event that chiropractic adjustments fail to deliver favorable outcomes there is a logical “next step”. It’s called nonsurgical spinal decompression. The machine we use is the DRX9000. The DRX9000 is designed and built to treat herniated and bulging discs in the cervical or lumbar spine nonsurgically. It is considered the gold standard for drugless disc treatment. You can find out more at SanFranciscoSpinalDecompression.com.

So, if you have been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc in the neck or low back, what should you do?

Our recommendation is that you find a clinic that has both chiropractic and spinal decompression. We have two clinics in San Francisco that are walking distance apart. Our primary clinic has chiropractic, medical care, physical therapy, and diagnostics. Our satellite clinic at the Embarcadero Center has spinal decompression and chiropractic, as well as laser therapy.

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Spinal Decompression Therapy For Herniated Discs

spinal decompression SF

Spinal Decompression Therapy SF

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 23 years.

Herniated discs in the neck and low back are fairly common. Sometimes a herniated disc will heal on it’s own. Sometimes conventional therapies such as chiropractic or physical therapy will help resolve a herniated disc. Other times nothing seems to help.

The symptoms can vary case to case. The most common symptoms are neck or low back pain, arm or leg pain, numbness, tingling in the extremities, weakness, night pain, carpal tunnel symptoms and even headaches. Everyone presents differently.

Spinal decompression therapy is performed on a machine that is designed and built to treat herniated and bulging discs naturally. The machine we use is the DRX9000.

The DRX9000 works by elongating the spine, enlarging the disc space, re-hydrating the disc, re-positioning the disc into a more normal alignment, strengthening the spinal ligaments, and restoring range of motion to the spine.

The treatment consists of twenty one hour sessions done over the course of 6-12 weeks depending on the case presentation and the patients schedule.

Results are outstanding.

If you have been diagnoses with a cervical or bulging disc herniation or suspect you might have one, we would like to meet with you to discuss your treatment options.

We are the spinal decompression experts in San Francisco and have the most experience…and experience matters.

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2224. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

What’s The Best Treatment For Neck Pain?

neck pain treatment in san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for neck pain in San Francisco for over 22 years now.

Neck pain is very common. About 70% of us will experience neck pain at some point in our lifetime. And once we do, relapses are common. On any given day, millions will be suffering with neck pain.

Chronic neck pain is also very common. Chronic neck pain is neck pain that persists for over 90 days. The #1 risk factor for chronic neck pain is previous neck pain.

So what’s the best treatment for neck pain?

Here is an excerpt from an article I found on the great website Chiro-Trust.org entitled Neck Pain and Chiropractic which gives a pretty good overview of what the current research says:

A recent study on neck pain patients compared the effectiveness of manual therapy performed by a chiropractor, physical therapy performed by a physical therapist (PT), and medical care performed by medical physician (MD). The success rate determined at the seventh week was TWO TIMES BETTER for the manual therapy/chiropractic group (68.3%) compared to the medical care group. Those receiving manual therapy also had fewer absences from work compared to both the medical and PT treated groups. Lastly, both the manual therapy and PT groups used less pain relief medication compared to the medically treated group. Another study looked at the multiple approaches that chiropractors use for treating patients with neck pain to determine the “best” approach a chiropractor can use. They reported 94% had improvement or less neck pain after just one treatment when the mid-back (thoracic spine) was also adjusted. Similarly, after receiving two treatments over a one week time frame, the group receiving midback adjustments (vs. the group who did not) reported lower pain and disability scores. A similar study concluded that the best results occurred when the neck, upper back/lower neck, and mid-back were adjusted. This group, when compared to neck adjustments alone, reported greater reductions in disability scores. Thus, having the cervical spine, upper back, and mid-back all adjusted appears to yield quicker, more satisfying results than neck adjustments alone. Read full article here.

The article goes on to explain how chiropractic adjustments to the neck and upper back, as well as low tech exercises are the best treatment for neck pain…even better than medical treatment and physical therapy.

This should not come as a surprise to most chiropractors. However, when a typical person experiences neck pain,  a chiropractor is not usually the first place they go…but they should. And research supports it.

So there you go. Chiropractic seems to be the best treatment for neck pain. Chiropractic is safe, gentle, and 100% natural. It’s just a smart thing to do :-)

To schedule an appointment for neck pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.

Spinal Decompression in Downtown San Francisco

spinal decompression san francisco

Spinal Decompression Therapy with the DRX9000 in SF.

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in the San Francisco Financial District for over 10 years now.

We were the first to introduce the DRX9000 lumbar decompression machine to San Francisco. A while later we purchased a DRX9000c cervical decompression machine so that we could treat both lumbar and cervical disc bulges and herniations.

During this time we have helped thousands of back and neck pain patients return to more normal active lifestyles. Hundreds have avoided back or neck surgery.

Low back pain and sciatica is the most common presentation of a lumbar disc herniation. Often times there just are not many treatment options. Most of the patients that seek us out for spinal decompression therapy have tried many forms of treatment with little to no success.

A typical herniated disc patient will have tried pain pills, muscle relaxers, cortisone, physical therapy, and maybe even acupuncture and chiropractic. Sometimes nothing seems to help. This is when many consider back or neck surgery.

Fortunately, there is a wealth of information online about the DRX9000 and the DRX9000c and those that do their homework are able to discover clinics such as our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center.

Spinal decompression machines are designed and built to treat neurovascular compression syndromes such as bulging and herniated cervical and lumbar spinal discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, Facet Syndrome and even failed back surgery.

Disc decompression therapy elongates the spine, enlarges the disc space, strengthens the spinal muscles and ligaments, re-positions and re-hydrates the injured spinal disc and restores lost motion and function.

Spinal decompression machines are like respirators for the spinal disc. They help the disc to do what they would do if they could…until they can.

Does spinal decompression heal every single herniated disc patient?

NO…just most of them.

How do I know if I am a good candidate for spinal decompression?

You need to find a local doctor that has a spinal decompression machine and have a decompression evaluation and assessment. If you have x-rays or MRI bring them along with you to the apt.

If you want to find out if you are a candidate for lumbar or cervical spinal decompression at our SF Financial District clinic then you need to contact us.

Call our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Clinic at 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Cervical Decompression for Arm and Hand Pain

cervical decompression san francisco drx9000c

Cervical Decompression with the DRX9000c

We have been providing cervical spinal decompression treatment in San Francisco for over 10 years now. The machine we use is the DRX9000c.

The DRX9000c cervical decompression system treats bulging and herniated discs in the neck which are a primary cause of arm and hand pain.

The nerves that exit from the neck travel down the arm and into the hand. When these nerves become pinched from herniated or bulging cervical discs it can cause neck pain, shoulder pain, arm and hand pain, weakness of grip, numbness, tingling, even night pain.

Because these symptoms mimic those of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), herniated discs in the neck are often misdiagnosed as CTS. In fact, sometimes carpal tunnel surgery is even performed (even though the cause is in the neck)…if you can believe that.

Once it is determined that the underlying cause of a patients arm and hand pain is a herniated or bulging disc (by MRI) we will first attempt to help with conservative treatments such as chiropractic, massage, and physical therapy. In the event these treatments fail to deliver results we may recommend cervical decompression with the DRX9000c.

The DRX9000c is designed and built to treat herniated discs in the neck without surgery. Sometimes a combination of decompression, chiropractic and exercise works best. If we need the help of a medical doctor we have them as part of our team also.

To find out if you are a candidate for arm and hand pain treatment with cervical decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. We are in network for most insurance carriers. We also have validated parking at the Embarcadero Center where we are located.

Cervical Disc Treatment in San Francisco

cervical disc treatment SF

Cervical Disc Treatment in San Francisco, CA 94111

We have been providing cervical disc treatment in San Francisco for over 22 years now in the Financial District.

Cervical Disc Treatment has evolved over the years to the point where neck surgery is not the primary option. Nonsurgical options for cervical disc treatment such as chiropractic, physical therapy, and now nonsurgical spinal decompression are mostly successful when it comes to herniated disc treatment.

For our first 10 years in practice we would use a combination of chiropractic, massage, exercise, and traction to treat herniated discs in the neck. About 10 years ago we began to incorporate cervical spinal decompression with the DRX9000c into our treatment protocols. The results have been outstanding.

Cervical decompression systems such as the DRX9000c are designed and built to treat cervical disc herniations non-surgically. The do this by isolating on a specific herniated disc, say at C6-7 and doing the following:

  • Enlarging the disc space.
  • Elongating the spine.
  • Strengthening the spinal muscles, ligaments and tendons.
  • Re-positioning the injured cervical disc away from the nerves and spinal cord.
  • Re-hydrating the cervical disc.

What this means is that cervical disc treatment with spinal decompression is often able to help disc patients avoid risky neck surgeries. And the results for the most part are permanent but may require ongoing maintenance.

To find out if you are a candidate for 100% natural cervical disc treatment in San Francisco with chiropractic or spinal decompression, please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Neck Pain Treatment with Chiropractic

neck pain treatment in san francisco

Neck Pain Treatment & Chiropractic

We have been providing neck pain treatment in San Francisco for over 20 years.

Neck pain represents a major problem for people throughout the world with considerable negative impact on individuals, families, communities, health care systems, and businesses. Up to 70% of the general population will have neck pain at some point in their life. Recovery within the year from neck pain ranges between 33% and 65%, AND relapses are common throughout the life time of the neck pain patient. Generally, neck pain is more common in women, higher in high-income countries, and higher in urban regions. The greatest risk of developing neck pain occurs between 35 and 49 years of age. Since neck pain, very similar to low back pain, is very common and likely to recur over and over again, the question is, what is the best course of action regarding neck pain treatment?

Thus, having the cervical spine, upper back, and mid-back all adjusted appears to yield quicker, more satisfying results than just neck pain treatment (adjustments) alone.

What about the role of exercise in the management of neck pain patients? In November 2012, a systematic review of manual therapies for nonspecific neck pain reported that the addition of neck exercises to a treatment plan provided more benefits than spinal manipulation alone. Similarly, in September 2012 (The Annals of Internal Medicine), chiropractic adjustments were compared against exercise and pain medication treatment groups involving 272 patients tracked over a one-year time frame after a 12-week treatment. Both the chiropractic and exercise groups experienced the most significant pain reduction when compared to the medication treated group with more than double the likelihood of complete pain relief. The chiropractic and exercise groups also had the best short and long term results, but ONLY the chiropractic group found the benefits to last a year or more. The authors (Bronfort, et. al) reported the success of chiropractic treatment stems from its ability to address the CAUSE of the problem rather than simply addressing the symptoms!

We realize that you have a choice in where you choose your healthcare services.  If you, a friend or family member requires care for neck pain, we sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence shown by choosing our services and look forward in serving you and your family both presently and in the future.

Our chiropractors adjust the full spine in most neck pain cases and provide onsite and home exercises for the neck, back and extremities. To schedule an appointment for neck pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.

Pinched Nerve in the Neck?

DRXC spinal decompression SFWe have been providing neck pain relief in San Francisco since 1992.

One of the most common causes of neck, shoulder, arm, and hand pain is a “pinched nerve in the neck”. A pinched nerve is medical terminology (formerly doctor slang) for pressure on a nerve or nerve compression.

Here is how the Mayo Clinic defines a Pinched Nerve:

A pinched nerve occurs when too much pressure is applied to a nerve by
surrounding tissues — such as bones, cartilage, muscles or tendons. This
pressure disrupts the nerve’s function, causing pain, tingling,
numbness or weakness.

A pinched nerve can occur at several sites in your body. A herniated
disk in your lower spine, for example, may put pressure on a nerve root,
causing pain that radiates down the back of your leg (sciatica).
Likewise, a pinched nerve in your wrist can lead to pain and numbness in
your hand and fingers (carpal tunnel syndrome).

Me: A pinched nerve in the neck is usually the result of a herniated or bulging cervical disc, vertebral subluxation (misalignment), degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, or moderate to severe sprain/strain from say a whiplash or sports injury (think football). This can happen all at once from a trauma or slowly over time from sitting in an awkward position at your workstation, poor sleeping habits (flat pillow with no support), or hobby’s like bowling, playing a musical instrument, knitting, or gardening.

These days, just about everyone spends a lot of time on the computer. Our chiropractic clinic is located in the SF Financial District so almost all our patients sit at a desk for very long hours performing repetitive tasks with the upper extremities on the computer. Many then go home and do more of the same. And a very high percentage of these people already had misalignments in the neck from years of school, studying, sports and life. The stress of working at the computer all day is just another layer of the onion that can accelerate the degnerative process and lead to pinched cervical nerves.

So, what can be done to prevent pinched nerves from happening and what is the best treatment once they do happen?

Well, I am a chiropractor, and I specialize in the treatment of neck, arm, and hand pain. So my opinion is biased owards chiropractic care and nonsurgical spinal decompression. Of course, most of the patients I treat are already experiencing pain and dysfunction. So, our primary focus is to treat the problem and get some relief. We do this using a combination of chiropractic adjustments to the neck, shoulder, arms and hands. We incorporate massage and stretching into the mix, as well as custom low tech exercises. If needed, we use deep tissue laser therapy to reduce inflammation and pain levels.

If a pinched nerve is due to a herniated or bulging disc and the patient does not respond to conventional chiropractic as described above than we will consider cervical spinal decompression with the DRX9000c. The DRX9000c is designed and built to treat cervical disc herniations naturally.

Sometimes we use a combination of everything we have to achieve favorable outcomes. Our 20years+ experience comes in handy when it comes to making decisions on pinched nerve treatment.

Along side the treatment we teach our patients how to prevent what we treat by making better lifestyle choices. Education on things like ergonomics, sleeping postures, nutrition, supplements, exercise/stretching, meditation and relaxation techniques are some of the things we weave into the treatment process.

If you would like to find out if you are a candidate for treatment at our San Francisco Chiropractic Clinic please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.

Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain

Neck pain treatment in san francisco, CAWe have been providing treatment for neck pain in San Francisco for over 21 years now. In fact, neck pain is one of the most common conditions we treat. Our chiropractic clinic is located in the SF Financial District so most of our patients spend the majority of their day in front of a computer, mostly in a static position.

This puts tremendous pressure on the structures in the neck such as the cervical spinal joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. What happens is the head has a tendency to move forward towards the computer screen as we do our work. The neck muscles react and adapt and have to work much harder than they should. This forward head posture (FHP) also puts abnormal stresses on the neck bones predisposing them to Vertebral Subluxations, which is the term chiropractors use to describe what we treat.

Subluxations in the neck are a combination of misalignment of the cervical spine, abnormal or restricted cervical motion, cervical muscle spasms, pressure on the cervical nerve roots, and loss of function. There may or may not be neck pain.

Chiropractors can tell if you have subluxations in your neck by checking your posture, your cervical range of motion, your muscle strength of your upper extremities and grip strength, as they are controlled by the nerves in the neck, the reflexes and sensation in the upper extremities, and any tenderness or swelling around the cervical vertebrae.

Once a chiropractor determines you have vertebral subluxations, also referred to as “Pinched Nerves”, they will make a determination of how long the problem has been there so they can grade it. This can be done by taking an x-ray of the neck to check for spinal degeneration, loss of neck curve, thinning of the disc, and anterior weight bearing of the skull on the spine. X-rays are not always necessary but are a very useful tool if indicated.

Chiropractic means “done by hand”. So most chiropractors will use their hands to correct subluxations and all it’s components. This is usually done on a chiropractic table or bench and there are hundreds of variations of this. The object is to re-align the cervical spine, restore neck joint motion, reduce muscle spasm, swelling and inflammation, take the pressure off the spinal nerves, and restore lost function such as lost grip strength.

And yes, of course…if there is neck pain or neck, shoulder, and arm pain or headaches, your chiropractor will want to rid you of this as soon as possible. The good news is…as the cervical subluxation corrects the neck pain subsides.

How long will it take to fix my neck pain?

Well, this depends on how long the problem has been there, your age, your level of spinal degeneration, your adherance to the treatment recommendations, your stress level, your diet, your exercise frequency, your work schedule, etc. Chiropractors take all this into consideration and depending on the chiropractors technique make recommendations that make the most amount of sense for you.

Some chiropractic doctors such as us, incorporate exercises into the treatment process or massage or deep tissue laser…but the main course is always the chiropractic adjustment.

So there you go. Done by hand 100% natural chiropractic for neck pain. It just makes sense.

To schedule an appontment for neck pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.

Hand Pain and the Role of the Neck

Hand pain doctors san francisco 94111We have been providing treatment for hand pain in San Francisco for over 20 years now. During this time we have learned much about the role of the neck when it comes to hand pain and carpal tunnel symptoms.

After-all, the nerves that innervate and control the shoulder, arm, wrist and hand, originate in the neck. The neck is the source of power, energy and life for the upper extremity.

If we were to cut-off the nerve supply from the neck to the hands, the hands would die. If there is diminished nerve supply the hands will malfunction and symptoms will manifest. In order for the hands to function at 100%, they need 100% nerve power. Some of the signs and symptoms of nerve pressure in the neck are as follows:

1. Neck Pain

2. Shoulder, Arm, and Elbow Pain

3. Wrist and Hand Pain

4. Numbness and Tingling in the Arms and Hands

5. Weakness of Grip

6. Night Pain

These are also the classic signs and symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Yes, the same symptoms result from nerve interference between the neck and had as true CTS, which is the result of pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. This is because the median nerve originates in the neck.

Interesting Huh? This is why it is SO important for a doctor to check you from the neck to the fingertips when you have hand pain or any of the other carpal tunnel SYMPTOMS.

There is a subset of chiropractors like us that specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of neck, arm and hand pain. Chiropractic upper extremity experts will incorporate tools such as deep tissue laser therapy, Graston Technique, ART, and upper extremity adjustments, in addition to cervical spine adjustments to remove nerve pressure from the neck to the hands.

Sometimes hand pain will resolve quickly…sometimes it takes a while. It just depends how long your condition has been there and the extent of the damage. One thing for sure…taking pain pills, anti-inflammatory medication such as cortisone injections, and wearing wrist splints, is not going to do much for you if the problem is nerve pressure in the neck from subluxations, bulging or herniated discs, disc degeneration, or muscle spasms.

Physical pressure on nerves (to the hand) requires the removal of the pressure on the nerves or the carpal tunnel symptoms will persist.

If you need help finding a carpal tunnel doctor in your area you can send me an email at ebendavis@yahoo.com and I will try to find a doctor I have trained in your area.
