Neck Pain From Sleeping?

tempurpedic neck pillow

Are You Using a Cervical Pillow?

We have been providing neck pain treatment in San Francisco since 1992.

One of the more common complaints in a chiropractic office is a patient complaining of neck pain from sleeping. More often than not the symptoms are ongoing but this episode is worse than normal. Some patients experience neck and shoulder pain and others headaches as well.

What causes this and what can be done about it?

Well…believe it or not the fix for morning neck pain may be easier than you think.  The first questions your chiropractor will probably ask you (and we ask all of our new patients these two questions) are this:

1. Do you use a cervical pillow when you sleep?

2. Do you sleep on your stomach?

When you sleep on your stomach you need to have your head turned so you can breath…this means you are sleeping with the spine twisted. The spine is also flat when you sleep on your stomach. Twisted and flat is the the worst possible thing for your neck. And even worse…most stomach sleepers have been doing this their entire life.

A cervical pillow is designed and built to support the spine in it’s normal alignment when you are on your back or on your side. These are the only positions you should sleep in. The pillow we prefer is the Tempur-Pedic Neck Pillow, but there are many other excellent pillows out there.

In addition, You may also need a some chiropractic adjustments as well as some home exercises to help restore the curve in your neck that you have most likely lost from years of sleeping on your stomach. Your new pillow will help to restore your neck curve. You should start feeling better right away because chances are the problem has been eliminated, though there can be a break in period for some with the pillow. Stick with it.

Your chiropractor will also show you proper ergonomics techniques as well as stretches you can do at your desk at work to counteract the stresses of sitting for long periods. Poor ergonomics can be a contributing factor to neck pain and headaches.

So there you go. If you have neck pain from sleeping your first stop should be the chiropractor. And if you don’t have a cervical pillow please get one. The best thing to do is to go to a store that has a variety or to a chiropractor that sells them. You will need to be fitted to make sure you get the right size and foam density.

To schedule an appointment with one of our San Francisco Chiropractors please call 415-392-2225. We validate parking at the Embarcadero Center.

Sciatica From Sitting Long Periods

sciatica treatment SFWe have been providing treatment for sciatica in San Francisco for over 23 years now.

Most of the people we provide chiropractic services to in the SF Financial District spend the majority of their day sitting in front of a computer for long periods. This is very hard on the body…especially the low back.

Sciatica (pain that travels down the leg/s) occurs when there is pressure on the sciatic nerve or nerve roots. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and is formed by branches of nerves that exit from in between the bones in your low back.  Pressure on these nerves, which are very sensitive to pressure, can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg/s.

The primary cause of sciatica is a bulging or herniated disc in the lumbar spine (low back).  A herniated or bulging disc is a condition whereby the center (gelatinous) portion of the spinal disc pushes through the fibrous contain walls of the disc and irritates the spinal nerve roots or nerves.

A herniated disc can happen from a trauma such as a car accident, sports injury, or slip and fall. Or, more commonly, develop over time from abnormal wear and tear due to poor ergonomics or sleeping postures, stress, not enough rest, and life.

Obesity is a primary cause of back pain, sciatica and disc herniations  because it puts relentless stress of the joints of the spine, muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Sitting all day for years and years can take it’s toll too. Especially if you are overweight or do not live a healthy lifestyle.

There are things you can do to counteract the negative effects of sitting for long periods. Exercise is high on the list. Chiropractic adjustments are also. Frequent breaks can help, especially if you stretch and walk around in between sitting. Drinking lots of water and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables with have anti-inflammatory effects can help too.

We also recommend deep breathing techniques and Yoga as a way to counter the negative effects of mental stress and the physical effects of sitting.

Unfortunately, sitting for long periods has also been linked to heart attacks and strokes…even cancer.  The moral of the story is that we need to move around way more than was previously thought. Doing so will not only reduce the odds of developing sciatica…it will also be good for your heart and overall health and wellbeing.

Hip Pain: A Laser Therapy Patient Success Story

Clarise is our San Francisco Chiropractor “Patient of the Week”.  Clarise has been feeling right hip pain and tightness her whole life.
She had surgery to correct a congenital superior femur problem. Her
response post-surgery has been good, however she has developed bone
spurs on her right femur which irritates her right ITB, causing a lot of
pain in her hip when she goes out to ride her bike and walk her dogs.
We began treating Clarise with our Deep Tissue Laser Therapy, and after
5 treatments, she no longer noticed her hip pain! Last week she biked
45 minutes to the gym, then went and swam for an additional 20 minutes
with no pain! We are thrilled to have been able to assist Clarise to
getting back to biking pain-free again!

Plantar Fasciitis: A Patient Success Story

Heel Pain Treatment San FranciscoThis is the story of our “Patient of the Week”. Genny
reported with constant right heel pain
that has been persistent since November 2012.

Being an avid runner and
hiker, this pain began interfering with the activities to the point
where she had to stop completely.  After having an MRI done, which ruled
out a tear in her plantar fascia, she was diagnosed with Plantar
Fasciitis.

She had tried physical therapy, ultra sound, rolling on a
tennis ball, and rolling on a frozen water bottle and nothing has been
able to give her relief from her pain. She began using custom orthotics,
which used to help decrease the pain when she would run, but no longer
provide the support she needs.

After having her orthotics rebuilt, and
still having pain in her heel, she googled treatment for Plantar
Faciitis
and found us!  After doing a few tests, what we found out is
that Genny actually is suffering from something
called Fat Pad Syndrome.  FPS has a very similar case presentation to
Plantar Fasciitis, but the pain is localized to strictly the heel, and
the pain is not felt when squeezing the fat pad and then pushing on the
painful area.

We have been treating Genny with
our Class IV Deep Tissue Laser, as well as taping her fat pad for
additional support.  She reports feeling improvement in her condition,
and was even able to go on two hikes PAIN-FREE when on a trip to Sedona!
We are thrilled with Genny‘s improvement and can’t wait to see her back at 100%!

Many patients suffer for years with heel pain and foot pain secondary to Plantar Fasciitis. Just like Genny they try many treatments. Class IV Laser Therapy can often help when all else fails. To find out if you are a candidate for Deep Tissue Laser Therapy in San Francisco please call 415-392-2225. Ask for a complimentary consultation and laser demonstration.

Low Back Pain Treatment Review

Low Back Pain Treatment SFOur San Francisco Chiropractor “Patient of the Week” is Rasmus Lund.
This is a review of his experience as a low back pain patient at our chiropractic clinic.

Rasmus experienced a brand new episode of low back pain while riding his bike in Denmark. He thought he could walk it off, but he ended up having to take a cab home. He saw a chiropractor and the pain went away. Then he moved to the US and the back pain returned and began to get worse, prompting him to seek chiropractic treatment here since it worked so well before.

Rasmus found us because our chiropractic clinic is located at the Embarcadero Center in the Financial District where he works. After receiving chiropractic care, exercises and soft
tissue massage in our clinic, he is finally able to sit with no time
restrictions, and can walk longer distances without experiencing
any pain. Rasmus was very happy to achieve the same favorable results from chiropractic as he did in Denmark. Things are much better now.

Many of our patients work downtown in office buildings sitting in front of a computer by day, but then are very active at night and on the weekends. It’s very important to keep your spine in it’s proper alignment so that you are able to resist the forces of modern day living at optimal levels.

When the spine is out of alignment it can cause pressure on the spinal discs and nerves which can cause unstable bio-mechanical faults under the surface (vertebral subluxations) that are asymptomatic (you don’t know they are there) predisposing you to episodes of acute back or neck pain when you least expect it.  Regular chiropractic adjustments can help prevent these sorts of problems and can certainly help fix them quick if they happen.

Rib Pain Treatment: A Patient Review

Rib Pain Treatment San FranciscoOur
"Patient of the Week". Tyson reported to our clinic
with a sharp pain in his back which had been persisting for over a week.
He first noticed the pain while he was doing pull ups. His pain was
so intense, breathing, moving, and even sleeping bothered him. After
realizing the pain was not going away, his girlfriend (a regular patient
at EEC) recommended he come in to our clinic
for an evaluation to see if we could help him. Willing to try
anything, he listened to her.

After a thorough history and examination,
we found that Tyson had a rib that slipped out of place. Ouch! When
ribs slip out of alignment, they become very painful and can interfere
with almost every aspect of a persons daily activity (Tyson is a perfect
example of this). The longer this kind of condition goes without being
treated, the more the ligaments that hold the rib in place become
stretched. The more the ligaments become stretched, the less effective
they become at holding the rib in proper alignment.

After receiving a
few chiropractic treatments and a few deep tissue laser therapy
treatments, Tyson reports being 99% symptoms-free! He has been educated
that if something like this every happens again, he should come in to
get it treated IMMEDIATELY in order to keep the ligaments from
stretching out and letting the problem get worse.

Tyson's compliance
with his recommended treatment plan and home care instructions expedited
his healing process. As bad as rib pain feels, chiropractic can offer immediate relief in most cases. We are so happy you're feeling better, Tyson!

Low Back Pain and Sciatica Success Story

Low Back Pain and Sciatica San FranciscoOur San Francisco Chiropractor “Patient of the Week is Jeannine Neal. Jeanine was standing in her kitchen when she suddenly sneezed and
immediately felt excruciating sharp pain feeling in her low back and down her
legs Classic signs of a herniated disc).

She collapsed to the ground and was unable to move for quite
some time.  She went and got a 90 minute massage the next day, which she
thought helped, but when she went to get off the massage table she
suddenly couldn’t move again.  After another 30 minutes of massage to her low back and a
session of acupuncture, she was finally able to make it home that
evening.

After one more session of acupuncture, and only feeling slight
relief in pain, she decided to come to our chiropractor clinic at the Embarcadero Center to see if there was anything we
could do to help.

After just one chiropractic treatment, Jeanine
reported a dramatic decrease in her low back and leg pain.  After her second treatment
she reported being able to perform her regular daily activities again.
After 3 treatments, she was back to walking 3+ miles again!

Jeanine
has been very compliant with her recommended treatment plan, which
helped her to become pain-free and get back to enjoying life in less
than 3 weeks! Way to go Jeanine!

This story is similar to thousands of similar stories that happen around the world each day in chiropractic clinics. If you have been suffering with low back pain and sciatica or know someone that is, you may need a chiropractic adjustment.

Patient Success Story: Neck and Back Pain

Neck and Upper Back Pain Doctor in SFOur San Francisco Chiropractor Patient of the Week, Susanne reported to our office with neck and upper back pain and
stiffness that was making life miserable.

As most of our patients do, Susanne spends the majority of her day sitting in front of a computer. She thought she had a good ergonomic setup, so something like this wasn't
supposed to happen.

We explained to her that even with a sound ergonomic
setup, our bodies still endure a considerable amount of physical stress
throughout the day, especially if we are sitting for extended hours and
not getting regular movement in our spine.

After just one chiropractic
treatment, she felt a decrease in her neck and upper back pain.  We provided
her with some postural exercises for the cervical and thoracic spine, as well as some other home care instructions (how to sleep, lift, and stretch), which
helped her to notice a dramatic improvement in her condition.

Susanne
now comes in periodically for maintenance care just to keep her neck and back in proper alignment.  Life is much better now. Thanks for sharing Susanne :-)

Back, Neck and Arm Pain Treatment in San Francisco

Chiropractor San Francisco Financial DistrictOur "Patient of the Week" is Jennifer Rocco. We first met Jennifer almost 20 years ago. She had developed back, neck, and arm pain from long hours of repetitive movements at work. Jennifer works for a gaming company and is involved in testing new products and research and development. This requires intense sessions of sitting with lots of hand and arm movement and limited rest.

Jennifer soon discovered that regular chiropractic adjustments combined with regualr exercise and proper nutrition could keep her healthy and better able her to meet the physical demands of her job. She had witnessed co-workers succumb to the demands of the job and develop serious repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis and chronic back and neck pain. She did not want that to happen to her.

Well…here we are almost 20 years later and she is still going strong. Jennifer comes in 2-3 times per month depending on her workload and is in excellent health. Sure, sometimes she overdoes it like all of us from time to time but she seems to have struck that balance between work and her healthy lifestyle that enables her to live mostly "Pain Free". And we are proud to say that regular chiropractic care is the centerpiece of her healthy master plan.

Patients like Jennifer are the reason we do what we do. We like to refer to our little chiropractic clinic at the Embarcadero Center as a "Corporate Pit Stop". The corporate jungle and the fast pace associated with it is the race track.  And your body is the race car. And just like the cars in the Indy 500 have to pull over from time to time and get a super fast oil, tire and parts change…as well as fuel up…so do you…and that's what we do.

Our Financial District Chiropractic Clinic is open 9-6 Monday to Friday and does not require appointments. When you need a quick tune up you can just pull off the race track and right into our "pit stop". We have no waiting so we get to work right away so you can get back on the fast track.

We offer chiropractic adjustments that include a stretch  exercise and warm-up massage. We also have "deep tissue laser therapy" and spinal decompression. There are not very many musculoskeletal problems that we cannot handle. We mostly treat neck, back, and wrist pain, shoulder and arm pain, foot pain, whiplash, carpal tunnel syndrome, and herniated and bulging discs.

So come on down. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation and tour.

Chiropractor San Francisco Financial District

Chiropractor san francisco financial districtOur "Patient of the Week" review is from Doug Edwards. Douglas presented to our clinic about 6 years ago with upper back pain, low back pain, thumb and hand pain. His condition had developed gradually over the years from long hours of sitting and computer use. His symptoms were interfering with his golf game and had flared up when he was on vacation sailing, so he decided it was time to try something different, because the care he was receiving was not helping.

When we checked Douglas we found subluxations in the neck, upper back and low back. Vertebral subluxations are the term chiropractors use to describe a misalignment of a vertebrae that is causing nerve interference, loss of motion, muscle spasm, pain and dysfunction. We also found misalignment's in the hand and thumb.

We put Douglas on a chiropractic treatment program to address all these issues. The goal was to take him as close as possible to being pain free with normal function. Well, we were able to make big changes and Douglas has been coming in for maintenance care ever since. Sure, sometimes he has flair-ups and he even has new issues that pop-up from time to time, but his regular chiropractic regimen of 2 times per month along with his home exercises and healthy lifestyle keep him in excellent health most of the time.

Douglas is not alone. Most of the patients we treat at Executive Express Chiropractic are coming for ongoing maintenance care. Do they need to come forever? Well…if they want to receive the benefits of chiropractic care they have to see a chiropractor. If they want those benefits forever then YES!

Just like if you want the benefits of exercise or eating right you have to do it ongoing..it's a lifestyle choice…just like chiropractic!
