How Long Do Chiropractic Adjustments Last?

How Long Do Chiropractic Adjustments Last?

How Long Do Chiropractic Adjustments Last?

We have been providing chiropractic care in San Francisco for over 24 years.

Some of the more common questions patients have when they visit a chiropractor for the first time are as follows:

1. How many adjustments do I need?

2. Are adjustments safe?

3. How long will the adjustments last and will I have to keep coming in forever?

Well, these are great questions. After-all, we all like to know what we are getting ourselves into, and nobody likes expensive surprises.

The good news is that chiropractic is not expensive and is covered by most health insurance plans. Chiropractic is also very safe and effective…which is why insurance plans cover it. What dictates how many adjustments a patient needs is the nature of the presenting complaints, whether or not the condition is new and acute or chronic (over 3 months), the patients overall health status, and any complications such as scoliosis or diabetes.

Insurance companies have guidelines based on the above and most doctors adhere to these even for cash patients. The chiropractic technique of your doctor is part of the equation also. Some techniques do more corrective type care which takes longer but is longer lasting. Some do relief care which is just treating the symptom and getting the patient out of pain. This is what most patients want.

How long your chiropractic adjustments last depends on all the above and your adherence to the treatment plan and home care recommendations like stretches and exercises. It also depends on your lifestyle, including your work load, your stress levels, your diet, how much you exercise, hobbies, etc.

Some patients go years without adjustments. Some want them a few times a month. Chiropractic is a tool you can use as needed to help you express your health potential. Once you get the hang of it you figure out what works best for you. You make the choice.

How Often Should You Get Adjusted?

san francisco chiropractorWe have been providing chiropractic in downtown San Francisco for over 23 years.

During this time we have performed over 250,000 chiropractic adjustments. So, I guess you could say we have some experience in this area. What we have leaned during this time is that chiropractic is a wonderful tool that can be used in a variety of ways to help people function at a higher level. Chiropractic is also gentle and very safe.

Sure, most of our new chiropractic patients come in with specific complaints such as back, neck or hand pain. Or even headaches, TMJ or knee pain. But what they end up discovering is that chiropractic adjustments make everything work better. It’s not uncommon for patients to tell their chiropractor that they sleep better, have more energy, think more clearly, recover from exercise quicker, can walk or run longer, lift more weight, and on and on.

In fact, most report relief from long standing ailments that they did not even think to mention to the chiropractor initially because they were so focused on the chief complaint that brought them in. As a chiropractor, this is one of the things that is so rewarding about what we do. All in all, our days are filled with positive feedback. Sure, we have difficult cases, and every once in a while we just can’t seem to help someone…but this is the exception and not the rule.

In the beginning we see patients more frequently…sometimes 2-3x per week for a few weeks. Then we increase the time in between visits as the patient improves until the patient reaches maximum benefit.  The total visits for a new patient depends on their age, the condition that brought them in, what they do for work, any underlying complications, and adherence to the treatment plan.  I would say this averages out to about 10-12 sessions as a national average.

After this, some patients decide to come in for routine maintenance once a month or whenever they feel the need. Some end up liking what chiropractic does for them so much they come in once a week. Some only come in when they are in crisis…and everything in between.  There is no set formula here. Everyone is different. Chiropractic is a tool and once you experience it you learn how to use it as part of your healthy lifestyle toolbox.

Your chiropractors philosophy and technique also plays into the “how many visits do I need?” equation. Sometime you have to try a few different chiropractors before you find what works best for you.  A personal referral from a good friend is probably the best way to start. This way you know going in what the doctors philosophy and treatment recommendations are like.

All in all, no matter what chiropractor you choose to see, chances are you will be satisfied, as chiropractic has a very high patient satisfaction rate. In fact, Consumer Reports ranks chiropractic #1 for back pain.

If you would like to find out more about chiropractic, there is plenty of information here on this blog. If you would like to make an appointment with one of our San Francisco Chiropractors call 415-392-2225.

How Much Sleep Do You Need?

Chiropractic Adjustments and Sleeping Better

Providing Chiropractic and Better Sleep in San Francisco for over 22 years.

Everyone knows what it feels like to not get enough sleep. Not only are you tired the next day you are irritable too. You are also more prone to illness and injury as your immune system is depressed and your decision making impaired. In fact, chronic sleep deprivation, and there are millions that suffer with this, can shorten your lifespan.

So how much sleep do you need? Well, it varies according to age. Here is an excerpt from an article on the great chiropractic website Chiro-Trust.org entitled Chiropractic and Sleep that gives a detailed overview of the sleep demands of the body by age:

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sleep is a “neurobiologic need.” Think of it like recharging a battery, except the battery is your brain! The optimum amount of sleep needed changes with age. Infants need nine to ten hours at night AND three or more hours of naps, while toddlers need the same nine hours at night but two to three hours/less daytime naps. School age children do best with nine to eleven hours and adults with seven to eight hours. When sleep-deprived (>1-2 hrs of less than normal sleep), daytime napping needs increase as well as the need for longer nighttime sleep. Without establishing a sleep cycle or when interrupting the normal circadian rhythm (cycle of sleep and wakefulness), long- term problems can arise. This can occur as a result of missing as little as one to two hours a night. Though many claim and even brag about only needing a few hours of sleep a night, it is reported that they are less able to perform well on complex mental tasks compared with those who get closer to seven hours of nighttime sleep. It has also been reported that a higher mortality rate is associated with getting less OR much more than seven hours of sleep per night.

So, there you go. Of course we are all different and have our individual sleep requirements that work best for us. When we are unable to meet these requirements things just do not work right. As described above, sleep is a “neurobiologic need”. There is no way around it…we need it to function properly.

The bad news is, millions suffer from sleeping disorders such as insomnia and other related sleep disorders that are often connected to stress, lifestyle, diet, and underlying conditions or disease processes. Some have suffered their entire lives and take medication daily, further complicating the issue.

The good news is, chiropractic adjustments, exercise, massage, plant based nutrition, meditation and acupuncture, are (all natural) lifestyle modifications (to name a few) that can be made to instantly improve sleep and quality of life.

Activities like Yoga actually act as exercise and meditation combined.

As a chiropractor in San Francisco I have personally helped thousands that have reported difficulty sleeping. Chiropractic adjustments can help you sleep better.

So, if you are having trouble sleeping, consider making a trip to a chiropractor. Chances are…you will be glad you did :-)

How often should you see a chiropractor?

Chiropractic-lifestyle-san-franciscoWe have been practicing our unique brand of chiropractic in San Francisco for over 20 years now. And many of the patients we met way back when are still coming in. Why would they do this…aren't they better yet?

Well…they do it because they like what chiropractic adjustments do for them. Just like people exercise and eat right because it keeps them feeling good and healthy, so do chiropractic adjustments…it's a Lifestyle Choice!

Sure, most of the patients we see for the first time come in with specific complaints such as neck pain, low back pain, headaches, or shoulder pain, but many continue on throughout their lives at different levels because they like what it does for them. Maybe they sleep better, have more energy, get sick less often, get less sore when they workout, jump higher and run faster, to name a few things we hear.

How often you should see a chiropractor just depends. If you live hard and fast…work a lot and play a lot you will probably need to see a chiropractor frequently…say a few times per month. It's always more in the beginning when you first see a chiropractor, because we have to work on a lifetime of physical, mental, and chemical stress that has built up inside you. Most chiropractors will recommend 10-20 visits right off the bat to stabilize your spine and rehabilitate it. Then after that you maintain it say once per month…some less, some more. It's really up to you.

Chiropractic is a tool. A tool you keep in your "Healthy Lifestyle Toolbox". We teach you how to use it…and you figure it out on your own too. The beauty of chiropractic adjustments is they are very efficient. We can work on your entire body in minutes.

At our San Francisco Chiropractic Center we serve primarily office workers and urbanites that have a limited amount of time to do anything. This is why we have very desirable open hours (9-6 M-F, 9-1 Sat), a walk-in policy, and no waiting (more than a few minutes anyway).

This means patients with chronic conditions, patients that just need a quick tune-up, or even patients involved in a whiplash or sports injury can get in and out in 30 minutes or less (usually).

This trend is catching on. Chiropractic offices around the country are becoming more consumer driven as chiropractic continues to grow and become a lifestyle choice for more and more people.

Bottom Line: Chiropractic is quick, effective, affordable, safe and gentle. It's a No Brainer.

San Francisco Chiropractor Review: Back Pain

Anthony EspirituThe Executive Express Chiropractic "Patient of the Week" is Anthony Espiritu. Anthony presented to our clinic with chronic low back pain due to degenerative disc disease. Anthony had tried other treatments including chiropractic, but could not find the relief he was looking for. Anthony expressed to us that he wanted to return to playing competitive basketball and was doing research on-line to find a chiropractor that could help him. He read about our comprehensive approach and decided to give us a try.

It has been a little over 2 weeks now that we have been treating Anthony. We have been using chiropractic adjustments to the lumbar spine, sacrum, and pelvis to align Anthony's low back. We also found subluxations in the upper back and neck. In addition, Anthony had old injuries to his shoulders and arms that have responded well to treatment. We have also  incorporated massage, traction, and custom exercises into Anthony's treatment plan.

Anthony played his first competitive basket ball game in a long time the other day and is excited about his future with les low back pain. Anthony also brought his girlfriend in to have her checked for subluxations.

Anthony appreciates our walk-in convenience, friendly staff, and competent doctors. Thank You Executive Express Chiropractic!

How Many Adjustments Do I Need For Neck Pain?

Neck pain doctors downtown sfWe have been providing neck pain treatment in San Francisco for over 20 years now. During this time we have learned much. The most important thing we have discovered is that everybody is different and needs to be treated as such.

For instance…you may have two 35 year old men present with neck pain from sitting at a desk too long…one of them gets better after a few chiropractic adjustments, the other takes 10. That's just the way it is.

Sure, we make treatment recommendations based on a patients age, exam findings, and cases we have treated that are similar, but still, as we get into the treatment each case responds differently.

Chronic neck pain…which is neck pain that has persisted for 90 or more days complicates things further. Now we are talking about pain that is deep rooted. The nervous system has been re-wired because of the chronic neck pain and other parts of the spine and body are compensating.

Typically, chronic neck pain can take several weeks to many months to fully resolve. Chronic neck pain is usually the result of repetitive stress or injuries that have not healed properly, such as a sports injury or whiplash. Headaches can develope as well as shoulder and arm pain…even low back pain as the body adapts to the neck pain and abnormal motion and function.

So…how many adjustments you need for your neck pain will vary on all the above.

The good news is that chiropractors deal with all these scenarios on a daily basis…it's what we do. And after 20 years we have seen a lot…enough to know what to do and what not do do. When it comes to neck pain it's best to get chiropractic adjustments right when you feel the pain. The last thing you want is for your neck pain to become chronic.

My recommendation…see a chiropractor ASAP after any kind of injury to the neck, such as a whiplash from an auto accident…or a sports injury…or if you sleep funny or work too hard. And get checked for misalignment's to your neck periodically…say once per month.

If you take care of your spine it will take care of you…and nobody needs a pain in the neck!

How many chiropractic adjustments do you need?

San Francisco Chiropractor Comments:

Chiropractor in san francisco There are hundreds of chiropractic techniques out there. Some claim to fix serious problems in a single visit. Some chiropractic techniques have treatment programs that take several years…and everything in between. It can be very confusing for the consumer…and that's an understatement.

I have personally benefited from long term corrective type care, and short term relief care. I have never tried the one visit method…somehow this does not seem possible…but there are patients that swear it has worked for them.

As a chiropractor in San Francisco…(it's been almost 20 years now) I have focused primarily on tailor made treatment programs based on individual needs. Sometimes this is very short term treatment…just a few visits…and sometimes it's longer term…a few months.

There is no cook book answer…everyone is different.  A patient that was involved in a car accident certainly needs more chiropractic adjustments than a patient that slept funny.

A patient with a herniated disc in the neck will require more adjustments than a patient with a sprain.

At Executive Express Chiropractic we consider your age, your over-all level of physical conditioning and health, whether or not there are multiple areas of involvement (eg: neck, mid back, low back), and if the problem is new or chronic.

Managing chiropractic treatment programs is an art. We also learn from our experience helping previous patients with similar conditions.

We also modify our treatment as a patient improves…or not. Yes, chiropractic has a fantastic success rate, as well as patient satisfaction rate…but some people do not respond. We have to decide when chiropractic is not working. We refer out at this point for a second opinion.

Anyway…how many visits you need depends on many factors…but in the end, it's up to you to decide how you wish to use chiropractic. It's not an all or none treatment. Typically, you will benefit from whatever you do…even if it's only one or two sessions.

Personally, I use chiropractic adjustments as a component of an over-all health program which includes exercise, plant based nutrition, plenty of rest, good ergonomics, and lots of water.

The more attention you put on these other components of health, the less you have to lean on chiropractic. But if need be….chiropractic can pull a heavy load for you…naturally!
