The Best Treatment For a Herniated Disc

We have been providing treatment for back and neck pain in San Francisco for over 23 years in the Financial District.

Cervical Disc Treatment in SF

There is a lot of information out there on how to diagnose and treat a herniated disc in the neck or low back. Some of it is good and some not so good. Our recommendations come from almost a quarter century of front line experience.

What most people don’t realize is that a herniated disc is very common. In fact, many people have them and do not even realize it. And when you are diagnosed with a herniated disc it is not the end of the world. And, it does not mean you automatically need back or neck surgery.

Often, a herniated disc will heal on it’s own. It just depends on the nature and severity of the condition and the patients overall health profile. All cases are different.

One thing for sure. Chiropractic adjustments should be considered as the #1 treatment option. This has been proven over and over again. You can find some very good research on this at Chiro-Trust.org.

In the event that chiropractic adjustments fail to deliver favorable outcomes there is a logical “next step”. It’s called nonsurgical spinal decompression. The machine we use is the DRX9000. The DRX9000 is designed and built to treat herniated and bulging discs in the cervical or lumbar spine nonsurgically. It is considered the gold standard for drugless disc treatment. You can find out more at SanFranciscoSpinalDecompression.com.

So, if you have been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc in the neck or low back, what should you do?

Our recommendation is that you find a clinic that has both chiropractic and spinal decompression. We have two clinics in San Francisco that are walking distance apart. Our primary clinic has chiropractic, medical care, physical therapy, and diagnostics. Our satellite clinic at the Embarcadero Center has spinal decompression and chiropractic, as well as laser therapy.

To find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Chiropractic and Physical Therapy

physical therapy in san francisco

Chiropractic and Physical Therapy in San Francisco

We have been providing chiropractic and physical therapy in San Francisco for over 23 years now.

Chiropractic and physical therapy (PT) go hand in hand. They are both natural treatments that seek to restore lost health and function without drugs or surgery.

We have found that the combination of chiropractic and PT can make the difference between success or failure in certain cases.  Sometimes chiropractic is not enough, and sometimes PT is not enough. Having a fully equipped PT dept. with a team of highly trained therapists enables us to treat the most challenging injuries and improve outcomes.  We also have medical doctors on staff at our primary clinic.

Recently, our main chiropractic clinic in downtown San Francisco, Chiro-Medical Group, Inc. (CMG), acquired Executive Express Chiropractic at the Embarcadero Center.  The new name is Chiro-Medical Group Express (CMGE). CMGE is just a few short blocks away from CMG and caters to the busy executive who wants to walk in and be seen right away. It is also a portal of entry to the main clinic where more services and diagnostics are available.

The PT and chiropractic combo is especially useful when it comes to sports injuries or auto accidents. Aligning the spine is great, but if there are injuries that require rehabilitation then PT is probably a good idea as well.

When you rehabilitate an injured body part properly you increase the odds of a long lasting permanent solution. The Chiropractic and PT combo should be considered f this is your goal. Chiropractic is great for maintenance care as are exercises that your PT will prescribe. Maintenance care will reduce the odds of re-injury and increase the odds of long term success.

To schedule an appointment for physical therapy and chiropractic in San Francisco please call 415-495-2225. Most insurance accepted.

How To Prevent Back Pain At The Computer

low back pain treatment in SF

Low Back Pain From Sitting?

We have been providing treatment for back pain in downtown San Francisco for over 23 years.

One of the more common problems patients present with at our chiropractic clinics is back pain from sitting long periods in front of a computer. Some of our patients spend 10-12 hours per day there doing repetitive movements. This is very hard on the back, neck and upper extremities and can often lead to chronic pain and disability.

So what is the best way to prevent back pain from sitting at the computer?

Well, first and foremost you want to think “healthy lifestyle”. That’s right…the same lifestyle choices that keep you strong and healthy will also increase your resistance to injury at your workstation. Here is a partial list of lifestyle choices that matter:

  • Get plenty of sleep. When you are tired and run down you are unable to perform at your best and your immune system is also compromised which predisposes you to sickness and injury.
  • Drink plenty of water. The body is 70% water and constantly needs to be replenished. Water also helps keeps the spinal discs hydrated and healthy.
  • Exercise frequently. Exercise keeps the spine, muscles and joints flexible and healthy which reduces your chances of repetitive stress injuries from sitting long periods.
  • Consume plant foods. That’s right, plant foods are “anti-inflammatory”. The typical American diet is pro-inflammatory and is a primary contributor to back pain.
  • Use a cervical pillow when you sleep as this will help to maintain proper spinal alignment.

In addition, there are some very specific things you can do at work to prevent back pain:

  • Take frequent Micro-breaks. Every 15-30 minutes or so get up and walk around for 1-2 minutes. This is a good time to stretch and drink some water.
  • Stretch throughout the day. Simply go to YouTube and search for stretches you can do at your desk. Then do them. Your chiropractor can also provide you with some handouts. This will go a long way helping to prevent and reduce back and neck pain.
  • Proper ergonomic set-up. Make sure your workstation is set-up properly. A few tweaks here and there can reduce stress on your body that can build-up and lead to injury and back pain.
  • Deep breathing exercises and help relax muscles, clear the mind, and reduce stress.

There you go. You really can work long hours at the computer and live a healthy “back pain free” lifestyle. It just takes a little attention and focus. It’s well worth the effort.

In the event you do develop back pain you should visit your chiropractor.  Some people choose to do this on a regular basis for prevention and maintenance. Others just come in whenever they feel they need a tune-up. Chiropractic is quick, painless, affordable, and effective.

To schedule an appointment with one of our San Francisco Chiropractors call 415-392-2225.

Low Back Pain Treatment Options

low back pain treatment in san francisco

Low Back Pain Treatment in San Francisco, CA

We have been treating low back pain in San Francisco since 1992.

Low back pain is very common. In fact, over 80% of us will experience low back pain at some point in our life. Many of us will go on to suffer with chronic back pain, which is back pain that persists for for 90 days.  The #1 predisposing factor for chronic back pain is previous back pain.

So what causes low back pain?

Low back pain can often appear to arise out of the blue for no apparent reason. However, as back pain specialists we know that there is a cause for every effect, and an effect for every cause. We also know that low back pain can work in very mysterious ways and a correct diagnosis can often be challenging.

Here are some common low back pain causes:

  • Obesity or carrying too much weight can put stress on the spine, spinal discs, muscles, ligaments and tendons leading to spine and disc degeneration and herniated and bulging discs.
  • Poor Ergonomics at work or at home can create abnormal stress on the spine.
  • Sleeping on your stomach can cause spinal distortion which leads to chronic neck and back pain as well as poor posture and headaches.
  • Sports injuries.
  • Auto Accidents.
  • Poor Posture.
  • Stress and lack of sleep can predispose the spine to injury from normal home and work activities.
  • Congenital spinal disorders which may be undetected.
  • Sprains and Sprains from slips and falls.
  • Psychological problems often manifest as back pain and must be considered.
  • And more.

Since back pain is so common and there are many varieties of it, it is important to know the best course of action if you happen to get it.

We recommend that use a cervical pillow when they sleep with another pillow under their knees (when on their back). When you are on your side you would put the pillow between your knees. We like the Tempur-Pedic Pillows.

Here is a To-Do List of things to prevent low back pain:

  • Drink lots of water as it hydrates the spinal discs.
  • Stretch frequently.
  • Take lots of breaks at work and walk around (and stretch).
  • Use a cervical pillow.
  • Maintain proper body-weight.
  • Exercise frequently.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Relax and meditate.
  • Eat a plant based diet or lots of fruits and vegetables (anti-inflammatory).

If you do happen to suffer with back pain then you should consider seeing a chiropractor. Chiropractors are lifestyle experts that can not only help you with all of the above, but can also help adjust spinal misalignment’s that may have resulted from things being out of balance or injury.

Here are some of the ways a chiropractor can help your low back pain:

  • Spinal adjustments.
  • Extremity adjustments.
  • Massage.
  • Laser.
  • Exercises.
  • Ergonomic instruction.
  • Cervical Pillow fitting.
  • Lifestyle Coaching.

Some chiropractors such as us also have medical doctors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and advanced diagnostic equipment to assist you even further.

It may be a good idea to incorporate regular chiropractic adjustments into your health regimen to prevent low back pain…especially if you have a history of it. This is what many famous athletes and performers do. And the thing is…it’s not expensive and you have access to the same chiropractors.

To find out if you are a candidate for low back pain treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225.

We have to Financial District locations to serve you and they are within walking distance of each other. Here is a link to our primary clinic Chiro-Medical Group, Inc.

Chiropractic and the Office Worker

chiropractor posture san franciscoWe have been providing chiropractic to office workers in the San Francisco Financial District since 1992.

People that spend the majority of their day sitting at a desk in front of a computer expose themselves to a unique set of risk factors. Prior to the technological revolution office workers would be doing a variety of tasks and were not confined to their workstations for hours on end with minimal breaks.

Now it seems staffs have been downsized to increase productivity and those lucky enough to have a job are spending even more time in front of the computer. Some even go home and work more. It’s no wonder there has been an increase in back and neck pain new patients at our clinics of late.

So what can be done to prevent musculoskeletal related  back and neck pain from sitting and working longs hours in front of a computer?

Well, chances are if you have a desk job you will be doing this for many years. This is how you will be putting food on the table. And, it’s also very likely that you spent 15-20 years in school sitting at a desk…and that you started your career with some sort of back or neck pain ailment.

My Advice: Treat your body as if you are a professional athlete and your work is your sport. If you do this you will reduce the odds of work related injuries which can also predispose you to sports injuries and chronic pain syndromes.

One of the primary tools of those in the know, including professional athletes, is chiropractic care. That’s right…most athletes get adjusted on a regular basis to reduce the odds of injury and speed up recovery from the stress and strain of training and performing.

And here’s the deal: You have access to the same chiropractors that the professional athletes use. The same doctors, the same technologies such as deep tissue laser therapy, ultrasound, Graston Techniques, Active Release Techniques (ART), and more. Some chiropractic clinics such as ours are diverse and offer physical therapy and medical care (See our primary San Francisco Chiropractic Center).

Some office workers choose to come in whenever they feel they need a tune-up. Some come in on regular intervals of once per week to once per month. Since chiropractic care is so affordable and does not take a lot of time, it is the perfect tool for busy office workers.

Here are some of the benefits of chiropractic care:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Decrease inflammation and pain
  • Increase resistance to stresses (sitting and computer)
  • Better sleep
  • Better posture
  • Improved Mood

Common conditions office workers present with:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Shoulder, arm and hand pain
  • Headaches
  • Hip, knee, leg and foot pain
  • Vertigo and insomnia

Walk-In Chiropractic Downtown San Francisco

walk in chiropractor SFWe have been providing chiropractic in the San Francisco Financial District for over 22 years. We are located at the Embarcadero Center One with Validated Parking.

We have learned over the years that busy SF Office workers and city dwellers…and travelers, prefer the convenience of walk-in chiropractic service. After-all…time is money, right?

We have also learned that our patients do not have much tolerance for long ait times…so we have eliminated those also. We are also open 4 days per wee…Monday through Friday from 9-6pm. No complicated, hard to remember clinic hours here.

We also keep it simple when it comes to the chiropractic treatment itself. No long term treatment plans. Most of our patients pay by the visitor if they have insurance (and we are on most plans) it’s just a co-payment.

So, when neck pain, back pain, hand pain, or a headache strikes, no need to call…just come on down. You will never wait more than a few minutes for your adjustment and you will not get trapped either. A typical office visit which includes a short stretch and warm-up massage is less than 25 minutes from start to finish. We even have an “Express” visit if you are in a hurry an just want an adjustment.

Some of the more common conditions we treat are as follows:

  • Back and Neck Pain
  • Arm and Leg Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Whiplash
  • Herniated and Bulging Discs
  • Sports Injuries

Our main clinic which offers medical care, physical therapy, performance training, and specialised sports medicine is just a few blocks away in the event you need more than express chiropractic.

To find out more about our San Francisco Walk-In Chiropractic Clinic check-out our website or call 415-392-2225.

mike pound meb keflezighi SF

Executive Express Chiropractic’s Dr. Mike Pound and Olympic Silver Medal Winner Meb Keflezighi in for a tune-up!

We have been providing chiropractic treatment for Runners in San Francisco for over 22 years.

The physical demands on the body of the long distance runner are intense. There are so many things that need to be right, and at the top of the list is spinal alignment and the alignment of the pedal foundation, leg lengths and the human frame.

Just about all professional, collegiate, and amateur (competition) runners these days include chiropractic adjustments as part of their regimen for staying healthy and preparing for and recovering from races.

Meb Keflezighi is an Olympic Silver medalist who makes sure to get adjusted frequently to stay in top form.

There are many types of running injuries, from shin splints, to ankle sprains, to knee problems, hip issues, Plantar Fasciitis, Turf Toe type problems and on and on.

In addition, many runners often develop low back and neck pain because of poor bio-mechanics or overuse syndromes.

The modern sports chiropractor will have at their disposal many new technologies such as deep tissue laser therapy, rock tape, custom foot orthotics, electronic gait testing, and Active Release Techniques (ART) to name a few.  Most proficient sports chiropractors are able to adjust the extremities including the feet, knees, and hips as well as the spine.

Now,  not all sports chiropractors are equal. Many chiropractors in San Francisco can treat some sports injuries. But if you are an elite athlete and a long distance runner, you want to visit a clinic that specializes in treating sports injuries like we do.

Back Pain Treatment with Spinal Decompression in San Francisco

spinal decompression SF

Spinal Decompression Therapy SF

We have been providing treatment for back pain in downtown San Francisco for over 22 years now.

About 10 years ago we began to include nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into the mix. The results have been outstanding.

Spinal decompression can help avoid surgery by repairing herniated and lumbar disc naturally. This is possible because decompression systems are designed and built to elongate the spine, enlarge the disc spaces and re-position the injured spinal disc into a more normal position away from the spinal nerve roots and spinal cord.

Decompression therapy is NOT  “magic bullet”. In fact, it takes quite a bit of effort by both the patient and doctor to achieve a favorable outcome.

Te typical course of spinal decompression therapy is 20 sessions over a 6 week period. There is extensive home care, dietary recommendations, and lifestyle modifications. The patients that do the most achieve the best results.

Disc decompression to the lumbar spine for the most part is painless and a majority of our patients actually fall asleep during treatments. Sometimes there can be soreness and if there is it is usually bearable and not extreme. Though moderate to sever discomfort is possible…just not likely.

To find out if you are a candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation and tour of the DRX9000.

Whiplash Treatment With Chiropractic

whiplash treatment downtown SF

Whiplash Treatment in San Francisco

We have been providing treatment for whiplash in San Francisco for over 22 years.

With the rainy season upon us the roads will be much more slick leading to more auto accidents and whiplash injuries.  Some more severe than others.

The important thing to remember if you or someone you know is involved in a motor vehicle accident is that even a small amount of property damage can cause major misalignment’s in the neck and back.

Untreated whiplash injuries can lead to arthritis, disc and spine degeneration and symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, insomnia, and chronic back pain.

According to research, it’s best to see a chiropractor for whiplash injuries…and it’s best to be seen right away. If you wait, then scar tissue and inflammation may persist which can become irreversible.

A chiropractor trained in whiplash injuries can prescribe a course of treatment that will include chiropractic adjustments, massage, ice, exercises, and home care to reduce the likelihood of permanent damage. Whiplash is nothing to mess around with and should be addressed immediately to ensure a favorable treatment outcome.

To find out if you are a candidate for whiplash treatment in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation.
