Can Pinched Nerves in the Neck cause Hand Pain?

San Francisco Hand Pain Doctor Comments:

Cervical nerves sf
We have been helping patients with neck, arm and hand pain for around 18 years at Executive Express Chiropractic (formerly Front Street Chiropractic) in downtown San Francisco.

Since we are located in the SF Financial District, most of the patients we treat sit at a desk all day in front of a computer. So symptoms like hand pain, and neck and shoulder pain are fairly common.

When someone comes to see us for hand pain, the tendency is for the patient to think the problem is in the hand. After-all, that's where the pain is. However…it's not always that simple. In fact, more often than not, we find the the underlying source of the hand pain to be nerve pressure in the neck.

Cervical nerve root
The nerves (cervical nerve roots) that exit from in between the bones in the neck travel down the arms and into the hands. Any kind of pressure on these nerve roots can cause pain in the hands, as well as weakness, numbness, tingling, burning, and night pain. In fact, these are the same symptoms a patient has when they have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).

This is why it's so important to be checked by a doctor that treats upper extremity disorders day in and day out. I can't tell you how many patients I have treated over the years that were misdiagnosed with CTS…when the problem was actually in the neck. Sometimes the pain actually travels from the neck and down the arm to the hands. The clinical name for cervical nerve root dysfunction is cervical radiculopathy.

Some of the underlying conditions that cause Pinched Nerves (nerve pressure) in the neck are:

Vertebral Subluxation
Cervical Disc Herniation
Cervical Disc Bulge
Cervical Stenosis
Degenerative Disc Disease
Facet Syndrome
Pinched Nerves from muscle spasms

My Take: When it comes to hand pain we always check the neck to the finger tips on both sides. Our goal is to remove nerve pressure anywhere along the nerve pathways. The treatment is very gentle and patients respond very quickly…how long depends on the nature and severity of the problem. The last thing you want is to lose the use of your hands or for the hand pain to become chronic.

Anyway, if you are suffering with hand pain and would like to find out if you are a candidate for care at Executive Express Chiropractic at the SF Embarcadero Center…call 415-392-2225 or request an appointment online.
